Help me find the right song!

Appealing to the collective musical knowledge of HTF. I'm looking for a song - not an album, not a set of CDs, just one song - that meets the following specs:
  • Female vocalist
  • Synth or piano based (more accurately, not mainly acoustic guitar)
  • Song topic is not romance/relationships
  • Not overly long (nothing over 6 minutes)

Sarah McClachlan, October Project, Nina Gordon, Enya are along the lines of what I'm looking for. Sarah is excluded, since I've already targeted a song of hers for this (mixed music collection for a friend).

What do you recommend?

How about "Stoned Soul Picnic" by Laura Nyro?

Hmm. Not a bad tune. Looking for something a bit more ethereal or mellower, though.

It's my first time hearing Nyro. Like her voice quite a bit.

Re: Help me find the right song!

Sounds like your looking for Tori Amos.

Try anything off of her first album "Little Earthquakes". It's almost entirely piano and I can't think of anything romantic on it. Her lyrics run the gamut from innocent to dark. Piano has always been the center point of her music, but over the years, she has integrated more and more percussion, bass, guitar, etc...

Michael,

I own everything by McClachlan, Nina Gordon (only post Veruca Salt), and Enya (as well as Clannad). I also own Songs by Tori Amos. Is there any way you can furnish some specifics regarding the actual music? In other words, the key the song is in, the meter, the rhythmic aspects, and/or the instrumentation (beyond what you've already written)? Thanks.

Unfortunately, my knowledge of music is far exceeded by yours. I can't name those things, but I can name some songs that are near or just about exactly what I'm looking for:
  • Tonight and the Rest of My Life by Nina Gordon
  • Only Time by Enya
  • Building a Mystery by Sarah McClachlan
  • Bury My Lovely by October Project

Dunno if that helps. I'm using Amazon and some other sources to explore Tori's oeuvre, but haven't found THE song yet.

You might try Kate Bush.

"Wherever the Road Goes" by Heather Small

Re: Help me find the right song!

Make Up by Psapp. Solo vocal w/piano. Sort of relationshipish, though.

Re: Help me find the right song!

A Fine Frenzy is getting increasing amount of play. Her song content tends to be about nature and bucolic sorts of things. Makes me think of Maxfield Parrish paintings.

You might check out "Come On, Come Out", "The Minnow and the Trout" or "Rangers"

Re: Help me find the right song!

How about Sinead O'Connors "Hold Back The Night" or "Scorn not his simplicity"?

Re: Help me find the right song!

Until reading the last few entries, I had narrowed it down to these songs:
  • To the Water by Maire Brennan (Enya's sister)
  • Bury My Lovely by October Project
  • Tears in Your Hand by Tori Amos
  • Only Time by Enya

I really like the Tori Amos song, but it violates the "no relationship" guideline I set for myself.

Off to investigate the Heather Small, AFF, and Sinead songs.

Re: Help me find the right song!

A Fine Frenzy's "Come On, Come Out" is the track. Thanks to all for the recommendations - I found a good deal of solid, great music as I listened and considered. I'll be checking out more Tori Amos and Laura Nyro as a result, as well as AFF.

Michael,

No problem. Maybe some of the others are on the right track in helping you locate your song. BTW, just an aside--I love Tonight and the Rest of My Life for many musical reasons. I first heard the tune years ago on an episode of Charmed and instantly fell in love with the harmonic progression and the vocals.

Yay! Based on what you described I had a feeling it would fit the bill. The big question now is - Do I get a prize?

Well, the most appropriate prize would be a copy of the CD. Hee. You let me know if you're interested.

Re: Help me find the right song!

I might actually have the same music as you. I'd be curious to see the final song list.

Michael,

Gaudete, Gaudete (The Boston Camerata) is a wonderful selection! I've performed that work many times, and I also own the recording (A Renaissance Christmas). Nice choice.

Thanks - the version from A Renaissance Christmas is the best I've heard. I was really glad to have found it, and I really like the juxtaposition of it with the driving rock sound of Elfman's The Little Things.
