I very much hoped that Warner would finally release "The Prize" and Peter Ustinov's "Lady L". I don't know if there are any copyright issues with these two movies, but "Lady L" should definitively be in the hands of Warner and both movies have been aired lots of times in the 1990 on TCM. They might not be the best of Newman's movies, but they certainly deserve to be released on DVD!

dear Warner home Vid.

Thank you for waiting an entire month to post some art for this series - so so art laid in white frames. the art for silver Chalice completely misses all of the spectacle of the film as did the art for Quo Vadis.

Do we wait another month for some real specs ?

Is Silver Chalice really the uncut 142 min version. Wil it be 4.0 sound or the usual 2.0 mixdown? Will we at leat get trailers for these films.

Warners, if you are listening, what about your other upcoming classics. Dow we get any extras for goodbye, Mr. Chips. Far form the Madding Crowd (what kind of sound for those two films) , any trailers for the Warner Romance Collection.
We have been your faithful customers - let us in on the secrets.

Barnes and Noble has a 2 disc DVD set called Paul Newman: Remembering the Legend up for pre-order for the 16/12/08.

It is being released by a company called TGG Direct and is around $7.99

due to my post last night, a friend tippped me to Amazon, which now shows not only the front cover, but the back cover for Silver Chalice.

The back cover shows NO EXTRAS, 5.1 sound. The film is not the announced uncut 142 min version, but the stnadard 135 min version of the film.

Sadly the back cover for The Outrage is wrong.

But I doubt that will have any extras.

Just reading some of the responses here, I am flabbergasted as to why The Prize, The Rack, Paris Blues and Until They Sail (far superior films) weren't released first.

I will purchase Rachel, Rachel and The Helen Morgan Story, but the other three come under 'camp classics'. I don't understand why they were not put in a boxset and sold a little cheaper.

P.S My wife thanks Warner Bros for the stunning artwork (pfft - women!!)

Lots of reasons. Maybe those films require more restoration or preservation work before they can be released for example.

The funny thing is, often popular films were printed so many times that they need more work to look good compared to less popular films which have well preserved elements already.

Whats with having no extras... not even a trailer. Warner always seems to include at least a trailer. That isn't like them.

I dunno Warner has been a little disappointing lately with their classic releases for 2009 so far.

Maybe it is a sign of the times. Extra features cost money, an easy way to lower costs is to get rid of them.

I just don't understand why they didn't include these films and Cool Hand Luke in a new boxed set.

I wonder if that was there initial intention but some of the titles were delayed.

I picked up a copy of "When Time Ran Out" early. It has a beautiful widescreen transfer and the movie is every bit as entertaining as I remember it, despite the bad special effects. There is no trailer. This flick doesn't need a phlethora of extras but couldn't they at least include the trailer? These type of bone-dry DVDs shouldn't cost any more than ten bucks. Oh well

Luisito34: While I don't find the film as entertaining as you do, I agree that a DVD without a trailer, at the least, shouldn't be more than $10. I mean, really! Since when are scene selections or English subtitles considered to be "special features"?

If you don't mind me asking Simon, which titles did you go for?

On another tangent, DVDPacific seems to be taking their sweet time sending my DVDs to me. I ordered the Errol Flynn westerns with Priority International(they were in stock at time) and they took over a month to get to Adelaide (I moved from Hobart three months ago). Normally they get in in just over a week.

The Silver Chalice, The Helen Morgan Story and The Outrage.

I have had exactly the same issue with slow shipments so far this year. I received the Michael Powell set last Wednesday that was shipped from the U.S. on 23rd of December! I was almost certain it was lost.

I contacted them and they assured me that they are sending things out using exactly the same postal method, so it must be strange happenings in the U.S. postal system, or in Australia post.

You might want to give DVDPlanet a try. They are priced low, ship promptly and their customer service is excellent. I've been having a good experience with them for the past several months.

So does DVDPlanet have free shipping. Although they don't encourage it, it's never failed yet. I started going to DVDPlanet because Deepdiscount is usually out of stock on everything except new releases and sales items, and their customer service is rude, disingenuous, and useless.

CineKarine - must warn you that mr. ericksons reviews are usually unreliable about picture and sound quality.

even in his rundown of the story he gets things wrong- has he seen the film?

Says that Paul Newmans character converts when he drinks fron the cup - not true, Paul Newman NEVER drinks from the cup. Says the Virginia May character is married to Jack Palance. She most certainly is NOT married to him.

Too bad Warners didn't include the original trailer.

Warners press release promised the original 142 minute version of the film. What we get here is the standard cut 135 minute version.
The trailer has some of the scenes that are now missing.

Yeah, he seemed to be impressed with the picture quality of Land of the Pharoahs, whcih I think is one of WHV's worst efforts.

Yeah, I restricted myself to three of them. I would've got more but the exchange rate is terrible. I would've probably bought into Blu-ray by now if the exchange rate was better.
