Does the German DVD of HOMICIDAL have an English language soundtrack? The film has been shown letterboxed on TCM, so perhaps Sony will release it someday, possibily in a William Castle ICONS OF HORROR set.

Sorry, just saw this post - yes, the German DVD has an English language track.

Re: Films that need DVD Releases with their Original Aspect Ratio, anamorphic if need be!

Can I suggest that this topic be used to post screencaps from "open matte" transfers so we can determine whether they are open matte or a zoom job like that godawful Deadly Mantis dvd

I for one would like to see screencaps from

Abbott And Costello Meet The Mummy (universal)
Revenge Of The Creature (Universal)
Creature Walks Among Us (universal)
The Mole People (Universal)
Monolith Monsters (Universal)
Bad Seed (Warners)
Black Scorpion (Warners)
I Bury The Living (MGM)
It! The Terror From Beyond Space (MGM)
The Bat (Anchor Bay)

Can anyone help?

Re: Films that need DVD Releases with their Original Aspect Ratio, anamorphic if need be!

All of the Universals on the above list are true open matte jobs as I recall.

Does anyone know if the Warner release of Rafelson's The Postman Always Rings Twice is open matte or pan and scan?

Re: Films that need DVD Releases with their Original Aspect Ratio, anamorphic if need be!

While watching HOBSON'S CHOICE the other day for review purposes, I noticed that there is a fairly sizable amount of head room in the frame. Could this have been filmed so it could be matted to 1.66:1?

The trailer on the Criterion disc is widescreen and doesn't seem to suffer at all from the matting.

Re: Films that need DVD Releases with their Original Aspect Ratio, anamorphic if need be!

Odd that the trailer is widescreen but the film isn't. My notes say 1.66.

Thanks, Jack. That confirms my feeling that the full frame transfer, while stunning, should have been framed correctly and anamorphically enhanced.

Re: Films that need DVD Releases with their Original Aspect Ratio, anamorphic if need be!

There are a TON of poor Lionsgate movies released full-frame (or non 16x9 WS) via Artisan-- MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON and Walter Hill's EXTREME PREJUDICE and JOHNNY HANDSOME, which, shockingly enough, was just reissued this week... again full-frame! The laserdiscs of both Hill titles were in WS. Sigh.

Looks like July 7 Grumpy Old Men goes to blu ray having never received a widescreen dvd release. I'm sure the sequel will have the same fate.

On March 24, WHV is releasing a 16x9 version of Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird.

Re: Films that need DVD Releases with their Original Aspect Ratio, anamorphic if need be!

According to the late Sydney Pollack on the commentary of The Yakuza, he had filmed all of his movies wide up until Out of Africa. Absence of Malice needs to be formatted to the right aspect ratio if that's the case.

Re: Films that need DVD Releases with their Original Aspect Ratio, anamorphic if need be!

I don't know what ratio the DVD is in, but Absence of Malice the film is 1.85:1. As is Out of Africa.

It sounds like Pollack misremembered - as Bruce Beresford did on the R4 DVD of Puberty Blues when he said it was his first film in Scope. He had forgotten about Barry McKenzie Holds His Own.

Re: Films that need DVD Releases with their Original Aspect Ratio, anamorphic if need be!

I want to see every single swords and sandals movie (peplum in Europe) released on dvd using a decent 2.35:1 print starting with
HERCULES UNCHAINED!

Here, we have conclusive proof that ALL the H.G Lewis films were widescreen. See bottom of this link - http://cineschlocker.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=656&blogId=1

The DVD culture includes a lot of film purists. They're all interested in widescreen and that sort of thing. What were the original ratios of your films?

They were all 1.85:1. They always were.

Looking at the DVD screencaps (since Blood Feast and Two Thousand Maniacs are all I own), Blood Feast looks open matte, Something Werid is 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widesceeen, and the rest look like pan'scan to me, as there is no headroom at all. if this is true, what a waste

BEAU BRUMMELL (1954) aired on TCM recently in an open matte transfer.

THIS ISLAND EARTH needs a proper R1 release. It's strange that the R2 is 1.85 anamorphic, while the R1 is the usual pan and scan version that's been shown forever on TV. Apparently intended for a 2:1 ratio, I would settle for an NTSC version of the R2 transfer.

The Republic release of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956) is pan and scan, not the full open matte frame. (Supposedly this one was shot in the Academy Ratio, but I'm not sure about that, since we're talking 1956 here.)

KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS could also use a widescreen release. Fortunately, the Good Times version is a true open matte, and can easily be cropped to 1.85:1, although an anamorphic version would be better.

Of course there are probably dozens of non-anamorphic, letterboxed discs of horror/sci-fi films out there  - JOURNEY TO THE SEVENTH PLANET, GORGO, TOWER OF EVIL, KONGA, PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES, etc.

I think TIE was discussed before, and the current DVD is actually open matte, not pan and scan.

The US DVD of TIE is cropped a little on the sides compared to the widescreen UK DVD

INVASION: My understanding is that 1.85:1 is what the film was designed for, and it was shot open matte accordingly. If you cropped an Academy film to 2.35:1. you'd be looking at people's chests and little else!

KINGDOM: I did hear Code Red was supposed to release this. There is an anamorphic dutch DVD

Also, all these Mexican horrors on DVD from the late 50s onwards should be widescreen

Aztec Mummy (and sequels)
Black Pit of Dr. M
Curse of the Crying Woman

No, it's definitely pan and scan, because there are scenes on the DVD that won't matte to 2:1 or even 1.85:1. (It's likely these scenes were zoomed during telecine.) Believe me, I know this, because I matted the movie using the player on my computer.

ELEPHANT WALK aired tonight on TCM in open matte.

That is interesting. I wonder if the old Image DVD is the same transfer?

What's the view on French "art" films like Alphaville? open matte for wide, or genuine Academy ratio?

No good deed

Under Heavy fire (shot in 2:35.1)

After seeing a great print of it at a midnight show for the very first time a couple of months ago, I'd love to own a proper aspect ratio of Sorcerer (1977).

Arthur (1981).

I searched the thread and didn't see it yet mentioned.
