That sucks.  If mine closed I'd never step foot in the thread again.  :(

My Big lots has added a bunch of NEW $5 titles.  The only one I can remember is Spiderwick 2-DVD set.  I didn't buy it since I'd rather do a BD if it's any good.  Anyway, worth checking out yours if you still want to drop $5 on a DVD.  Not too many of those I'll go with.
Yeah, my Big Lots had nothing but 5 buck movies and nearly none of the 3 buck ones - which pretty much is a deal breaker for me. While I dont mind dropping 3 on an impulse DVD that I dont really need and didn't really want, 5 is too much for most of the shit movies they have there. Ah well, it was good while it lasted.

Same here Tony.  Not many DVDs I'll throw a fiver down on.  There are a few but I won't hold my breath they will ever have those.

Did y'all ever think there would come a day when we'd be making comments like "there aren't many DVDs I'd spend $5 on?"  :)
Well, there aren't many Blu Rays I wouldn't throw $10 at!!  :p

Man, James, if I bought every $10 BD I ever saw, I'd have a  lot of unwatched discs in my collection.  I was tempted to say "junk in my collection," but one man's treasure...

There are a lot of BD titles available for $8 to $10 right now.  Do a filtered search at amazon and you'll see what I mean.

Picked up Knute Rockne All American and All the King's Men (1949) at the nearest Big Lots. That was all they had that I was interested in though. Maybe Tony is right that the ride is over.

I'll do that.  I did pick up the Searchers for $8 when it showed up as a suggestion when I was looking at The Good the Bad and The Ugly.  Amazon really has some great deals at around $13 too.  I got Labyrinth and Dark Crystal for $30 shipped.  Dark Crystal was gorgeous!  BD, and the cheap price, made the film a much better view.  haven't watched Labyrinth yet...but I already know it'll be amazing compared to my old DVD.

Btw, The Good, bad ugly was ugly for the most part.  Too much juddering on my LCD.  :(

And if you haven't been to a Wal-Mart lately, they've got a series of BDs for $8...and a new line of movie two-packs for $19.96.  Those two-packs have some really high-profile titles, too.  Rocky/Hoosiers,  Cast Away/Master & Commander, etc.  The nice thing is the two titles are just cellophaned together...not stuck in the same case (or, worse, on the same disc!).

The problem with the $8-10 Bluray catalog titles is that most of the catalog titles I want I already have on DVD. My upconverting DVD player does a good enough job that it's simply not worth doubledipping.

That's exactly how I feel.

I've seen those doubles and a few oldies for $10.  But nothing for $8 yet.  Cool...I'll be looking.

I like the upconverting of my player as well.  Most excellent.  Still...I'm all over BD replacements of those DVDs if they are favorites.  I just picked up the Planet of the Apes and Mel Brooks sets of BD and I just cannot wait to watch those!!

The ones I've seen have been in the same place in three different Wal-Marts in upstate NY.  They have extended end caps (which are curved on the end).  These $8 discs are on the sides generally on the bottom two rows below some recent BD/DVD releases.

Much like the old $5 DVD bin, there always seems to be people gathered around them.

Bingo.  All these catalog <$10 BDs that I already own on DVD (mostly purchased for MORE than $10) make me sad.  (But happy for other folks!)
Well, I found them!   Thank you for the heads up!

Near Dark
Monster Squad
Cuju

...are mine for $8 each.  I read several reviews of the first 2 since i have Near Dark 2-DVD and Monster Squad already.  Seems neither will win awards for BD transfers.  But still, they must be better than DVD.

Didn't bother with the review of Cujo.  Just glad I didn't buy it for the last umpteen years it's been on my DVD 2 Buy list.  :)  I remember watching that with mom and sis, major suspense!  It's been so long.  Can't wait!

I saw several others that interested me so little I didn't even retain their titles.  They did have THE RUNNING MAN for $10.  Very tempted.  But my DVD should do on that one.

Yep Aaron, it hurts to throw down more money.  I might reconsider 1 or both of the 2 I already have.  I love Near Dark.  But Monster Squad just wasn't as good as when I saw it on cable in the 80s.  Still...BD would be much better when I do actually get around to watching them both.

Went by Big Lots and...nothing.  :(  But I was thinking I won't abandon my bi-monthly visits.  Never know when a surprise will show up.  They had those cheap TV sets recently, including some Universal Classics.

I know - go figure! It's interesting that there's plenty of crap that I'd be willing to take a risk on at 3 bucks, but add another two on top of that and I go running scared. I mean, that's not even the price of a big mac!

(Of course my reasoning with the 3 dollar discs is that I could write a review on epinions that gets me a buck, and I can always sell it at the used record store for a buck - net loss, I'd only be down a dollar for a DVD. That's a price point I can live with.)

Another new display of $3 DVD's at my Big Lots (Paramount titles). Includes a bunch of anime.
Mine too.  I actually bought something!  It's been a while since I've watched any anime, but Coyote Ragtime Show looked too fun to pass up the complete collection for $3.  :)

4/$10 DVDs again.  The ad has 48 hours, Tomb Raider, Jackass the Movie.  Couldn't make out the rest.  Doesn't seem like I'd find 4 out of that lot that I'd want.  But never can tell what they might have.

I guess I"ll zip by there.  I'm hoping for more PC games since they haven't updated in a while.  Same old junk.
For the 4 for $10 I picked up:
Death Wish.  Finally replacing a VHS!
Best of Beakman's World
Bad News Bears go to Japan (I know, I know... :(  But it completes my collection)
Black Snake Moan

They had lots of chick flicks.  Wanted to get Flash Dance and An Officer and a Gentlemen.  BUt...too many flicks as it is to watch.
I had a pretty good haul yesterday.  I might have to stop by a few more Big Lots again.
  • Bad News Bears (Both Sequels), they also had the original, but I've had that for some time.
  • Days of Heaven (Original Paramount Release)
  • Death Wish
  • Clueless "Whatever Edition"
  • Donovan's Reef (John Ford)
  • It's All True (Orson Welles Documentary)
  • The Italian Job (1969)
  • The Ladies Man (Jerry Lewis)
  • An Officer and a Gentleman (SE)
  • Ordinary People (I love the 80s edition)
  • Ringu
  • Stepford Wives (Original Version)
  • An Inconvenient Truth

Total - $45 after tax

They also had a number of other titles that that I considered including 48 Hours, Several Elvis Movies, etc..., etc...

Black Snake Moan was wickedly funny!  Very glad I got it instead of my second choice, which was An Officer & a Gentlemen.

My BL had several different editions of some films.  1-DVD vs 2-DVD.  So it pays to look carefully.

Nice haul Eric!

Thanks!

I almost picked up "Black Snake Moan".....just to watch Christina Ricci run around in her panties again!!!
MMMMMMMMM!  Maybe I'll still go back and grab it.

It's actually a suprisingly great movie, and not just for the reasons you mentioned.

I enjoyed the movie, but probably not enough to watch the entire thing from beginning to end again.  Hence my desire to just rewatch certain bits!

I'd recommend Hustle And Flow (Craig Brewer's first movie) to anyone who liked Black Snake Moan.

There's an "I Love the '80s" edition of Ordinary People???

I thought the same thing when I picked it up.  Who greenlighted this?  It comes with a CD with 4 pop songs from the late 80s on top of it.

That is awesome!
