Just got back from BL. They had a new $3 and a new $5 2-sided floor standing waterfall displays. These were roughly 50/50 restock and "new" titles. Of course I was with my wife and kids so I didn't have a chance to write anything down... here's what I picked up:

$5
Weird Science - Flashback Edition
The Hunt for Red October/K-19 the Widowmaker - Double Feature 2 pack

$3
Hellcats of the Navy
Roxanne (FS - never was a WS version of this release AFAIK Unfortunately, there was - it's no longer in print)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II (restock)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III

Almost picked up a copy of 10 for $3 (-20%) but resisted again. My recollections of this one is it was *lots* of hype with little payoff. They also had a "double feature" of The Dirty Dozen: The Deadly Mission/The Fatal Mission - a pair of made-for-TV movies from the '80s. I only remember this because I'd never heard of them and wanted to look 'em up. After reading the reviews, I'll pass.

Weird Science is a lot of fun. Paxton makes it a hoot! "is that my grandparents?" It's one of my favorites from the 80s.

That's funny, I ordered that Love Boat S1V1 a few weeks ago. Only watched one but it was loads of fun. I also ordered S2, S4, S5 of Gomer to complete my collection a week or so ago. Paid about $13 for each of these so not too upset about missing them at BL.

I figured I'd hold off on Wild Wild West and get the series set sometime. I just ordered Wanted Dead or Alive, the western series with Steve McQueen that Mill Creek put out. I was getting the final 5 Bewitched seasons from Deep discount and that one just fit right in there to make it even on their BOGO deal. smile.gif

There was. It is one of the many dozens of titles that used to have a widescreen and fullscreen side that Sony re-released removing one of the sides (sometimes the widescreen side, like this one, and sometimes the fullscreen side) but keeping the same UPC so that it becomes difficult to find the original release online short of contacting sellers for specific confirmation (mostly third parties at this point).

^Thanks! I found that out shortly after posting that comment. I actually have a few of the titles they did as flippers before changing the product. I have *one* which is listed as FS/WS on the case but is only the FS side/pressing! I just don't understand why they'd discard the WS and keep the FS side. More importantly, I don't understand why they keep the same UPC when the product is different. I like the film and will probably keep it but it just won't be as good knowing there's a WS version out there...

I've always liked that film. I like the TV series as well and am somewhat disappointed that only a single season of that was released.

I never cared for that one or its Saturday night "partner", the land bound "twin", Fantasy Island. That S1V1 set has been on the shelf here for 4 weeks now which somewhat surprised me. I really expected it to be gone within a few days at most.

I was able to get 4 seasons of Gomer last year from BL (2@$6 and 2@$8) only having to pick up 1 for that same $13 price point. I had memories of the last few seasons not being all that good. I was somewhat surprised to discover they really do hold up well and are much better than I remembered.

Just be aware that this is another of those sets that put the disks in awkward cardboard sleeve/holders. However, it *does* contain the reunion movies.

I picked up that Wanted: Dead or Alive series when it came out. I'd seen it a bit as a kid and remembered liking it but It's better than I remember. It's also nice to have a *tight* 30 minute western to watch on occasion. Even with half-hour episodes it doesn't feel rushed very often.

I stopped my Bewitched collection with S5 simply because I never did like Dick Sergeant as Darrin. I may pick up those last 3 if they go on sale cheap enough for no other reason than being somewhat of a completist. I did, after all, pick up S4 of The Partridge Family which is worse than *any* of the Fake Darrin Bewitched seasons.

If you ever buy a Blu-ray player, there are some decent options for about $60 on Amazon, 'Roxanne' has been affordable on Blu-ray and looks quite good (think it is a title that can be found for about $6 on occasion). As you know, you don't need an HDTV in order to watch a Blu-ray. Just the player and movie.

By chance, is the movie that lists it as being WS/FS but was only FS once opened 'Mixed Nuts'? I've seen numerous reports of that happening to people so never took the chance on that one myself for that reason. I didn't know if that might be the movie or if there were others also (as is probably likely).

