Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread - Page 13

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Yowzer! Didn't expect the 6-2 drubbing that was witnessed there!

I watched first period with my 4 month old girl asleep in my arms - keeps me a bit calmer that way while my wife was handling our soon to be 3 son. Was very happy with the 2-0 lead going into the 1st intermission. Huge goal by sniper Craig Adams 8 seconds after Crosby's PP goal...

By the time we got those guys tucked into bed, I come down to a 5-1 game justa as Crosby's breakaway was underway...

Really didn't expect that at all...when Fleury stopped Ovechkin on that breakaway early in the first I felt really good. MAF has shown up to play! Caps played pretty well for the first 10 minutes but it was definitely downhill from there...

Don't really know who I would rather play in the ECF. Bruins? 'Canes? If it's the 'Canes there's a much easier road trip to Raliegh from Richmond...

Oh well. Should be exciting either way!

Great series.

Let's go PENS!

Such a shame that the big marquee matchup of the decade ended so lamely.

[sarcasm]I guess it's good that not many people got to see that after all![/sarcasm]

Woo-hoo! Red Wings survive and advance. What a great game. It was almost more than I could take, but now that they've won I've been able to enjoy the Boston-Carolina game 7. OT in game 7---there is nothing better or more intense.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Tough loss for Boston fans. Especially since the series winning goal was scored by Walker with 1:14 left in the first OT.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

That was definitely one of the more intense periods of hockey I've ever seen. I thought the Bruins were going to pull it out.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

The Hurricanes are a tough team. It will be interesting to see how they match up with the Pens. Carolina did a great job in slowing down the Bruins speedy skaters. They will have to do the same in this series. Cam Ward is quickly becoming one of the best clutch goalies in the league.

If the announcers on Versus mentioned that Brind'Amour was not on the ice to take faceoffs one more time, I was going to throw something at the TV! They must have stated that at least a dozen times in the OT session alone. Talk about beating a point to death.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Tough loss, but anything can happen in OT. Oh well, that's why we play the games and to put a positive on it; a young core of Bruins players gets yet another lesson in playoff hockey.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

The Pens v. Canes series in the ECF should be fun - Staal v. Staal. Think that Eric is certainly better than Jordan right now...Cam Ward is outplaying Fleury...Pens need to keep the same approach that they have had since Bylsma took over. Looking forward to it. WCF should be a good matchup as well.

The series begin Monday and the manage to stretch it out until June 2 if a Game 7 is needed. Home games have 2 days off between game, but there is only a single day break between some of the travel days...

Good thing is that Game 3 is on Saturday, 5/23...hmmm road trip from Richmond to the RBC Center?

Worst. Loss. EVAR.

The fact that it was Walker just added insult to injury (I blame the league, not him).

^^^

It is among the hardest ones for me. I haven't felt this down as far as sports go since 'the Catch' by the Gints against the Patriots. ;(

Sorry to see the Bruins knocked out, I actually wanted the Pens to play them despite the fact that the Bruins would have home ice advantage. That would have been a series for the ages.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Geez...Redwings look very tough again in the WCF...nice 5-2 winner yesterday...

As for the most important series - for me at least - I see the Pens being able to continue their excellent play of late - Crosby looks to be on a mission - to quote a favorite movie maybe a "mission from God".

Hope that Jordan Staal continues to pick it up and score some goals. Cam Ward has been fantastic for the 'Canes. Need to break him as they did Varlamov. That's a very tall order as Cam Ward is 6-0 and playoff series, 4-0 in game 7's and a Conn Smythe winner. Big difference in experience.

That being said - think that the Pens are too much overall for the 'Canes. Expect Cam Ward and the boys to go home in 6.

Let's go PENS!

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Colorado offers Roy coaching job. This seems like a strange choice to me. I cannot think of very many (if any) goaltenders who have been successful hockey coaches. IMO, it's because the goalie position is so much different than the other skating positions, where the players have to work as a tight unit, while the goalie is more of an individual position with a completely different skill set and fundamentals.

I witnessed a goalie to head coach disaster last season with our local OHL team. Greg Stefan (former Detroit Red Wings goalie) took over the Plymouth Whalers from long time coach, GM and team president Mike Vellucci. The team quickly sunk to the bottom of the OHL, and you could see a drastic change in how the team played -- completely lacking in fundamentals at both ends of the ice. Stefan didn't last a year, and Velllucci went behind the bench again. The team played much better, and went from last place to fourth in the conference by the end of last season.

