Culver City, Calif (November 3, 2008): Sony Pictures Home Entertainment streets the mad-funny, coming-of-age comedy The Wackness on high-definition Blu-ray Disc and DVD on January 6, 2009 for the SRP of $39.95 (Blu-ray) and $28.96 (DVD). Set on the gritty, graffiti-laden streets of New York City in 1994, this story centers around Luke Shapiro, a 17-year-old recent high school graduate who has befriended a misguided, pot-smoking therapist and has fallen in love with the therapist’s stepdaughter. With an antiquated ice-cart containing his weed-selling business, he wheels and deals around the sweltering city. In the process, he comes into contact with a colorful coterie of characters—from hippies to hip-hoppers, these playas coexist in the salad days of pre-Giuliani NY gentrification. The film won the Audience Award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and stars Academy Award®-winner Sir Ben Kingsley[1] (Gandhi, House of Sand and Fog), Josh Peck (“Drake & Josh”), Olivia Thirlby (Juno), Famke Janssen (X-Men, “Nip/Tuck”); and features Mary-Kate Olsen (“Weeds”) and Method Man (“The Wire”); and was written and directed by Jonathan Levine (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane). Bonus features on The Wackness include a commentary with director Levine and star Peck, as well as deleted scenes and more.

The Wackness synopsis
Luke Shapiro (Josh Drake) is a 17-year-old high school graduate spending his last summer in New York City before he goes off to college. He doesn’t rate very high on the cool kid richter-he’s a bit lost and a bit lonely. He spends his days “working,” which consists of selling weed from a rusty hand-wheeled ice cart, and in the process encounters a loyal customer in Dr. Squires (Sir Ben Kingsley), an unorthodox psychiatrist who offers his services to Luke in exchange for pot. As an added bonus, the good doctor also happens to be stepfather to the girl Luke likes. When the motley pair of doctor and patient aren’t tripping around the streets of New York-- doctor imparting pearls of ‘60s-inspired wisdom; Luke responding in early ‘90s slang --Luke is spending his time falling in love with lovely stepdaughter Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby). Amidst the insufferable summer sun, between the graffiti, drug pushers and prostitutes of Times Square, Luke’s life changes form. It builds up and breaks down as he slowly awakens to the man he is to become, and, ironically, in the process Dr. Squires does some growing up as well.