@ BOB.
Love Boat is so nostalgic, Fantasy Island too. Something about silly little problems getting hashed out in an hour, everything is happy at the end. I love that! biggrin.gif
I'd forgotten Weird Science was a TV show too. I missed that one somehow.
...I'm hoping Gomer's final seasons are better than I Dream of Jeannie, I've had a hard time making it through that final season. It's just not that good. the early seasons were far more fun.
Darn. I'll probably get a mess of scratched up Wild Wild West DVDs. I'm tired of that happening.
I didn't know Wanted was 30 minutes. Looking forward to that.
That's funny, I remember Bewitched more for the 2nd Darrin. We'd watch the show in the early early 70s and just love it. I get most nostalgic for those. In fact, I've had a slight problem getting through the York episodes. Just started 2nd Season and I've had those a looong time. Not that I don't like them, I just have a lot of other stuff. But I know if I was to the Sergeant ones I'd be speeding through them. There's something about Montgomery during that time too..you know what I mean... smiley_wink.gif
I'm only on season 1 of Partridge Family. frown.gif To me, none of those has matched the pilot episode. I really want to complete that one too. I have all that in my amazon wish list.

Oh, forgot about another BL related purchase. I picked up Vol 2 and 3 of Popeye for about $25 total from amazon. Finally getting that complete, with a great deal of relief. Been watching Vol 1 sparingly since that crazy BL thing some time ago where it was $3. Funny, Deepdiscount has Vol 3 for $48. And I just got Vol 2 and 3 for $25. Next, wanting to finish up Looney Tunes and Woody Woodpecker just to have all those in my collection. Was really hoping for some kind of sale on Looney Tunes. I know those were involved in that crazy BL thing but I didn't get any. frown.gif And Woody vol 2 was there as well.

Yes, it is. I was *very* disappointed to find it was FS only when I opened the package. But it's a good film and works fairly well in FS so I'm kind of OK with it. I just try not to examine shots/framing when I watch. The good part is, like Roxanne, it was a $3 BL purchase.

I'm glad someone likes them. The only thing in TLB I liked was Lauren Tewes (real cutie) and *will* admit to watching a few episodes just for her... The bad part is if that S1V1 set is *still* there in another week or so I'll probably get it anyway. It won't be the first, or last, "marginal" show I've purchased.

Me too. I just finished watching S3 and still have S4 & S5 of Gomer to watch and S5 of Jeannie. S3 of Gomer was better than I recall, we'll see about the last 2. I've been putting off S5 of Jeannie because of "the wedding". The main reason I picked up the season was a very low price (under $10), and the completist gene kicking in.

I've yet to watch the S2-4 DVDs. Even during the original run I felt it started to go downhill during S2. Even then I was enough of a TV whore to watch the entire run. biggrin.gif

OK... you stink... biggrin.gif I would probably have not seen those offers on Popeye had you not mentioned them. That's one of the 'toons I grew up on so it holds a very special place along side Looney Tunes, Droopy, Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, as well as The Little Rascals, The Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, The Lone Ranger, and Tarzan films. I'll have a hard time not ordering those 2 sets, especially since I've been rationing out those shorts from the first set (yep, $3 from BL).

Tewes is a damn good reason to pick that up. She's really hot in that first episode, alongside Susanne Sommers even... :p I'm looking forward to an episode with Barbie Benton in it. always had a "thing" for her and associated her with the show... although it won't be the same since I could only dream of seeing her nekked, now with the internet I've seen her many times. She matched my dreams!! :p

Aw yeah, the wedding. frown.gif That's one I'm stuck on... an episode that leads up to them deciding to do that. Not liking that at all. I probably didn't like that even in my younger days. I'm hoping for some good ones sprinkled in with the not so good on Jeannie S5. ...been milking Season 1 of Gomer for a while. Been fun. I know it switches to color in Season 2. That'll be cool. There's some favs I can't wait to see again, like Carter going off to visit his mother and Gomer appearing all over the place, in windows and stuff. Really LOVE that one. Also when they go to Japan and that little Japanese kid won't leave them alone. Good stuff!

