Big Lots Sale - Page 9

Mine had a ton of James Bonds for $3 each.  They are all the first release so I didn'tbother.  I'd rather get the 2-DVD versions.  Or even Blu Ray once I get a player.

Dollar Tree had Davey & Goliath Vol 1-4 for $1 each.  Haven't seen that since I was 10 or younger.  Looks like nostalgia overload and I ain't even religious.  :D  Glad to read it was created by the same folks that did Gumby.  Those are still fun...so I'm thinking D&G might be too.

The new Big Lots ad is pushing "Halloween Horror DVD's" for only $3 each.  Sale starts Sunday, Oct 11, but they may already be on display in the stores.  I'm checking mine on the way home tonight.

There's also a current coupon for 20% off everything in the store thru Saturday, Oct 10.  Buzz Club members can log in and print one at the Big Lots website.

McCloud. Season 1 & 2.  Well...what Universal wants us to THINK is Season 1 & 2.  But I bit...hacked up or not I want to see this show again.  Anyway, it was $8.  Last copy mine had.

McMillan & Wife.  Season 1.  $8.  Susan Saint James.  Um hum!  ...final copy they had.

So I got me some Mystery Movies here!  Definitely inspiring me to pick up some Columbo after I recover from Christmas.

Surface complete series.  $8.  Well, "complete"="all they made".  But I missed this one and it looks pretty good.  Only one..

Revelations.  $4.  A 6-part miniseries by the guy who did Omen.  Looks interesting.  Only one they had.

They had several Law & Order spinoffs.  Not my thing.  But they were $8.

I pick up the single copy they had of Cat People for $3, lastest DVD release of the 80s soft porn version heh heh heh!  No since in waiting for the Blu Ray on this film.  Upconvert will have to do.

Best of SNL Tv Funhouse.  $4.  They had a few others, plus commercial parodies (which I'd rather wait and see in the actual episodes when they get to them).

Lots of cool stuff!

Starts out really interesting then seemed to lose all contact with coherent.  The "end" was odd and certainly left room for a Movie or miniseries or renewal, but it never happened and I'm not sure I'm unhappy with that.  Nice little set for $8 though if just for the first half of the season.

Loved SURFACE which, of course, means it was canceled immediately.  It did end rather incoherently as the creators did not know whether or not they'd be coming back until after they'd already filmed the "finale". Bet NBC wishes they had a show that drew that large an audience these days (Surface generally drew 9-10 million viewers, which would be considered a hit show in today's marketplace).

I'll have to check my Big Lots.  I almost bought a used set I saw awhile back, and that was for $12.

Good deal.  I remember other folks on the net enjoying it and disappointed it got canned.  When the word "Spielbergian" is on the box it's kind of nice to get 10.5 hours of that for 8 bucks.  Hee!  If I see another I'll get back with you.  I can sure mail it to you for $8 plus shipping cost.  It's in anamorphic widescreen and 5.1.  That'll be nice!

Sight unseen, I think so too.  10.5 hours!

Looking forward to seeing how it sits with me.  I'm pretty forgiving.  Although I did get bored with Invasion.  I remember having about 3 episodes on tape that I needed to watch and just decided to abandon it. It started okay...

No Surface at my store, but saw most of the same titles that James did, plus Gimme a Break S1 and Charles in Charge S1, for $4 each.

They'd also got a couple new displays of Warner titles, so either Warner is now selling direct to Big Lots or those supposedly "destroyed" titles are still being distributed through the chain. Picked up quite a few classic titles, including some Val Lewton double features, $3 each.
I got several of those Lewton doubles as well.

I remembered seeing Charles in Charge.  But it was $8 and I didn't buy one.

Didn't see Gimme a Break.  Like Charles, I don't want just one season.  But at $4 I'd probably cave on both of those.

My Big Lots had a decent selection, mostly Warners titles. I picked up one New Line DVD, The Assassination of Richard Nixon. The others are The Ballad of Cable Hogue, Isle of the Dead/Bedlam, I Walked With a Zombie/The Body Snatcher, Knute Rockne All American, The Man With the Golden Arm, and The Red Badge of Courage. Nine films for $21, hard to beat that!

$2.33/title!  I'll say that's hard to beat!

The problem with Big Lots is that I'll stop in on impulse, and I don't always remember if I already have a particular title. The good news is that at $3 a pop, even if I pick up an occasional duplicate it just goes in my "future gift" pile.

In this case I had Knute Rockne and The Man With the Golden Arm on DVD-R (from Cinemax or whatever), and I have Cable Hogue on laserdisc. It will be nice to see the latter two in anamorphic widescreen.

As long as you keep the receipt, and don't open the disc, you can also return them. I've done that a couple of times.
I sympathize with the impulse buying problem.  I have bought 60+ dvds at five different Big Lots over the past month.  These bargains have been too good to resist.  Buying so many has resulted in several duplications.  The good news is that returns can be made at any Big Lots for up to a month after the purchase.  I have done that three times.
Big Lots must make more profit off the media shelves they sell than these DVDs- I've bought a few of them to hold what I've bought there!
Geez, I'm going by there today.  My Big Lots is right on the way to Walmart.  That's rather sneaky of those Big Lots folks.  I really hope they do make a lot of money off these stores.  I enjoy going in there even if I just spend 10 minutes at the DVD/PC game block.

I was slowing down on DVDs since buying Blu Ray.  But I tell you what, some things I don't need BD.  DVDs upconvert just fine.  And some things may not make it to DVD, like the 70s nostalia film with David Cassidy called SPIRIT OF '76.  I found that there last time.

