I should look for the Maltese Falcon. It might class up my dvd shelf. I could put it in between Drowning Mona and What's The Worst That Could Happen?

Nothing to be afraid of. Just dress appropriatly and keep your wallet in your front pocket . BTW, I usually park in front of the donut shop at the other end of the strip mall and walk, in a round-about way, to BL.

Isn't "Dude, Where's My Car?" in there somewhere? I think Bogie might have been in that one, too!

Re: Big Lots Sale

I picked up two more HBO films at Big Lots today, "Winchell" and "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers." $3 apiece.

Re: Big Lots Sale

Good luck. I hope everybody gets a big huge stack of goodies!! I was very excited when I saw King Kong. I have the Peter Jackson version but the classic oldie I only have EP on a VHS. Can't wait to view it again but on DVD this time.

Btw, watched 2 of my purchases over the weekend:

Bowfinger, which I've seen about 3 times before, causes headaches because it's so funny! Not long ago a poster on another forum said Bowfinger was the last good live action movie Murphy and Martin made, way back in 1999. It was a coincidence that Big Lots had it just days after I read that. Anyway, it sounds about right. Murphy is particularly top notch playing the geeky brother of a big action movie star. The road crossing scene is one of the funniest things I've ever seen Murphy do. ...Oh heavenly God oh heavenly God...!!!

Stuart Little 3 was boring but mercifully short. Even at my age (40s) I can watch the first 2 films and find them heartwarming, nostalgic, etc. Fox is superb as the voice of Stuart in both of those. Plus all the effects are visually appealing and all the humor works. But this final sequel, making the series a trilogy, couldn't elevate itself above mediocrity in almost every respect ("almost every" the canoe scene with the fish is pretty good). Fox does his best with the material, but it's all just too weak. I actually liked the choice to go all animated, but it looks unfinished! When textures are used they make the scene look like a video game. There's not enough detail in the main characters, especially Stuart himself, to make it pleasant to look at. My guess is the budget here couldn't afford anything of quality and they were lucky to do what they did. Short version: the kiddies will like this you won't.My dog Scooter, who watches many movies including about 90% of Homeward Bound 2 heh heh, liked the cat and tiger but yawned when they left the screen.

Great film. I didn't buy it hoping there was a Special Edition out there somewhere. I nearly didn't get Kong because I know that has a tin box edition. But I figured I'd never buy that one and I crave the film a lot.

Re: Big Lots Sale

Some great Big Lot purchases (all $3):

Whoopi Goldberg: Back to Broadway. The 25th Anniversary. That's $22 below retail friends!! It's worth 3 times that at least just for the 1985 show she did. Very happy with this one! This is why I friggin love Big Lots!!

DC Cab. Haven't seen this in years. Can't wait!

The Sugarland Express. Early Spielberg, although not my fav...I do love Goldie Hawn enough that I named my "child" Goldie after her. :*)

Fort Apache, The Bronx. I've never seen this.

Taking these back:
Rumble Fish. It's the '98 edition. There's a better one from '05.
The Thunderbirds. That live action movie directed by Jonathan Frakes. I'd really like to see this!! But this DVD is in Full screen adn there's a widescreen all over the net for just a little more. I'll get it later.

I bought the Eternal Sunshine/LiT one. Nice deal! They're in widescreen too!

I didn't see Cinderella Man/Seabiscuit. I'll be in there today and look for that.

I bought some cool stuff on the 13th. DC Cab was terrific! Hadn't seen that in years. Made me want to see more old 80s stuff. I made a list of stuff I plan to buy.

Fort Apache, The Bronx was a little dated, with a who's who in stereotypes, but really good anyway. Like Hill Street Blues the movie.

Damn, that Whoopi Goldberg set was a freaking great deal! Glad I saw that.

I wish I'd picked up Space Jam when I saw it. I just watched Loony Tunes Back in Action last night (which I also got from BL) and it was better than expected.

The other day I bought 9 (NINE!) Pc games from them. The next day I returned 4 and the guy looked at me funny. Haven't you ever seen a loser dude? We like our movies and games. But these suck and I want my money back! They were unopened so he had to comply. To be honest, I ended up trading those 4 on 4 different ones. Loser! hahahahaa!!! Big Lots=Loser HQ. They need to put in benches and those scooters with the shopping basket and we'll hang around all day like the walmart people.

Interesting. I was in the local Big Lots today and didn't see any new DVD's.

Re: Big Lots Sale

Oh my! thank you thank you. I've been waiting for Brainstorm. I hope mine has it. I guess I'll have to go by there today.