You're right on that! Lovely lady. But her clothing style changes later in the show, those big belts and what not. :p that just takes me back! ..a real shame she died so young. She had that Twilight Zone look about her, and was on one of my fav TZ episodes too. She was absolutely perfect playing a witch.

I was pretty young when I originally saw it so I thought it was neat-o throughout. The nostalgia is still very strong luckily... Although Danny isn't nearly as super cool as I originally thought he was. Keith was actually much more cool. The stories about Cassidy are the stuff of Teen Idol legend. That show was "good" to him. smiley_wink.gif Lucky son of a... furious.gif

I'm right with you on all of that. Great stuff. I like the cartoons of Lone Ranger and Tarzan too (the Filmation ones). Droopy is still quite funny. And although I have the DVDs of all the T&J, I bought the bluray and VERY glad I did. They look spectacular! Oh, I also just picked up the later years of Our Gang, available on wbshop.com. People don't like them as much, I'm the same. But I DO like them pretty well. They are still a lot of fun. I'm hoping for a good set of the silent years. I keep hearing they are restoring those. Hoping they'll be done by the time I'm done with what I have. ...stooges, I just need that final set and I'm done with those. I have to say I'm not confident that new film is going to be worth seeing, looked terrible in the trailer.

I haven't seen those Popeye's lower than what they are now. ... smiley_wink.gif push...push.. I know it's hard to hold back. lately I've lost all will power...

I got Wanted Dead or Alive for my brother - the entire series for $10. It looks real good on the 60" HD set. You may want to avoid the colorized episodes included as a bonus - they are really hard to watch. I think it was DD deal a year or so ago.

I've not seen anything about a new film but will probably avoid it just like I've done all stooge related films since about 1965. So... I guess you don't want me to tell you there's a new 20 disk Stooges box set coming from Sony on March 27th. It's called The Three Stooges Ultimate Collection and is up for pre order at amazon (link on name). It has *all* the shorts along with the feature films "Rockin' in the Rockies" (1945), and "Have Rocket--Will Travel" (1958), neither of which have been on DVD before. It'll also have 28 solo shorts from Shemp Howard, Joe Besser, and Joe DeRita, plus a trio of vintage cartoons: "The Bon Bon Parade" (1935), "Merry Mutineers" (1936), and "A Hollywood Detour" (1942). I'm hoping the feature films will appear separately. I'd like to own them but don't want to double-dip for 'em.

It's nice to know those look good on HD sets. From what I read it sounds like many vintage programs don't look good on HD sets - I've never been able to determine if it's because of the LED displays or not-so-good A/D converters/upscaling. I've also tried several TV series on my computer at times most looked horrible. I tend to blame those on the PD codecs I use and would expect them to look better an a standard HD set but, again, comments I've read make me wonder.

Some are colorized? Oh my... I watched about 1 minute of The Shaggy Dog colorized some time ago and was beyond lame. I don't even know why Disney bothered including that. Anybody jaded enough to have a problem with b&w should probably avoid the original shaggy dog altogether. :/ But I'll probably check out Wanted in color for curiosity. Glad the B&W episodes look good. I just have a 42" plasma so they should be fine on it. I'm used to less than pristine Mill Creek releases. Just glad to have them. smile.gif

@BOB. Ahhhhh...Susan Dey. She was in a movie in the early 80s with Albert Finey. And you DO get a "look" at Susan Dey, if you know what I mean. smiley_wink.gif /perv mode

No way will I double dip on those! and they BETTER put that stuff out separately! furious.gif

Got back from Big Lots. Was just going to pick up DOOM Unrated and finally a widescreen one and finally not $5, but $3. Ended up with an interesting stack of $3 dvds, and 1 blu:
DOOM unrated. Get to see how bad it is. I'll probably like it.
The Cotton Club. I thought Redd Foxx was in this but it's Harlem Nights. Still, Diane Lane is here. Woo hoo! Keeping!
10. Said I wasn't... caved. frown.gif
Night at the Museum. Looked this up on amazon and nearly bought the bluray for a little more. then I realized I was nearly rebuying the sequel which isn't designated with a "2". Whew! I already have the sequel, thought it was okay, but I haven't seen this one. I felt I missed a lot of the jokes since I'd never seen this orignal.
SAW IV. Now I have up to V. V is the only one I have on Bluray. This series doesn't really need blu since it's so gritty looking anyway.
The Patriot. Blu. They had this for $8. That's half what amazon has it for. happy to upgrade my DVD.

