Games you miss

Looking at the new Good Old Games website, I got to thinking about games I'd enjoy playing again. Though I've found I'm not really one to replay older games, I'd really like to see two simple puzzlers available through XBox Live:

* Wetrix
* Tetrisphere

They were great, quick fun on the N64, with jammin' electronic soundtracks and all around quirky personalities.

I also missed Deus Ex and System Shock, in that I never played them. A friend recently gave me Deus Ex, but it won't run on my modern computer -- curse you computer progress! Hopefully they'll show up at GOG and I can finally try them out.

Re: Games you miss

If you want N64 games then your best bet is the Wii Virtual Console. If MS gets anything on XBLA from the N64 it's because it was developed by Rare and didn't have Donkey Kong in it.

Personally, I'd love to see Shadowgate (NES) show up somewhere. It still is probably my favorite game of all time, even though I can complete it from beginning to end in like 45 minutes and there's no challenge whatsoever. There was an N64 Shadowgate (Trials of the Four Towers) that was really hard and not too great, but bad sales meant that the second N64 game was cancelled.

I'm 360 only, and they're not out for the Wii yet, anyway. (Though if I really wanted, I could pull my N64 out of storage. But wife & video-game clutter don't mix ) Wetrix was cross platform in the day; it would be cool to have it revised for the 360. Tetrisphere was N64 only, I think.

(I don't think I've ever seen Shadowgate.)

Edwin -- glad you liked those. I played a few Infocom games in the day. Makes me nostalgic. But last time I fired up an Infocom emulator, I realized my brain is not so plastic as it was when I was 14

Zork was a great series. I can't count how many times I read this line:

"You are likely to be eaten by a grue."

I really miss the some of the early Sierra games:

Leisure Suit Larry
Space Quest
Police Quest
King's Quest

IMHO they absolutely ruined Leisure Suit Larry starting with Leisure Suite Larry 5. 1-3 were great (there was no LSL3).

They probably ruined the other series too, but I only played the first couple of those.

One thing I miss about many of these vintage games are the "feelies" they used to pack in the box with the game.

EDIT: I just remembered two more of my all-time favorite games:

Sun Dog: Frozen Legacy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SunDog_Frozen_Legacy
Privateer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steltek

Two great, immersive games for their day.

I asked a friend with young kids: how will they survive without Weird Al? It will be a lost generation.

Re: Games you miss

There are probably many others, but "Law of the West" (e.g "Commodore 64" - Law of the West - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) at least comes to mind. They could do "updated" downloadable version or something..

"GoldenEye 007" (Nintendo 64) would be also nice, since I never got the chance to play it.. Perhaps it happens, though:

GoldenEye 007 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"On January 11, 2008, 1UP.com reported that a GoldenEye port (as opposed to a remake) had been in development at Rare for several months, but stated that the title would not be released on Xbox Live Arcade since "Microsoft and Nintendo couldn't agree on the financial side of things"

But sure, there are many more...

Re: Games you miss

GoldenEye 007 would be a massive win for whoever gets it. If Nintendo put it on the VC it would probably be a straight-up port. If MS put it on XBLA, they would no doubt make it hi-def and add online multiplayer.

Because of licensing issues on the Nintendo, Microsoft, and film company sides, this will probably never happen.

Re: Games you miss

I missed GoldenEye on the N64. It was hot before I got my N64, and then I got into PC FPS shooters (I think that was the Quake era). It would definitely give it a go via Xbox Live.

Re: Games you miss

Gabriel Knight 1 & 2. Damn, those were good freaking games. Forget the 3D followups that sucked.

In fact, I miss all games that were based around following and solving a story; yes, they weren't super 3D shooters. But you could follow them for days or weeks until you finished them and it was a real adventure figuring it out.

Re: Games you miss

"Gabriel Knight" Wow...those were great games. If I recall, the main character was voiced by Tim Curry. Lots of good memories from those games.

I miss "Wing Commander" and the "Tie Fighter" series. Heck, even a good WWII flight game on the PC would be great! "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe" was so fun!

