Alarm Clocks

I've been married for over 13 years and the entire time I've been with my wife, she has had the same alarm clock. (I have too.) Every morning the thing goes off and causes her to rapidly shut it off. She is a light sleeper. For Christmas I'd like to get her a new alarm clock that makes a more gentle noise. Instead of waking up to a fire alarm every morning, is there something different? Any suggestions are welcome!

We've just got an inexensive Sony alarm clock that you can either set to buzz, radio, or CD. So if you want you could wake up to a soothing CD of your choice. We just leave it set to radio at a reasonable volume.

We've had it quite a while so I'm sure these days you could get one that has an iPod dock instead of a CD player.

Way back in the 80's I used my stereo as an alarm. The cassette would start automatically. Once I had a friend make a tape and I didn't listen to it ahead of time. The next morning I awakened to "Get on up!! and dance to the music!!" by Sly and the Family Stone.
Now I just use my alarm on my watch. It is a nice not too loud beep beep that wakes me, but I don't feel like throwing it across the room. Not much of a gift idea though.

I've got a clock like that as well, it's a Philips. It has a "Gentle Wake" feature, which means you can set the alarm to start at no or low volume and continually increase to a max volume that you set. I hate "fire alarm" clocks, so I love this feature.

The vibrate on my cellphone is loud and strong enough to wake me. Is there a standalone alarm clock that has a vibrate-only mode ?

Yep. Ours is an RCA. They call it a gradual alarm, but it's the same thing. Much better than getting jolted out of bed every morning.

You could get her a rooster...

My wife and I both have inexpensive digital travel alarm clocks from Wal~Mart, but I don't remember the brand. I think I paid about $10 for each.

I don't use alram clock, I use my phone instead, if you think that alarm clock is not noisy enough, you can use both your clock and phone.

I like the rooster idea! I guess for now I'll settle with getting her an alarm clock with a CD player so that she can at least wake up to gentle music. I'm not sure if the "dawn simulator" would work for her but that is a cool concept and I thank Cameron for posting the links. During my search I found another that puts a vibrator under your mattress and it will buzz the bed in the morning. That's cool but again, I'm not too sure if she'd go with that. So a CD player it is with some songs that will start out slow and then jump to heavy metal, get your butt outta bed, hard rock.