BL also has Ghostbusters, District 9 and others on Blu for $8. Wally world has District 9 for $7.88.

Slight OT;
My wally world still has a stack of blus for $7.88 that I sorted through last week. Picked up a few more:
Heathers
Godzilla 1998
Open Season
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete. Only ever seen the one before this, Spirit something or other.
Ooh, last week I picked up:
Time Bandits. I understand this is a bad blu ray but I'm thinking it's at least better than a DVD. I have the Divimax DVD which looks great. Was really torn about whether I should keep or not so I just kept. 1080i seems better than low res DVD transfer at least. If they don't redo this I'll probably pick up a Region 2. frown.gif
Hancock
Hero
Blood: The Last Vampire. (some kind of asian vampire movie with school girls in short skirts and swords...what can I do? )
Curse of the Golden Flower
Can't remember what else I bought...

They also have
House of Flying Daggers (I need to pick this up too, to replace a DVD... gorgeous film!)
Air Force One (I've never seen this but I'm not sure I'd want to watch it over and over...)
Monster House. An okay film...didn't feel the need to update my dvd.
district 9

Also picked up the Echo Bridge 6 movie Children of the Corn sequels. Echo Bridge loves up completists. smile.gif I've never seen any of those. I hope they aren't too terrible. I should add that I spent a fair amount of time going through 2 different movie bins. That last one I was going around in a circle and moving everything out of the way, forging to the bottom like Mel Fisher used to when he thought a wrecked ship might be near... seriously, I was just about to leave and there was ONE of these. smile.gif

Here are more titles in the more recent batch ($3/each - some are restock):

All the Pretty Horses (Thinpak)
An American in Paris
Breakfast Club
Final Destination
Friday the 13th Part 2
Geronimo (Thinpak)
Hamlet 2
I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer
Monty Python - Not the Messiah (almost got this but reviews are not very good)
Other Guys, The
Sixteen Candles
Sleuth
Starship Troopers 3
That's Entertainment III
Urban Legends: Final Cut
Vacancy
Wrestler, The
Just remembered, II saw Messiah at mine as well. Hard not to pick that up, never seen it. But I'll hold off for a cheap blu. It's still about $15. And I have a stack of Python stuff I still need to get to, including that documentary that was done a few years back.

I wish they'd get the original Sleuth. I have no interest in a remake of that.. ...just noticed it's only $126 at amazon. rolleyes.giffrown.gif

It's possible that the more technical among the HTF membership might disagree..but to my eyes, I thought The Patriot was a really great looking Blu-ray.

I'm expecting to be blown away (not just my head, my whole body, haha!) by it. I need to pick up Master and Commander on blu too. I'm always disappointed that there wasn't some scenes on ship during this. M&C is a good double with Patriot for that reason, I think.

Master & Commander, if you've never seen me mention it before, James, is my absolute favorite soundtrack on either DVD or Blu.  And it is the sounds on-board the ship (little detail sounds like floorboards creaking) that really make me say that (NOT the big booms from the cannons during the fight sequences...although they will put your sub to work as well).  biggrin.gif

I'm a huge fan of sounds of the sea myself. I remember when I was having a problem with a barking dog next door I'd listen to the surf through my head phones. Not sure if actual ship sounds would have the same calming effect. biggrin.gif Btw, they moved away just months before I lost my beloved dog Goldie to cancer. They may actually be a loving God afterall... ...I have the DVD but think a upgrade would be awesome for sound upgrade alone...

