Hey guys. So much has been said here already about the wonderful hospitality shown to the HTF at all the studios, but I wanted to take the time to send a little praise towards Ron Stimpson and his SVS presentation and speaker line-up.
Ron had two rooms set up for demonstrating his MTS-1 speakers and family of subwoofers. (One stereo room and one multi-channel music/movie room).
I have had one of Ron's subwoofers (the 2039 PC) for a while now. I literally think my serial number is under 100. Even though it is a first generation cylinder sub by SVS, it is still working strong. Having an SVS subwoofer as part of my system is important. I have director's previewing film music cues all the time and it is important to me that the sound in my home studio and home theater be nothing less than what they would expect to hear in a professional studio. The SVS Sub provides that low frequency impact and clarity in the bass that I desire.
I would also have to say that the new MTS-1 speaker system is absolutely top notch in performance...and at its price point, it is a steal. Maybe time for an upgrade....hmmmmm.
These speakers simply rock. The imaging is very precise. It is very apparent a lot of work went into this generation of speakers.
Ron also demonstrated the prototype of the new SVS Audyssey EQ. Simply wow!. As an entertainment and music professional, one of the challenges we have in creating a working space is the affect the room size and shape has on the perception of sound. No matter how great your speaker system is, the room is the silent component of any system. When we mix films (and when I mix music for films)...the goal is to achieve a level EQ curve across the low end of the sound spectrum. The room will have a lot to do with what this curve looks like and sounds like. It is common practice to have one's room "tuned" by an acoustician with a parametric EQ on the room and/or the sub channel to balance out places in the low frequencies where the room will amplify or dip the lower sound frequencies. This is a tedious process. And at the home theater level, it is usually not done.
The SVS Audyssey EQ is designed to EQ and tune your room for you, with very little work. You simply hook up a laptop computer via USB, and a microphone to the SVS Audyssey EQ. You then proceed to take sound measurements around the room by placing the mic in various "sweet spot" locations. The SVS Audyssey EQ will generate all of the tones sounding through your sub. It will then measure the room, generate an EQ curve for the room and proceed to create a profile that will EQ and balance out the problem frequencies for your specific room. And it is not just a parametric EQ. It is measuring and adjusting the frequency and the time it takes for those frequencies to hit that sweet spot.
In the end, when playing through an enabled SVS Audyssey EQ, the room truly comes alive. Your bass is clear and not muddy. The vocals are well supported and less thin. The whole sound field has a presence to it that can only be heard to believe. The level of improvement will vary depending on how good or bad the room shape and acoustic design was to begin with. And you can A / B the room in the middle of a song to see for yourself how much the SVS Audyssey EQ is improving the sound performance in your space.
I highly recommend for everyone to consider the SVS Audyssey EQ when it comes out very soon. If you pair that with the MTS-1 speaker system, you will truly have a world class speaker system for a price that is ridiculous for the performance you will get.
Check it out.
