Re: Blu-Ray Article on ZD-Net

Can't we all just get along?

I purchased my first LD player in 1990, bought many discs and enjoyed it immensely. I could have cared less that it was a niche format - as long as the shiny platters continued to be produced, I was happy. They were VERY expensive, no doubt about that, so I had to be very budget conscience but still amassed quite a collection. Fast forward to 1998 when I purchased my first DVD player. I had high hopes that it would take off but had no idea if it really would - a leap of faith. The jump in PQ was amazing, the discs were cheap compared to LD, and I couldn't resist it. And this year, I jumped into BD. As with DVD, the prices are extremely reasonable compared to the old days of LD, and since there is backwards compatibility, I don't have to repurchase my library of DVDs. I have the same philosophy with BD as I did with LD and DVD - I don't care if it's niche -- just keep 'em coming!

I think the one comparison that is fair to assume is that some of the LD supporters thought DVD (in it's early stages) would fail, kind of like the DVD supporters (today) are thinking BD will fail.