Re: Games you miss

Now you're talking about the games popular when I was in grad school, and too poor to buy a gaming computer and too busy to play them. Now I've got money but no time

I had a good high school friend who kept me up to date, and he raved about Gabriel Knight games. He aspired to one day write such a game. Sadly, I have no idea where he is now...

Re: Games you miss

I'm going to make a bold statement:

The N64was the best game system of all time. For me anyway. I will never forget playing the Zelda, and Mario 64 for the first time. Plus Goldenye with friends, and Banjo Kazooie.

Even my PS3, and 360 can't touch the level of fun I experienced with the 64

Re: Games you miss

I'm not sure what was the "best" system of all time for me. That's a tough (and personal) call. The original Atari 2600 system is near-and-dear to me. But I don't know if even all that nostalgia can touch the level of gaming (multiplayer online and single player) possible on my 360.

It's like trying to choose your favorite child.

Re: Games you miss

The SNES, I'm pretty sure, is regarded for having a large number of quality games. The PlayStation pushed gaming into a new world, which the N64 quickly expanded upon with it's AAA-titles (but little else). The PS2 is probably the best overall, IMO due to the sheer size of it's library, quality of titles, and they're still making games for it 7 years after it was launched (plus some new games are actually good!).

Re: Games you miss

If we're including PC games, I miss Dune II and Master of Orion. Sometimes the original (relatively stripped-down) versions are best, as compared to the overcomplicated beasts their successors became.

Re: Games you miss

I second Deus Ex and GoldenEye 007 (the latter might be my favorite game of all time).

The original Resident Evil for the PS1 also gets special mention.

I don't know about best, but I had the most fun with an N64 as an adult over any other console since. It was the right system with the right games at the right time in my life. I loved 1080 and Rogue Squadron, in particular. And I the rivalry my roommate and I had at the time: coming home and finding a new high score in 1080, bumping mine down a notch or two, and fighting to reclaim my title only to continue the vicious cycle

Those were good gaming days. They were also mixed with some outstanding UT and Starcraft matches.

Re: Games you miss

That web site is a great idea... great games for low prices.

Speaking of the N64...

I still have mine (not hooked up, though this thread makes me want to), with a bunch of games that still haven't been released on VC, nor have I seen them (in proper format) anywhere else. Tetrisphere is one of these games... as is Wetrix, which is actually superior to its pseudo-sequel, Aqua Aqua (for the PS2). And actually, the Dreamcast version of Wetrix was even better than the N64 version.

I have very fond memories of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, although Rare excels at making games that are brilliant for their first half as they introduce new gameplay mechanics, then gradually devolve into aimless wandering for item collection and preposterously difficult final boss battles. The game Conker's Bad Fur day (N64) was a sort of brilliant meta-commentary on this design strategy, designed (no less) by Rare itself, and as a result it's a better OVERALL game than anything the company has ever designed (and not just for the naughty bits).

Beetle Adventure Racing (N64) was another great game that took me completely by surprise... a licensed racer that was not only fun, but rather amazing. It is shocking how well this game still plays, and how fun the (very long and imaginative) tracks are to race. It also had a decent multiplayer mode.

Re: Games you miss

Gods... so many.

MOO, of course. Fallout (1 & 2... currently loving 3.) All the old Sierra games, as mentioned above. (Yeah, LSL sucked after a while... loved the Space Quest games most!)

Privateer rocked. Loved the two Crusader games. Warcraft 2! (Stop poking me!)

... and of course all the old Infocomm text games. I'll be looking at those links. I remember finding a 5.25 floppy with Leather Goddesses of Phobos on it in my basement some years back!

Re: Games you miss

Mine was Battletoads, The Killer Instinct and Gold franchise. It kicked butt on the SNES and then on the N64.

Also Shadowgate Yes was my favorite. I beat it so many times on my Gameboy.

N64 brought out the best BOND game in years. Still the best one today. And I miss Donkey Kong Country. I have to make do with the GBA's DKC games.

Even the Bongo games for Gamecube. They should 've made the Bongos able to work for the ROckband or GH games.
