Inside Film - Offset granted to $40m Dark Crystal sequel

Production begins shortly. The film has underwent more then 3 years of creature creations, as well as script reviews, the production is underway.

Quote:
The project is a reboot of the previously slated CGI sequel Power of the Dark Crystal, which was announced back in 2005, but is now being planned as a hybrid of CGI and live action.

The underlying story is still Henson's:

Roughly 400 years after "The Dark Crystal" a girl made of fire appears from the core of the planet in an attempt to save the dying sun by stealing a part of the crystal as an attempt to restart it.

Expected release date is now 12/31/09.

The title definately needs some work. It sounds like something made for TNT.

Re: Dark Crystal 2: Power of the Dark Crystal

Meh...I've given up on pointless sequels to capitalize on the nostalgic parts of our brain. Ever since the success of the Star Wars Trilogy, we have been bombarded with sequels from our youth be them on the silver screen or in the works.

Will I see this film? I dunno! I'll have to really research it to find out if it is worth my time. However after the death of Jim Henson, The muppets themselves went down hill magic wise and I have a a feeling that the magic for this new film will not be up to par as the original.

Well, for what it's worth, IMDB still lists Genndy Tartakovsky as the director; there's a vocal and not-small group that thinks he did pretty good things in animation. There's at least some talent involved, rather than just raw nostalgia exploitation.

Re: Dark Crystal 2: Power of the Dark Crystal

Last time I read about this, Brian Froud and Trevor Jones were on board. Hopefully, that is still the case.
Dark Crystal has developed a devoted cult following over the years, and has done pretty well on video. I've lost count of how many DVD releases there have been! The old double gatefold Laserdisc set is still one of my prize possessions.

So, when are they going to make Labyrinth 2: The Wrath of the Goblin King?

Froud is definitely involved, and the Henson family is involved. As long as those two things are true.. when the original was made, it was supposedly taken from a series of stories, so this isn't quite like creating something out of thin air. So, I have good hopes. It's at least not "The Graduate 2"
