Yeah, but they also stunk up the joint in the first two periods. As flat a performance as I've seen out of them since the swoon a few months back. Ward was great, but that wasn't the best Boston could throw at him.

Pens v. Caps - Round 2 tonight...

Well, didn't end up in Game 1 as I would have liked, but saw some good things...

Pens had a ton of odd man rushes but didn't score as needed, while the Caps converted to get the game winner...

Amazing save by Varly on Crosby's shot...just a slight angle change in direction of the shot and he would have scored...

Pens power play is anemic still which is a concern. They were generating more chances 5 on 5. Caps on had 2 PP in Game 1, but penalty by Cooke for the 5-3 was a killer which led to Ovechkin's goal.

Looking for a rebound tonight by the Pens to tie the series up at 1 game a piece...

Oh yeah. Watched the Wings v. Ducks game yesterday for a bit. Reminded my of the game 5 cup final a bit where the Wings had a ton more shots but didn't win the game. This should be an interesting series as it plays out...

Jeff,

I agree as far as the first two periods are concerned, but if Boston can throw more at him in the remaining games than they did in the third period yesterday, that will be quite amazing.

I don't know what the Pens can do to get a power play. It seems to be a chronic problem and I don't see it getting solved this late in the season. They can kill penalties just fine but they don't make the other team pay for the penalties the other team commits.

Hopefully they can bounce back tonight before they come home!

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

GRRRR....third period downfall again....Pens v. Caps...lose again...

Malkin is not playing very well at all right now in terms of getting points on the board. Where as he was a force in the Flyers series, he seems to have disappeared in these first two games... I was fuming during the Pens powerplay in the third (right before Malkin's penalty) that did absolutely nothing. No sustained pressure in the zone, zero quality scoring chances...then Malkin gets that silly tripping penalty...grrr.

The Caps win the faceoff and run a beauty of a set play and Ovechkin blows one by Fluery. Ovechkin's last goal was a really nice move to deke Gonchar...but that sort of stuff needs to stop!

They need both games in Pitt, but first step is to win game 3. Let's not get ahead thinking about both - need game 3 first.

Crosby is playing out of his mind right now, but needs some help from some other folks...where's Staal or Kunitz or Guerin or Sykora or Gonchar or Kennedy or you get my point.

On the other side, the Caps have Steckel scoring two goals in the series when he only had 8 all year. Flieshman scores the other Caps goal in Game 1...No Semin, Backstrom or Green. So that is a good thing, but two many goals from #8.

Game 3 - must win. Then think about Game 4.

Oh yeah. Here is some other fun facts. 3 times the Pens have come back down 0-2 in a series and won it. Once in '91 against Boston. Once in '92 against the Caps and once again in '96 against the Caps. I'd like to add 2009 against the Caps to that list.

Let go PENS!

One of Buccigross' greatest hockey nicknames (along with "Chicken Parm" Ray Ferraro) is Pat "The Little Ball of Hate" Verbeek.

I only watched a little of last night's Caps - Pens game. Ovechkin's one-timer goal from the left circle was amazing! He has a deadly shot.

Yeah, but they made it easy on him. He had some great saves, to be sure, but many shots were right in his breadbasket. The B's were flat, out of the rhythm required to close the deal, especially on the PP. Being just a hair out of position or a fraction of a second late turns a goal into a save in this league.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Jeff, Aaron,

I hope the B's bounce back tomorrow tonight and take game three. And the Red Wings could have themselves a series, esp. with it shifting to Anaheim for tonight and following.

I am having a blast with Versus. It's really wonderful being able to see so many games.

That really doesn't bother me all that much. I grew up with the best announcers in the business for some sports, so anything short of that is ... expected.

The beautiful HD picture helps to make up for the announcers. I wish I could get the Hockey Night in Canada audio to synch up with the picture from Versus-HD -- I would have the best of both worlds.

Not sure which series you were watching, but the HD feed from Vancouver sucked...very jittery. I hope they have things rectified in Chicago because I won't have the benefit of the local feed on Thursday.

Did you guys see how Crosby asked the ref to tell the fans to stop throwing hats on the ice? Classic! (Then when he got his, a single hat got tossed down.)

I would rather watch a jittery Versus feed with lame announcers than what I've got now, which is this:

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Boring as the Vs. announcers are, I gotta admit I need a break from Jack Edwards. His hamfisted, schticky, over the top announcing style makes me want to hurl. His Patriots Day* end of game summary where he likened the Bruins to a "rag tag bunch of farmers" and the exiting Habs fans to "fleeing redcoats", had any real Bruins fan reaching for the vomit bag. Even Derek Sanderson would call it too much homerism.

*For those outside of NE, Patriots Day celebrates the "Shot Heard Round the World" fired at the Battle of Lexington and Concord in April 1775, the first official battle of the American Revolution.

Jeff,

Your Sanderson comment almost makes me want to reinstate the bush rule.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Can't stand the announcers for Versus. But in Chicago we're lucky enough to have Pat Foley, one of the top announcers in any sport. I can do without Eddie Olczyk as color man, though. I do enjoy the weekend Hawks games because we get a fill in (usually Steve Konroyd) when Eddie O is off doing his NBC duties.

Well, Derek was cool. His homerism was because he was a Bruin and wore his heart on his sleeve. Jack's just an idiot, and his act is mostly contrived schtick. It's like the difference between the old "Here we go Bruins" spontaneous cheer at the Garden and the new "Get Loud!!" cheer started by a message on the jumbotron.

I'm hoping so here in Pittsburgh.

Ovechkin's shots were just so fast. He is a lot of fun to watch even though I want to beat him. He really had Fleury's number last night. Agreed that Malkin needs to get some goals fast. I'm flashing back to his mediocre postseason from last year. Crosby is a machine.

I'm sure most Wings fans were expecting a tough series. I know I was. The game on Sunday was great to watch and Hiller got better as the game went on because the Wings were bringing it in the first two overtime periods. Osgood was also good. Just not good enough.

Most teams would have a hard time bouncing back from the loss with the next game on the road, but the Red Wings are not most teams. I expect them to play well. I'd imagine that the Ducks will come out aggressively, but I think Detroit will weather the storm and that it'll be another tight game.

I'm sorry I missed the Pittsburgh-Washington game. I was stuck grading and missed the great performances by Crosby and Ovechkin.

When the Rangers were playing, I tried listening to the audio from my regular MSG channel, but yeah, the audio mismatch was no good, so I had to suck it up and listen to the crap that is VS. announcers.

I really wish I had MSG HD; As much as I hated Versus coverage, I just can't watch the standard station.

No problems with the Versus-HD feed here in Detroit on Comcast. The picture quality is exceptional. Hockey in HD is heaven.

I watched much of the game tonight between the Black Hawks and the Canucks. I'm ashamed to say I didn't pick up the name of the Chicago player who is an amazing stick-handler. Three or four times he did things with the puck that I thought were incredible. I'll have to catch his name the next game.

Are you thinking of Patrick Kane? We watched him play in the Ontario Hockey League a couple of years ago, and he was impressive then, too.

Scott,

You really would think I would know, but I couldn't zero in on his number, and the announcers weren't much help. I think it could be Kane -- whomever it was may have been wearing the no. 24. I will watch the next game very closely and find out who it was.

Gosh, the Red Wings are down 1-2 in this series. I really do hope they bounce back and win game four.

And I have this sneaky suspicion that the Red Wings and Penguins are not making it out of this round. The Bruins? I have no idea.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Here's hoping all but the Canucks/Hawks series go to seven brutal games.

Penguins are toast. I'd rather see Detroit than Anaheim against the Canucks.