I've returned a lot of stuff.  I used to buy a stack of games and movies, take them home and read the reviews.  Now I just make a list and buzz back up there if there is something worth the extra trip.
I just got some more good stuff.

Adam 12 - Season 1 - $8
3 Stooges - WB Double Feature w/ Gold Raiders - $3
Love Me Tender - Cinema Classics Collection - $3
Mad Max - $3
House on Haunted Hill - 1959 & 1999 versions - $3
The Man with Two Brains & My Blue Heaven double feature - $3
Shaft - 3 movie collection - $3
Easy Money - $3

....and several other choice selections that have slipped my brain at the moment

They had a bunch of the Val Lewton & WB Elvis discs for $3 each.
They also had a bunch of MGM classics including 12 Angry Men, Carrie, The Graduate, etc.... for $3 but I already have them and most of them in better editions.
For $3 each, I picked up:

Barry Lyndon
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Spirit of '76
The Witches of Eastwick
Bronco Billy (Clint Eastwood)

Hard to tell if there was anything "new" or if I just hadn't seen these before. Also saw the special edition of Punch Drunk Love, but even at $3 I couldn't overcome my distaste for Adam Sandler.
Saw Charles and Surface today both $8.
Also saw 2 Bond sets of 6 movies each for $26 each.
Looks like the old box sets that came out before the remastered sets from about 2 years ago, orange and blue boxes.

Punch Drunk Love is definitely not for everyone but it's the not usual Adam Sandler movie by any stretch. He actually turns in a very good performance rather than making silly noises or yelling like he does in so many other movies.
I really liked Punch Drunk Love.  The scene using Conway Twitty's Lonely Blue Boy is one I've never forgotten.  I don't even know if it was all that funny, just when the song came up I caught the connection and really laughed hard.  I bought a DVD of that for $3 and haven't seen the film for years.  I also picked up Eight Crazy Nights for $3.  Now, that there was a mistake.  I could have gotten a Starbucks instead.

I hope mine has these.  I was hoping for more Universal Classic TV sets.  Saw nothing new my last visit.  But I'll bet they are just waiting to make the shelves!

The adventure is on once again, almost like last time.

Back up there yesterday "to buy some disinfectant only".  Haha!

Nice haul:
Easy Money.
Butterflies are Free.

Those replace old tapes.  I paid $10 for Easy Money on VHS a long time ago only to find it was in LP mode.  My recorded off cable copy looked better so I put that recorded tape in that $10 cardboard box.  :(

Bordello of Blood/Demon Knight set.  They also had the single of Bordello for the same price of $3.  So look around for the better deal with this set.  They are both in widescreen.
The Serpent & the Rainbow.  Finally!  Been meaning to buy this for years.
White Noise.  Thought I'd finally give this a try.  I'm really forgiving.

Didn't buy:
The Nude Bomb.  I was wondering if that film is included in the full series set or another set of some sort dealing with Get Smart?  Researching...

Bean movie.
Bean sequel in full screen.

Forgot what else...

No Adam 12.  Still looking.

Picked up for $3 today:

Ninotchka
The Garbo Silents Collection
The Dish (sam neill)
Marked Woman (Bette Davis/Bogart)
The Letter (Davis)
The Desperado (Ford & Scott)
The Sea Chase/Blood Alley combo disc(Wayne)

a good day, very happy. heck Amazon is still trying to charge $35 for the Garbo Silents.

I know *that* feeling... :)

"The Nude Bomb" is *not* in the box set.  If you want it, this release is the only way.

Picked up Good Night and Good Luck. for $3 the other day.

Thanks. I wasn't sure.

I picked these up today from the $3 display:

The Garbo Silents
I Walked w/a Zombie/The Body Snatcher (Val Lewton)
Isle Of The Dead/Bedlam (Val Lewton)
Objective Burma (Errol Flynn)
Werewolf Of London/She-Wolf of London
Footlight Parade
Gold Diggers of 1933
Pompeii Pete in the 21st Century (The Wacky World of Tex Avery)

They had the 2-disc Easter Parade that I paid much more for when it came out.  I'll probably go back to pick up a few of the Cagney gangster movies next time.

It sucks that our local Big Lots closed.  The closest one is about 30 minutes away and not really near anything I would regularly stop at...looks like there are some good deals if you time it right.
So today  I went bannanas with the Hammer Horror at Big Lots: The Curse of Frankenstein & Taste the Blood of Dracula (which kind of sucked since I double dipped on Taste, in the 4 Film Favorites: Dracula set - but I figured that getting Curse for 3 bucks wasn't so bad), a copy of Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed and surprisingly, a copy of The Revenge of Frankenstein. Rounding things out, I picked up the Nude Bomb, Red Sonja (yes,  I know it sucks even on a "So Bad it's Good" level, but I've never seen it) and Cleopatra Jones (to compliment my 4 Film Favorirtes: Blaxploitation collection).

So all in all not a bad haul.

Haven't seen anymore Universal Classic TV shows like Adam 12.  Oh well...

Picked up some flicks:
The Mummy.  Lee/Cushing.  Glad to replace an old recorded off cable tape.
Wolfen.  Ditto.  Bye bye crappy tape!  Love this spooky film.  Doesn't need a bunch of flashy effects.  More unnerving than pretty much every horror film released these days.
Mutiny on the Bounty.  Laughton/Gable.  Glad to own this classic.
The Nightmare Room: "Scareful What you Wish For" and "Camp Nowhere".  I know I'm too old for it but I really enjoyed the few Goosebumps I saw.  I hope this is at least as fun.

Still haven't gotten a copy of The Nude Bomb.  I might wait and get it later.  I still don't have Get Smart the series.  The film would just sit in a box for years.