It's no excuse, but the injuries to the Bruins make their locker room look like a MASH unit:

Kessel - Needs surgery for torn rotator cuff and labrum
Krejci - Needs surgery for hip
Ferrence - Needs surgery for groin
Kobesew- 2 broken ribs
Rechi - Kidney stone and rib injury

Hey There from Raleigh! Watch out for the Canes....the hottest goalie wins the cup and Cam Ward is the man. Plus, does anyone want to get in front of a Walker Right Cross?

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Wow...that was an exciting Game 1. Who would have thought that pivotal goals would have been scored by Satan and Boucher - with Boucher picking up the PP winner! Malkin's goal was sweet backhander - what placement to get it through!

The last couple minutes were full of furious action - the stop on Staal was great and the knuckler from 120 ft had me nervous as a Pens fan.

Fleury played well...as did Ward - he had some nice stops as well - especially to rob Guerin on a setup from Crosby.

Wish that they played tomorrow instead of the big breaks between games...

Oh well. Looking forward to Game 2. Hope that Mark Andre can continue to outduel Cam Ward in between the pipes...and the Pens keep it up offensively.

Let's go PENS!

Yeah, I'm sure the Pens are cowering in fear...
Wait, that was your first post so I'll go easy on you.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Should Detroit and Pittsburgh both advance from this round, we will see something quite rare in the post-Original Six NHL -- a Stanley Cup Finals rematch. Since 1970, this has only happened twice: 1983 & 1984 Islanders vs. Edmonton (each team won once), and 1977 & 1978 Montreal vs. Boston (the Habs won both). Montreal also beat St. Louis in 1968 & 1969 in the first two seasons after the Original Six era.

With all the multiple Cup winning teams since then, I found this fact rather amazing.

He's the only goalie who's allowed a goal to be scored by a penalty shot in finals history.

OK, I'll take Bob's advice and go easy on ya.

I am not a 'Canes fan, but Ward is also now 4-0 in Game 7's. Add that to a Cup win and Conn Smythe trophy, and that's a pretty impressive career start for a young goalie.

As a Pen's fan, I agree 100 percent. Cam Ward made some fantastic saves last night.

It's always fun playing this stats game...I saw last night that Mark Andre Fleury is now 5-0 in playoff game 1 of a series at home...

Up until Game 6 of the Caps series, he was 4-0 in playoff game OT.

Fun series - bring on game 2!

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Great game tonight. Osgood was awesome (again). I wouldn't have been too bummed going to Chicago with the series tied--it's a long series--but I definitely like it better with the Wings up 2-0.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Watched the OT in last night's Wings v. Hawks game - what a backbreaker for the young Blackhawks...

Had a couple of chances and bam - it's a 3 on 1 break for the Wings and the shot is buried. Wings up 2-0 in an instant...

Hope that the Pens have the same result and can head to Carolina with a 2 game edge.

Let's go PENS!

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Any one else glad there's hockey on again tonight? I really missed it last night. I've gotten used to there being a game every night. During the season, we don't get much hockey here so I love the wall to wall hockey that is the first rounds of the playoffs.

Hope it's a good game tonight.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Definitely not a defensive struggle tonight. It may be a long night for both goalies. 2-2 and we aren't even half way through the 1st period.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

I was thrilled to see the Penguins squash the Canes tonight. I hope they sweep them out of the playoffs.

Just sayin'.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Geno - Geno - Geno!

Hat trick for Malkin! Wow. His third goal was just sick...the Pens say it was a set play off the faceoff, but I don't know. Just awesome individual effort on his part...His parents have become quite the celebs in the crowd at the games - High Fives and Hugs all around for Vladimir and Natalia Malkin!

His interview with Christine Simpson last night after the game was great since you don't see him on camera too much. Question about having his parents at the game and around. Said that he loved it because his Mom cooks for him...

The Canes are not still out of it though. Pens need to keep it floored. Canes will be energized playing at the RBC Center...need both Sid and Malkin to keep it up. Glad to see Kunitz breakout and score FINALLY and Talbot put one in as well.

Fistacuffs at the end fo the game were insteresting - you had the Slovak Hammer Miroslav Satan throwing down out there...

Sometime chime in - is there a suspension given with a Match Penalty in the playoffs? Canes guy got one for crosschecking Letang in the chin which started the scrum at the end of the game...

Only Campbell's Magic 8-Ball knows for sure. There is a suspension for an instigator in the last 5 minutes, but if Campbell thinks you've been a good boy and have been eating your vegatables, you don't have to serve it. But if you are a big bully (an actual Colin Campbell defined term), you get a Major changed to a Match after the fact.
