Pens again need to floor it and keep up the shot advantage for yet another game in the series.

One thing I noticed on the winning OT goal was an interference call in the Pens defensive end that allowed them to clear out of their zone and start the rush. I thought the officials missed that one, and it indirectly led to the winning goal.

FYI, I'm neutral towards these two teams, so I was watching with unbiased eyes.

I hear you Scott...that was one that was missed...but I am tired of the griping that there is a great NHL conspiracy to allow the Pens to advance...Malkin made a nice move to get around Fedorov and got the shot on the net (or actually off Poti stick).

Ted Leonsis - Caps owner - was quoted that he was dismayed by the missed calls and in the 10 years he has owned the team, he was never been on the PP in OT. If I were the Caps, I would be glad that Teddy was never on the PP in OT. You'd really be in trouble having him don the skates...

Anyway....

Let's go PENS!

Randy,

I don't buy into conspiracy theories in the NHL, either, and I have no idea how the officiating was throughout the entire game -- I only watched half the third period and the OT. I just remember that play vividly for some reason. The Pens had just come off a power play, so when I saw the Pittsburgh player pick off the forechecking Cap player, I thought for sure the refs would take the opportunity to even out the overtime power play situation. I was surprised to not see the ref raise his arm immediately.

The Bruins live for another day. That was a convincing win last night. Thomas was excellent! I really hope they force a game seven.

Only a $2500 fine and no suspension for that prick Walker though. WTF?

Hopefully somebody will take his head off tomorrow night.

I'm having so much fun watching this Pens/Caps series, it almost makes me want it to go to 7 games...ALMOST. Seriously though, some great play on both sides.

I was surprised by the lack of a suspension as well, but I guess the league determined that it was not a sucker punch by reviewing the exchange. At first glance, it sure looked like one to me.

They didn't need to "determine" anything, they simply had to let the on-ice ruling stand. Any Instigator penalty in the last 5 minutes of a game calls for a 2-5-10-Game and a game suspension. So he was already suspended, they had to overturn it in order to let him play, which is absurd! Colin Campbell should use a magic 8-ball to make decisions, he'd make more sense if he did. Lucic belts a guy with a gloved fist/stick after being attacked and he's suspended. Aaron Ward gets cold cocked when he's got his hands in his gloves and down by his sides, and it's "part of hockey."

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Jeff you are right about one thing, it should have been an automatic suspension. Before I posted my first response, I went and read the rule and somehow missed the part about an automatic suspension for the instigator when the fight occurs in the last five minutes of regulation. After your response, I reread the rule and it should have been at least a one game suspension---unless they determined that Walker was not the instigator.

Looks like it has been another great game in the Pens-Caps series. Unfortunately, I missed most of it, but I did get to listen to first part of the 3rd period and watch the the rest of the period. The Igloo is rocking tonight and the OT should be great.

Darn. I really wanted the Penguins to put away the Capitals tonight. Game seven should be very interesting.

On to the Conference Finals for the Hawks. After the first round the media had elevated Roberto Luongo to Messianic status. But after he gave up that terrible tying goal in the third tonight, he folded like a cheap suit. Nice to see Chicago's young guys taking advantage and rising to the occasion.

Argh! I guess I got what I asked for, a game seven in the Pens/Caps series. These pesky Caps just won't give up. I can't believe the Pens gave up 2 goals so fast after taking the lead. Now they have to try to win in a hostile environment...

Me too, Me too.

Pens couldn't hold a 3rd period lead AGAIN and the Caps fight their way back. The Pens own players did just a good of job of getting in Fleury's way as the Caps. Guerin and Gill didn't necessarily help him out any on two of the goals...Caps got some scoring from others as well. Nice penalty draw by Semin to setup the game tieing goal in the 3rd...grrrr.

Pens game out shooting in the first and couldn't put it in on a 5-3 man advantage...The two Caps goals in the third less than a minute apart were a killler. Kozlov's second goal took a weird bounce off a defender's stick, around the boards and Kozlov's made them pay.

The winning goal in OT was after Scuderi rocked one off the crossbar. Nice setup play by the Caps. Talbot's stick broke in the faceoff. Steckel again scores a big goal...

Didn't want to have the Pens go back to the Verizon Center. Such is life. Hope that they can generate as many chances and CONVERT this time around- they really need to get up by a couple of goals seeing how they have been holding leads...should be a blast to watch.

Let's go PENS!

Randy

PS. Caught a little bit of the Canucks v. Blackhawks. Kane made really nice move to ice it for the 'hawks. They are a very exciting team to watch. Should be interesting Western Conference final - think that the 'Wings will put away the Ducks tonight.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Was the Ward hit in the last 5 minutes, or before that point? According to Walker, Ward challenged him to a fight, but Ward denies that. Maybe Walker convinced Campbell.

At least it looks like Ward will be able to play tonight. Apparently he doesn't plan on wearing any sort of face shield! Brave or stupid?

Hopefully the Bs will get payback by winning tonight (and Thursday).

