SV Sound and their speakers.

Hey guys. So much has been said here already about the wonderful hospitality shown to the HTF at all the studios, but I wanted to take the time to send a little praise towards Ron Stimpson and his SVS presentation and speaker line-up.

Ron had two rooms set up for demonstrating his MTS-1 speakers and family of subwoofers. (One stereo room and one multi-channel music/movie room).

I have had one of Ron's subwoofers (the 2039 PC) for a while now. I literally think my serial number is under 100. Even though it is a first generation cylinder sub by SVS, it is still working strong. Having an SVS subwoofer as part of my system is important. I have director's previewing film music cues all the time and it is important to me that the sound in my home studio and home theater be nothing less than what they would expect to hear in a professional studio. The SVS Sub provides that low frequency impact and clarity in the bass that I desire.

I would also have to say that the new MTS-1 speaker system is absolutely top notch in performance...and at its price point, it is a steal. Maybe time for an upgrade....hmmmmm.

These speakers simply rock. The imaging is very precise. It is very apparent a lot of work went into this generation of speakers.

Ron also demonstrated the prototype of the new SVS Audyssey EQ. Simply wow!. As an entertainment and music professional, one of the challenges we have in creating a working space is the affect the room size and shape has on the perception of sound. No matter how great your speaker system is, the room is the silent component of any system. When we mix films (and when I mix music for films)...the goal is to achieve a level EQ curve across the low end of the sound spectrum. The room will have a lot to do with what this curve looks like and sounds like. It is common practice to have one's room "tuned" by an acoustician with a parametric EQ on the room and/or the sub channel to balance out places in the low frequencies where the room will amplify or dip the lower sound frequencies. This is a tedious process. And at the home theater level, it is usually not done.

The SVS Audyssey EQ is designed to EQ and tune your room for you, with very little work. You simply hook up a laptop computer via USB, and a microphone to the SVS Audyssey EQ. You then proceed to take sound measurements around the room by placing the mic in various "sweet spot" locations. The SVS Audyssey EQ will generate all of the tones sounding through your sub. It will then measure the room, generate an EQ curve for the room and proceed to create a profile that will EQ and balance out the problem frequencies for your specific room. And it is not just a parametric EQ. It is measuring and adjusting the frequency and the time it takes for those frequencies to hit that sweet spot.

In the end, when playing through an enabled SVS Audyssey EQ, the room truly comes alive. Your bass is clear and not muddy. The vocals are well supported and less thin. The whole sound field has a presence to it that can only be heard to believe. The level of improvement will vary depending on how good or bad the room shape and acoustic design was to begin with. And you can A / B the room in the middle of a song to see for yourself how much the SVS Audyssey EQ is improving the sound performance in your space.

I highly recommend for everyone to consider the SVS Audyssey EQ when it comes out very soon. If you pair that with the MTS-1 speaker system, you will truly have a world class speaker system for a price that is ridiculous for the performance you will get.

Check it out.

Re: SV Sound and their speakers.

I was very intrigued by the Audyssey EQ. Having gone the DIY route with the Behringer Feedback Destroyer for parametric equalization of my sub (an SVS of course), the apparent simplicity and accessibility of the SVS EQ is definitely something worth considering. I was somewhat surprised more of us in the room hadn't done the parametric equalization, but having gone through it I'm not entirely surprised. Doing it wasn't hard per se, but it was time consuming and the Audyssey approach definitely seemed like a better, faster, and more accessible approach.

Re: SV Sound and their speakers.

I'll echo what Brian said. But I'll also say their full range MTS-01 system really did produce an incredible field of music. Even coupled with a modest Denon receiver (2308? 2808?) those speakers filled up the large sized projection room to louder than reference level with no hint of distortion or that they were even laboring. I was impressed with the musicality of the speakers. Whoever bought those samples at discount and took them home is one lucky sonofagun.

Re: SV Sound and their speakers.

We've been spoiled by having SVS at each of the last few shows, but Ron and co. blew our minds once again! This time they had TWO seperate rooms full of their products, showed us how to make our rooms sound better by using their new tech, PLUS they brought some great beer! =) My existing sub (which I bought before ever hearing an SVS) is still kicking but I know when I finally do upgrade that beast there will be an SVS in its place!

PS thanks also to Panasonic for the loaner of the AE-2000, I thought it looked great on Iron Man for sure!

Re: SV Sound and their speakers.

Out of all the places I regret the most not being able to see and hear was what Ron set up in the demo room for us. At the time I went by he was still tweaking it. I was also hoping that they would have their new power amp that they are going to be introducing. Ron told me it would rated at 275 wpc x 7. This I had to see but it was still in transit at the time.

I still look forward to a day when I can see a great room set up with all the SV equipment and a great projector just to watch a film.

As usual I am not surprised to hear that SV blew everyone out of the room with their equipment. Ron's dedication to his craft is second to none.

Brian:

Thanks for the great feedback from a professional's point of view. Maybe you can let other producers and directors know about SV and they too can have one in their own studios.

Re: SV Sound and their speakers.

SVS is incredible. Both their products and their creative/sales team are of the highest quality. You all really put together a compelling set of demo rooms for us to experience, and explore.

Thank you so much for your support!

ps. I've got a feeling that my wallet might be ~$800 lighter when the SVS Audyssey EQ streets.

Re: SV Sound and their speakers.

As a matter of fact, the two SVS PB-13 Ultra subwoofers impressed me so much that they are now sitting in my home theater

My only problem now is how to stop the pictures from falling off the wall in my office which adjoins the HT.....

Re: SV Sound and their speakers.

I agree with everything that Brian has said. Ron S. & Company did a tremendous job at the meet.

On a personal note, I am (was) the owner of the Original SVS product (SVS16-46PC) and I do mean the original one. The Serial Number is 00001. Over the years it served me well and when I replaced it with a PC Ultra it went over to my son's house. It still sounds better than over 90% of the stuff out there. And the Ultra? Let's just say that coupled with Audyssey Pro on my new Denon AVP-A1HDci pre/pro and a host of other goodies...

WOW!

Re: SV Sound and their speakers.

I regret that I wasn't able to hear the Audyssey demo. Is anything posted on the SVS site about it? And did Ron reveal the price?

Re: SV Sound and their speakers.

I don't think there's anything on SVS about it yet. They will be showing the final product at CES and it will likely be available shortly after. The price point will be $700-$800.