Barry Lyndon and Executive Decision are also ones I'll buy if mine has them.

Can't thank you enough for posting Casey!

Re: Big Lots Sale

That's quite a $3 list, Casey.

With those kind of titles on it, I might finally be moved to grit my teeth and check out my local Big Lots and see what's going on in there.

It's just a discount department store...something like a smaller Wal-Mart...except the DVD's are all catalog titles.

Re: Big Lots Sale

I wouldn't say it's like Walmart. Big Lots mostly sells random stuff like overstocks and job lots.

Re: Big Lots Sale

Nothing.

I was sort of hoping they would have an extra table set up with a bunch of new titles.

I did almost buy Dudley Do Right, the Frazier live action cartoon. I remember it being kind of funny. And Rat, some European film that's supposed to be in the same category as Waking Ned Devine. But I put them back. If I can't have Brainstorm I'll friggin nothin at all!!

Not the one nearest me. It's more like a creepy thrift store. Not so clean, etc. But that was a while ago and I haven't been back since. I guess it's time to give it another try.

If you don't hear from me after a fashion...send in Sgt. Preston and his dog King.

Re: Big Lots Sale

Is Big Lots an American thing? Never heard of it.

Re: Big Lots Sale

How is it the newly remastered Brainstorm disc, (which came out a scant two months ago) ends up at Big Lots? That's got to be some sort of record. And I guess it explains why I couldn't find it anywhere else locally.

Not crazy about buying discs with the UPC slash through the case, but at three bucks each, I can live with it.

Re: Big Lots Sale

I think Big Lots is just a USA thing.

Some flicks just have a white sticker over the UPC and then that $3 UPC on the front. But most do have Freddy Kruger marks all over the back of the box.

I really wanted Brainstorm. I had an old friend pass away over the weekend, funeral-dreading that-is tomorrow. Brainstorm over the weekend would be just the ticket. I don't even have that on VHS.

That's just one of several- I'm surprised there are so many on YouTube.

Re: Big Lots Sale

The Big Lots stores in SoCal used to be called Pic N' Save up until several years ago. Pic N Save had been around since the 70's at least.

Perhaps I'm just lucky with our local store, then. It's big, bright and clean.

Re: Big Lots Sale

Our store here just opened in an old walmart shopping center. It's also nice for the time being.

Mom and dad live in a larger city and have several but they are all in the worst part of town. There was a violent robbery shortly before we went to there's. I left with a huge stack of PC games. I was thinking I might not make it to the car. Hahaha!

Re: Big Lots Sale

$3 purchases

Eating Raoul
A Man for All Seasons
Katsuhiro Otomo Presents: Memories
(this is $20 on amazon)

Also saw the John Cassavetes film Tempest which I love and already own.

Still no Brainstorm.

Still no Brainstorm.

Who needs Brainstorm when you got such a good deal on A Man for All Seasons?!?

Seriously...that's a great 'get', James! Scofield won the Oscar for that performance. Great movie! And to think what I paid for it when it was first released...

indeed, that's a great deals.. i wouldn't think twice for that..

Re: Big Lots Sale

You had to notice I put Eating Raoul at the top of the list.

I've actually never seen A Man for All Seasons but the case blurbs, cast and description had me snapping it up. Looks really good. I figured if I didn't like it I could give it to mom. Mom likes Eating Raoul as much as me though. Heh! Chances are she won't be getting this (or Eating Raoul!). I love stuff like The Lion in Winter, Romeo & Juliette, from around this same time period.

Then you will be easily pleased by A Man for All Seasons, James!

Especially @ $3!

Re: Big Lots Sale

I just played Herman's Hermit's "Henry the 8th I am" on my morning show. I mentioned I just bought the movie about him and was sure the song was a great primer for it since both are such classics.

EDIT: Watched A Man for All Seasons Sunday morning. Excellent! Reminded me of Joan of Arc. Very nicely done and acted. It would have been worth $3 even if the sound track had been left off the DVD. You could run it with some nice music going and it would be fun to watch because of the great locales. Shaw arriving and departing on those boats was very memorable. I think that may be the only time I've seen Shaw (seemingly) sober in a movie. An off-kilter thought I had while watching this is "how much drugs would it require for your mind to twist and mold this into Alice in Wonderland?" NOt many!!

But I don't mean to poke fun. The film is easy to relate even today. Scofield was superb. I feel sorry for the real man in history. Not many would get to the point he did. Personally, I'd give up so I could live. Not at the price of someone else life though...I do have some morals.
