As a Wings fan, I hope you get what you're wishing for, but I think it is a mistake. If they make it to the finals, Detroit is going to be real hard to beat.

I guess I'll have to listen to tonight's game in Columbus as it is not on here. I was hoping to watch since it is the Wings and the first playoff game in Columbus.

LOL! Aaron, don't we know it! This series shows Boston up 3-0, but for all practical purposes, it's 0-0. I just hope Montreal believes that it's really 0-0 for just one more game.

The only data I have to go on is a game each against Detroit and San Jose. The Bruins fared well against Detroit with a convincing victory (and a great playoff style game) and were beaten soundly by San Jose. Not a big sample, but it's all I got. Plus, I like the B's defensive scheme against Detroit's offense, i.e. force the low percentage perimeter shots, let the goalie see them, collect the rebounds, and shut down the front of the net style.

Not by any means is it picking a guaranteed loss vs. a cakewalk, more like choosing from instant death vs. permanent injuries. But when you're asked to pick a poison, ya gotta pick a poison.

Speaking of defensive schemes, did anyone catch how well the Penguins played defensively last night? I was very impressed. And as one of the commentators remarked, the Flyers -- whom I was rooting for to even the series -- looked tired on a couple of occasions, and were not getting their line changes to occur quickly enough, particularly in the second and third periods.

Game the Pens gave up 46 shots? Yikes! Fleury was outstanding in net for the Pens in that game, but I wouldn't call it one of the Pens better defensive efforts. Excellent goaltending - absolutely. Good overall team defense. Don't think as much. Flyers controlled the puck in the Pens end way too much and the Pens did nothing in the 3rd, other than Crosby's shot off the crossbar. Didn't spend any sustained time in the Flyers end. Plus Philly had WAY too many PP. Lucky they were 0 for 8.

I have been a bit concerned as the Flyers keep coming hard at the Pens - didn't expect less - but the Pens keep withstanding the storm. I think that the Flyers are saying good things, but deep down, they gotta be pretty dejected after game 4. I look for the Pens to come out strong, feed off the crowd, taking a early lead and never trail. Pens win 4-2 with an empty netter by Staal.

Here's to closing out the Flyers in the ol'd Igloo tonight. No trips back across state. Drive the stake in and twist! It's a whiteout tonight in Pittsburgh.

Pens win in 5!

Randy,

I watched most of the Flyers - Penguins game tonight, switching back-and-forth between that and the Bulls - Celtics game. The Flyers were inspired, weren't they? I never expected them to win game five in Pittsburgh. Looks like this one will go the distance, although who knows at this point.

Ugh. Not happy after that game last night. Pens did come out jumping outshooting the Flyers 15-5 in the first period. Knuble even said during the interview between period that the Flyers did not have the intensity for an eliminination game.

It was downhill from there. Malkin / Crosby got no support from their linemates and they can't do it all themselves. The 3rd line played reasonable well. Thought down 1-0 that the Pens had a chance but the goal to go up 2-0 killed them. The 3rd goal was a result of trying to pinch in and take a chance...overall I am very disappointed with the game...

Flyers played very well - again - and just won't go away.

Pens shuffled their lineup a bit - missed the beginning of the game as I was putting my son to bed, but Boucher was in the D lineup and Satan was playing as well...hmmm...

Need to close them out in Philly on Saturday. Don't want to see a 7th game...

My oh my. The Capitals and Rangers are playing yet another game. As a Boston fan, I don't particularly want to see either of these teams. This one looks to be going seven games.

Now that Lundquist is shown to be mortal, I'd rather face the Rags. The Caps had the B's number this year like nobody else.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Woot. Woot. On to round two! Nice comeback by the Pens against the hated cross-state rivals.

Think that Talbot taking those shots from Carcillo was a good thing to get the Pens going a bit. Talbot's shushing the crowd as he was lead to the box was great...

Two knock'em in goals were pretty nice too. The winning goal by Gonchar was a blast! Guerin skated past Biron just, just before the puck got to him. I don't know how he wasn't hit by it...

Pens can play anybody but the Rangers in the 2nd round depending on how things shake out...I really don't care too much who they get...maybe not Boston yet. Would love to take out the Caps since there is another team's fans that gives Sid no love. Maybe not as bad as the Crosby sucks chants to the organ in Philly, but pretty darn close. When I went to the March Pens v. Caps game in DC, guy in the stands had a Caps 87 jersey with name "Crosby Sucks". Who spends their hard earned cash that way? At least get a Ovie jersey or something useful...

Well, the Sharks once again did an excellent imitation of the Ottawa Senators with an early round playoff exit. This is the last time I will ever pick that team in a playoff pool. I don't care if they go undefeated in the regular season!