It was at 17:13 of the 3rd (2:47 left to play). Ward got a roughing, Walker got 2 for instigating, 5 for fighting, a 10 minute misconduct and a game misconduct. It was a textbook instigating in the last 5 minutes call, exactly as written, and it's something the refs don't take lightly because they know it includes the suspension. They obviously thought he deserved it.

Now I personally think the rule is stupid, but how exactly is Bettman's "kinder, gentler NHL" supposed to happen if his own little lapdog is overturning the enforcement of his "kindler, gentler" rules? Someone with a hint of paranoia may take Campbell's after the fact changing of a simple misconduct to a match penalty (with included suspension) on Lucic compared with him overturning this on-ice ruling to go easy on Walker to be a wee sign of bias by Bettman/Campbell. Add in Campbell calling Lucic a "bully", the lack of punishment on the Habs last series, and dismissing the Walker punch as "something that happens in hockey"; and maybe the paranoid have a point.

Re: The Ward v. Walker incident.

I think it's pretty silly for them to overturn this while Brashear gets 6 games for his incident. It really doesn't make sense from a consistency standpoint and makes the league look bad as a whole...

While I didn't hear what was said between the players, Ward is clearly standing there with his hands down and Walker drops the gloves and unloads. I thought the refs on-ice call was accurate and correct given what was shown. Challenge to a fight or not, it fit the bill.

Yep, that would hurt a lot more than some type of retaliation. But I know the Bruins won't forget the incident (they even said so on the news yesterday); however, defeating the Canes would be a great way to speak volumes here. I don't know what to expect tonight in game six. But I will be keeping an eye on Walker, and I have this feeling that the Bruins may do so as well.

A guy on another site analyzed some video, and Ward never opened his mouth to Walker. Now unless Aaron's a ventriloquist, the invitation Walker spoke of was BS; which was pretty much confirmed by Walker's "I thought I felt a punch" embellishment today.

Bottom line, he suckered him. He knows it, Ward knows it, the refs know it; and everyone else knows Colin Campbell couldn't be competent handing out demerits at a Girl Scout rally, never mind discipline in the NHL.

Either "Sugar" Shawn Thornton gets him first shift, or he looks over his shoulder till next year. Either way, Walker knows it's coming (just like Begin).

Whew! The Bruins win, 4-2, and force a game seven in Boston Thursday night! Man, those Canes were giving it all they had in the third period.

Go Bruins!

Very nice. My dear Canucks lost it!! I know they wouldn't have made it past the next round even if they did make it through this one.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Let's get ready for Game 7 - Pens v. Caps tonight!

I am on pins and needles for this one...Can the Pens get a few past Varlamov? They had a huge onslaught of shots last game in the first and only scored once. Need to keep it up and put some pucks in the net.

As I said before the Pens need to get out front by a couple of goals. The Caps will be fired up for sure to play on their ice in front of their home crowd...Ovechkin has been a terror on the home ice in this series.

They showed a shot of Crosby leaving the ice as the Caps were celebrating their Game 6 win - he paused and watched and looked p*ssed big time. I expect him to have a big game tonight. Let's hope that Malkin gets going as well.

Big rumor is if Gonchar will play or not. I'd love to see him back - dress 7 defensemen even if he justs play on the PP.

Huge game - doesn't get any better than Game 7.

Let's go PENS!

I'd like to see the Penguins win as well. Heck, with Chicago having advanced, and (maybe) Detroit and Boston advancing soon, we'll have three of the original six in the final four. I really don't want to see the Capitals in the next round.

Go Penguins (for at least one more game!)

Go Bruins!

Word on the PG website is that Gonchar skated at the game day skate with little apparent issues on both the PP unit and along with regular defensive partner Brooks Orpik.

Would love to see him out their heading up the point on the PP and get the rush up ice starting...let's hope he plays, plays with no ill effects and plays well...

I'd happily take another series winner by Gonchar - just as he did in the series against the Flyers!

Let's go PENS!

Since the chances look good for my Bruins (at home, figured out the Canes defensive scheme, broke Cam ward for 4 twice in a row), I say:

GO PENS!!!! (But if AO and the Caps want to beat them up a little more, that's ok too!!).

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

My oh my, the Penguins are all over the Capitals. It's 5-1, at the end of two periods. I don't want the Bruins to see this Penguins team. So, Pittsburgh, lighten up a little. Let the Capitals back into the game, and soften it up a bit. Thanks a bunch. Then maybe that will carry over into the next series.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Didn't really have much invested in the Caps/Pens series winner, but man...what a letdown for Game 7. I hate blowouts. Almost felt sorry for the Caps after the five goal blitz. Oh well...I'll get caught up on some neglected TiVo viewing.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

I'm glad we decided to watch a movie instead of me watching Pens vs. Caps. I turned it on to see a 5-1 score! Unless you're a Pens fan, it couldn't have been very entertaining for a Game 7.

Man, what a rout. As a Pens fan I loved it of course, but after seeing the first six games, I don't think anyone was expecting anything like this. The Pens seemed to be posessed and determined, not just a few players but everyone was playing their heart out.

Despite a few boo-birds, the Caps fans showed some class by applauding their team heartily at the end of the game. Varlamov even got some applause when he got pulled. He helped get them that far after all.
