The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 10-28-2008

Thanks as always Mike & Patrick.

This week:
Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) for me.
Kitt Kittredge: An American Girl and Tinker Bells for the girls.

I'm debating rental vs. purchase on them though.

Mike, you might want to take a look at this week's OAR / MAR disclaimer.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 10-28-2008

After the past couple of weeks, this turns out to be a nice breather for me. The only title that I'll probably search for is Baraka on Blu.....after all the fantastic reviews I've read for this one, I'm going to have to upgrade and ditch my DVD copy.

Thanks guys.....

Re: Weekly RoundUp 10-28-2008

Hey Mike...isn't Last Time I Saw Paris being released in BD this week? Both Amazon and High Def Digest have it as coming 10/28. Kind of a big release, IF it's still on tap. Really good movie, too.

Take it from me, someone who was forced to watch this last night by my "friends", the only option that's right is to not get it at all!

Re: Weekly RoundUp 10-28-2008

FWIW, the "Amazon Exclusive" book with the Abbott & Costello set is exclusive in that it's only available with this set. The book is also mentioned as being included in the dvdempire, best buy and circuit city listings for the set.

The Best Buy ad for my area has some errors this week. In the ad, all the Blu-rays that are on sale (Halloween, Hostel Part II, Cloverfield, etc.) are $10 more than what the Round Up lists but I went to the store this morning and all the prices match the Round Up and not their ad. All that being said, I have no idea if there's a similar error in the ad for Elf.

Thanks for the prices, guys!

Re: Weekly RoundUp 10-28-2008

Anyone have any information about Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D? I saw on amazon that the dvd supposedly comes with 4 pairs of 3D glasses. Are these going to be the cheap cardboard kind with each lens a different color? Does anyone have any info? For some reason I was under the impression you could watch this with a new kind of "clear lens" 3d glasses.... I'm confused!

Re: Weekly RoundUp 10-28-2008

Valerie, my copy has four pair of cardboard glasses. One lens is red, one lens is green. I wouldn't get all twisted up over it; the 3-D on my 46 inch HDTV was less than stellar. I'd personally stick to the 2-D widescreen presentation on the other side of the disc.

On some of my new release lists were: The Last Time I Saw Paris, Beat the Devil, Jack & the Beanstalk, and The Terror--all on blu-ray. Amazon lists these releases at $7.95 for Tuesday, October 28. But I don't see them anywhere else. And, the studio of origin is suspect...leading me to believe these are going to turn out to be public domain crap. I would love to be proven otherwise. So, I didn't list them since the info seems sketchy.

I completely missed Elf in the BB flyer. It is, indeed, shown at $24.99...which is $5 more than what bb.com lists. Some people have luck getting BB B&Ms to price match their own website. Others don't. Tinker Bell BD is also listed at $26.99 in the flyer and $1 less on-line.

Larry: Personally, I think that information is worth a lot! The amazon page sure makes it seem that they're the only ones from whom you can get the book. Thanks for straightening that out!

Thanks for the info!

That's what I get for not doing my research. I thought someone would have made a bigger deal over a Liz Taylor movie on BD... Thanks Mike!

When the time is right, Jason, I'll have a photo like this at the ready:

I never thought Liz Taylor was that attractive, but what do I know.

Hey, did anyone ever figure out whether The Final Countdown comes out this week or next?

I didn't know that was a question.

It seems to be on all retailers' lists for this week.

Baraka on BD for me this week! Surprised that the SD version is $3 more at Best Buy....as if I was going to buy anything BUT the Blu-ray!

Any reviews on the Dead Space movie? It's a tie-in to the video game, which is garnering some great reviews. I assume it is animated???

Re: Weekly RoundUp 10-28-2008

The Baraka blu-ray is definitely not $21.99 at Best Buy. It's $29.99.

Edit: I see that the Best Buy website is listing it at $21.99, but it's stickered and rings up as $29.99 in the store. They won't honor their website price, but if you buy it on the website, and choose "store pickup", you could bypass the register monkeys charging full price.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 10-28-2008

Lyle,
I did just that yesterday, ordering on-line and picking up Baraka BRD in person at the $21.99 price. What gives with that? I went back to the Sunday paper and didn't see Baraka mentioned in their advertisement.

By the way, the NYSE has told Circuit City to shape up or ship out.

Well, that's certainly not a shock to any regular reader of the RoundUp. We've been grousing about CC for years.

Quote:
Circuit City shares have fallen as its results have weakened amid a deteriorating retail environment and heightened competition from rival Best Buy Co. and others. Since the beginning of the year, shares have lost most of their value, down 93 percent.

Closing dozens of stores would allow the retailer to liquidate $350 million in inventory that could be used to pay real estate costs, including leases on abandoned sites.

They would also need to change the customer service model and stocking practices at their remaining stores if they were serious about still trying to keep the enterprise afloat.

I, frankly, hadn't realized things had gotten so bad for them. I wouldn't mind having one less retailer to research for the RoundUp each week, but I fear that lessened competition might mean higher prices at BB and elsewhere.

And as I have already started to research next week's RoundUp, I find the Blu-ray of The Final Countdown to also be listed for next week at amazon! Crazy!

I think that Best Buy and Target have stopped even trying to match them for a while now. That being said, CC will have a big title for $14 while the other stores have the same disc for $16 or $17.

And THAT is ALL they have become good for--an ultra-low price on a title SO big that they HAVE to carry a huge number of them in-store. Anything else...even secondary titles listed in their flyer are usually no shows on Tuesday. A shame, really.

And many BB managers know that if someone tries to price-match an item from the CC flyer, they've GOT to call to see if CC even has the item in stock...because they usually DON'T!

Re: Weekly RoundUp 10-28-2008

I would MUCH rather buy electronics from CC than from BB. In my experience the salesfolk at CC are relatively honest, while the BB crew should be called the BS crew.

I hope the company pulls through.
