Well, "Ave Maria" is literally "Hail Mary" (both the prayer and the exclamation), and since Christmas was her time in the spotlight, I can sort of see the connection.

I'm going to go with:

"Christmas in Kilarney" by the Barra MacNeils (the old Bing Crosby standard given a kick-ass celtic arrangement)
"Christmas in the Trenches" by John McCutcheon
"I Can Tell When Christmas Is Near" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
"Still the Night" (an alternate, more accurate translation of "Silent Night") by Jean Redpath
"Let's Have a Patrick Swayze Christmas" by Joel and the 'Bots from MST3K.
"Silver Bells" by The Roches

Re: The greatest Christmas song ever

The greatest Christmas song ever is probably one you loved as a kid.
Many years ago when I was working in radio and had to play holiday music nonstop, I made it my business to get as much variety as possible on the air.
I recall figuring out that there were only 13 traditional carols, but countless other Christmas songs.
Some of my faves:

White Christmas - Otis Redding
Run Rudolph Run - Keith Richards
The Wonderful Toy - Tom Paxton
Christmas Times A Comin' - Bill Monroe
Up On The Housetop - Gene Autry
Santa Claus Is Back In Town - Elvis Presley
Christmas In Prison - John Prine

Re: The greatest Christmas song ever

I'm really not one for Christmas music. The stuff generally makes me cringe.

However, I do love Aimee Mann's "Calling on Mary" from her Christmas CD... probably because it sounds more sad than joyous.

O Holy Night is my favorite. Though not a country fan, the version I heard one year and told my wife I really liked was from Martina Mcbride.

I also like Bob Seger's version of The Little Drummer Boy.

I've since decided that Christmas carols begin and end with Coventry Carol. If you're a Christian, it's extremely moving. If you're not, you can surely appreciate how beautiful it is. There's a lot of power and majesty in the old medieval carols like Coventry and Emmanuel.

Greg,

As a medievalist, you'll get no argument from me.

BTW, if you don't own it already, you might like A Medieval Christmas (Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata). It's accessible (I'm speaking musically), and a wonderfully varied collection.

Dave,

Nice choice. You've got to appreciate the languages and instruments that are used on some of their recordings. I used to perform in a few early music groups that used citterns and dulcimers, as well as the cornamuse and shawm. I sang, played a couple of recorders, and was the group's harpsichordist. IMO one of the best albums of the Mediaeval Baebes is Undrentide. Good stuff.
