i just had time to sit down and zip through the movie on blu-ray. i'm surprised i haven't found any reviews of this blu-ray presentation on the internet.

i think there's some DNR involved in this even though there's truehd. can any1 confirm?

Yifeng:

I'd like to hear more about your thoughts of the Elf BD.

This is a title that gets enough play at my house to warrant an upgrade. Except for the ending, this is the only vehicle of his in which I think Will Ferrell finds just that right touch of whimsy for his great talent.

Are the features the same as the original SD release? And what are your thoughts of the PQ (outside of potential DNR) & SQ?

Re: No one reviewed Elf Blu-Ray?

I don't think the blu-ray looks as good as it could have. There appears to be some DNR, which is crazy considering the young age and condition of the film. Are companies like New Line just gonna slather on the DNR all the time or use some common sense? I think there is some improvement over the standard DVD, the colors look great, and the True HD sounds very good. If you really love the movie it's worth an upgrade.

mike^those are 2 screencaps fullrez from the BD.take a look urself =P. imho, it feels soft and lots of DNR as dan has said. i dunno why any1 would do that, but they did. truehd is great, most comedy's audio are always the highlight and this is no exception.

other than the PQ DNR issue, it shouuld have been a great pristine title. it's also 1.78 and not 1.85 like the spec/marketing says. minor difference, but just FYI. it does fill up the screen.

i have not checked out the extras yet, i'll try to get to it tonite =P. i'm mostly a movie-only person =P

Re: No one reviewed Elf Blu-Ray?

Thanks, YiFeng (and Dan).

I will probably bite on an upgrade when I see a good deal sometime. it is a favorite film for my household.

The audio's the thing for me right now anyway until I can upgrade my monitor someday. I'm watching on just a 26" HD CRT.

Re: No one reviewed Elf Blu-Ray?

Are you sure what you're seeing is DNR? Elf came out while I was working projection at a multiplex, and all three prints we had were very soft. Those screencaps look consistent with what I was projecting.

Re: No one reviewed Elf Blu-Ray?

maybe it's just the filters jon favreau used, but it looks like it.

i just checked all the extras. all of them are encoded in VC-1, but UPSCALED, NOT HD at all. some are 1080i/480i. it's about time extras were using somn other than MPEG-2s. the deleted scenes looks like HD... but maybe they're not. anyways, that's about it =P.

Blu-ray Review: Elf | High-Def Digest

It gets pretty good marks on the audio and video.

Re: No one reviewed Elf Blu-Ray?

thanks =D, but i often disagree with hi-def digest's reviews. imho, they are wrong so often like saying journey to center 3D had truehd, really got my hopes up. then not admitting to it.

ok, how about some other serious reviewers like our own forum? =P