Quickie review: DOOM.
My quick history, bought a PC just for Castle Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM. Loved them! Bought all the DOOM games and loved them. In fact, I like stuff about Doom 3 that many many player hated, included the often criticized limitation on the flashlight usable. I just wanted the game more dark is all. It was a very scary game and needed limitations to keep it dark. Perhaps they could have made that limitation more logical so folks would be okay with it. Now for the movie, it's aparent the filmakers have seen the movie version of Resident Evil and at least 2 of the Alien films. But I question whether they actually played a Doom game, particularly that 3rd one, more then a few moments to get some examples of how things should look. I don't want to give anything away, but several things about this film disappointed me. I'll just say it...tongues? WTF! Where is that in the game? Did I miss something? I played that 3rd one through twice (and a half). No telling how many times I played the first 2. I'm not authority on the games, however, so maybe I missed the throwing of @#$%!! tongues! I didn't like that, needless to say. I also felt it should be a solo affair with a single guy, like Rambo, taking care of business (The Rock would have been fine for that). The squad deal is some other game (or just Aliens/RE). Didn't quite do it for me as a Doom film. But as a straight sci-fi/horror it's just okay. Some parts of it I was combing fleas off one of the dogs and missed some stuff since I needed the lights on for that...somewhat dark movie, like the game. So they got THAT right. haha! For $3? I'm happy. The POV part was kind of neat but not super neato as I'd expected. There's a 14 min extra about the games that I quite liked. Sure, it was trying to sell the 3rd game, but I was okay with that. (that game reviewer chick looks better as a brunette than a blond, woo hoo!) it really is a great game with graphics that just knocked me out at the time and even ran well on my aging PC I had at the time. I plan of revisit, perhaps a 3rd playthrough. At any rate, good quality picture and sound on this DVD, no Bluray upgrade needed for a film of this quality.

Went by yesterday. Nothing new but I did pick up the last copy of Shaft (1972) for an Academy Award film watching challenge on another site. The new ad shows a new batch of $3 & $5 films coming Wednesday. I've also read reports of a new batch of TVonDVD titles. Here are the images from the upcoming ad:
271269

Looks like the typical scenario of some restock and some new titles.

The TVonDVD titles reported are:

Jersey Shore S2 and S3
Dynasty S4, S5V1, S5V2
Sabrina the Teenage Witch, ER, and West Wing but no mention of just which seasons other than "later".

If I see these or hear more I'll update. Prices of the TVonDVD sets were not mentioned but I'm thinking they'll be $10 like the last batch.

And that lone copy of The Love Boat S1V1 was still there. I still left it... smile.gif

That boat is gonna sink! Better get it! lol

I'm riding by mine today. I'll bet there is nothing new.

Quick Reviews:

Special Effects. The Larry "It's Alive!" Cohen film. It plays like a a "What if Brian De Palma directed an episode of Columbo". Really, not too bad...goes a bit long. And I wasn't bowled over by the cast. Fun story though for De Palma or Columbo fans. Just don't expect much. A good DVD transfer, very sharp.

10. I've never loved this... laughed a few times, loved watching Bo (woo wee!)...but ultimately left me depressed. frown.gif I'll have to wait until I'm upbeat to watch again. funny..I thought this was the film with Moore as the funny playboy with the playboy pad and everything... waited for that scene and it never happened. :p I figured out that might be Foul Play, a much better film if you ask me. I have it too and now crave it. Nothing special about the transfer on the DVD. Sure needs an upgrade for fans.

^Maybe you're thinking of Arthur with Moore and Liza Minnelli - Foul Play is a Chevy Chase/Goldie Hawn flick. And, yes, Arthur *is* a better film than 10, although I like Foul Play better than Arthur. Arthur kind of depresses me. I don't find it nearly as funny as it's supposed to be. That's also why I've left 10 on the racks. It, too, was somewhat depressing and not as funny as the ad campaign made it out to be, but it *was* responsible for a resurgence in sales of Ravel's Boléro. biggrin.gif

I had to look it up. It's Foul Play. funny scene with Dudley and my #1 favorite comedy actess (named my favorite dog after her, lol) Goldie Hawn.

I agree Arthur is far funnier than 10. I love that one. Still gotta upgrade my VHS to a disc of some sort. I think there's not a bluray in widescreen that includes that lacking sequel.

10 should probably stay on the racks for a long long time. There's even a scene with Bo's lovely behind and Dudley keeps blocking the view. Talk about maddening!! furious.gif