The list I could write would explode the HTF server. LOL

So, after seeing the Rangers blow the last few game, my dreams of another cup have fallen to the wayside. I would have loved to see them win Game 5 because that kind of momentum would have been enough to get past Boston, but if they eek out a victory tonight, I'm worried about their chances.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

That was a really rough loss for the Devils last night. They went from thinking they were going to win the series to getting knocked out of the series in 80 seconds flat. Brutal!

Caps/Pens should be some great hockey. The Caps have an edge, based on what I've seen in the regular season, but then again this Pens team is a different team than it was just a few months ago. Heck, after that comeback in Philly I don't know that many teams would be eager to face them.

That is pretty ridiculous about the "Crosby Sucks" jersey. Crosby is a lot of things but sucking is not one of them! As much as I dislike other teams stars sometimes, I won't say they suck. Overrated, maybe.

For the record, I would love to have Ovechkin as a Penguin, even though I cheer when he gets splattered against the wall.

Actually, he would look much more appropriate in a Boston Bruins uniform.

Seriously, I loved his play in that series. He was a lot of fun to watch.

Love his enthusiasm, love his skills, absolutely love his toughness and grit; but I would want Chara to knock him upside the head for the "Prime Time" celebration stuff. Kind of like Fisk did to Deion when he wrote the $$ in the dirt at home plate. Not that Ovechkin is Deion, far from it, but in a town where Bobby Orr used to put his head down and skate to the blueline because he didn't want to embarrass the opponent, a little humility goes a long way. Other than that, I'd go as far as reissuing #8.

Crosby may be a whiner, and I have first hand information that he's a bit of a tyrant in practices (demanding perfection, which isn't a bad thing); but he's knuckled up 3 times, which puts him 2 up on Gretzky in my book. I'd take him on my team any day, any time. One of the only "enemy" players I really, really enjoy watching.

Jeff,

Whoa -- which number 8 (i.e., which sport) are you referring to? Answer very carefully.

For Ovechkin? If it meant that much, I'd give it. I'm of the opinion that retired numbers have gotten a little silly on the Bruins, and reissuing would be an idea who's time has come. I truly think they went over the line with '24', which was unofficially retired anyway (nobody wore it after O'Reilly). If you ask me, the only thing retiring Terry's number did was ensure a sellout, and insult a guy by "recognizing" him 17 years after his last game. That act alone kind of cheapened the whole business IMHO.

Wow is right when it comes to the end of the two games last night...finished up Caps v. Rangers and flipped to Devils v. Canes. Thought the Canes were toast and then the scored to tie it up! I kinda zoned out waiting for OT to start and then all of a sudden Staal scores. Zikes...the Devils looked like a kid who just saw his puppy get stolen from him!

Caps v. Pens will be awesome to watch. I am exchanging jabs with my Brother-in-law who is a newly minted Caps fan (last year's team got him interested). We will be up in the DC area this weekend attending a previously scheduled event for our kids. Will have the game on the DVR and get it going when we are back at the house....

Toss out the regular season results for these teams IMO. Pens have changed quite a bit...think that the Pens offense will be able to get after the Caps young Russian goalie...so, Pens in 6.

Jeff,

Oh, I must have misunderstood. You mentioned at least two sports people (Fisk and Ovechkin), and then the number eight. I thought immediately of Yastrzemski and Ken Hodge.

Definitely not Yaz. But maybe Cam (just maybe, and only for Ovechkin). I only mentioned Fisk because he slapped down Deion Sanders for doing his "Prime Time" showboating at the plate; not running out balls and drawing dollar signs. I wish someone would slap a little humility into Ovechkin the same way.

Any chance we could add Kobe Bryant's name to that list?

Convincing win for the B's against the Whalercanes, picking up where they left off and putting 4 past Ward (who's supposed to be the "hot" goalie). Lucic back on the first line; putting defensemen's heads on a swivel and opening it up for Kessel and Savard, who had a field day. Still waiting for a team that can solve big Looch like Chara solved Staal.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

The Black Hawks had a good comeback against the Canucks tonight. Down 2-0, things weren't looking all that good. And then things turned around.

I really wanted them to come back home at 1-1. It was a bit odd -- I was rooting for one Chicago team to lose (the Bulls), and for the other Chicago team to win (the Black Hawks).

Did anyone catch the answer to the trivia question? I missed it. It asked who the all-time goal scorer for the Black Hawks was in the playoffs. I had a couple of guesses, but I don't know what the answer turned out to be.

It looks like both Detroit and Boston will get challenged in this round. The Hurricanes were my dark horse team in this playoffs -- I picked them to get to the Cup Finals in our office pool. Anaheim has played the Wings very tough through two games. The combination of a veteran playoff team and a hot young goalie can be very tough to beat in the playoffs, and the Ducks have that combo going in full force right now.

Scott,

Agreed. The hot goalie is what I am most concerned about. The Bruins fired a lot of shots last night -- some of them almost impossible to stop -- and yet they were stopped brilliantly by Cam Ward.
