I loved what Ken Dryden had to say about Orr in the article. And the stat regarding the +124 ("... the Bruins scored 124 more even-strength or shorthanded goals than they gave up when Orr was on the ice") is quite telling.

Another amazing stat is he went the entire Stanley Cup playoff ('72) without ever being scored on while he was on the ice. Orr's unbelievable offensive talent frequently overshadowed the fact that he was the best defenseman (in every sense of the word) who ever played the game. No matter how many times he rushed up into the play, his speed still allowed him to be the first man back to break up a scoring chance by the other team. He was like having Paul Coffey and Larry Robinson on the ice at the same time, in the same person (except Orr was better than both).

Jeff,

Or, how about if he weren't a defenseman? The article also mentions the possibility that several goals from the 1976 season were not credited to Orr due to deflections. Still, 46 goals is a good total, and it is nothing to sneeze at.

Deflections that no one else claimed happened, except Bobby. He was famously humble and team oriented. He was always wary of showing others up, never celebrating a goal, just putting his head down and going to the blueline. It's no shock that in the most famous "celebration" of a goal in history, the "celebration" was due to Orr being tripped in front of the net.

As far as him being a forward? Well, we already know what Orr as a forward, with no defense and no physical game, would look like. It would look like Wayne Gretzky.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Bruins get Montador and Recchi and a 2nd round pick for Nokeleinen (injured) and 2 guys who have had chances but never stayed up. Gritty defenseman and much needed left handed shot for PP, both have deep playoff experience. I'll take it for the price. Didn't give up much, didn't get any game breakers, but certainly look better than yesterday (i.e. PJ Axelson on the #1 PP ).

Best line I've seen today:

Quote:
Monticor? The Bruins traded for that tiger who mauled Sigfried and Roy? Wow, no one will mess with them now!

What's that? Montador? Oh.

Nevermind.

Jeff,

Wayne Gretzky x 2.

Or, if you moved Gretzky to defense, you would have Paul Coffey.

Isn't Recchi 62 years old?

Coffey's one of the fastest skaters ever, but only in one direction. The guy claimed to play defense and backchecked worse than most forwards. I'm pretty sure he's the only defenseman in the HOF with a lifetime minus in +/-. John Muckler once called Coffey "nothing but 4th forward" and a "defensive liability", which is pretty bad. What's even worse is Muckler was Coffey's coach at the time.

Yes, but he gives 110% (which is about 100% more than Kovalev).

Check your math! Kovalev gives 100% effort 15% of the time. That works out to more than 10%, I think.

You know, Jeff, your Bruins are turning into the Habs. First, it's an ex-coach, then Ryder, and now Recchi. Pretty soon the team colors will change to red, blue and white.

Scott,

I realize profanity is allowed on this Board, but I didn't think flagrant insults were allowed.

Bruins are in a free fall at this time.

I'm thinking it has something to do with all those ex-Habs.

Ok Pens fans...

7-1-1 under new Coach Bylsma...looked solid last night in Florida. Things I liked the most - 46 shots on net. 2 goals from Kennedy and a nice move from Letang to score as well. Last game on road trip is Sunday in DC.

I am really looking forward to going. Even though I am a Pens diehard, I really hope Ovechkin plays. Sat out last night due to a heal injury - wandering in front of a shot in practice of all things. Really wanted to see him and Malkin go head to head...

It's still really tight in the East at the bottom...let's hope Pens keep winning and get themselves into the playoffs contention on much more solid ground...

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Well, the Bruins showed some signs of life early in the third period today, but this effort isn't going to get it done in the playoffs. I'm quite uncomfortable with Fernandez in goal, too. But I'm still pleased to be getting a 'Game of the Week' fairly regularly these days.

I only watched a few minutes of the Oilers - Maple Leafs game.

Centennial year not going well for Habs. Carbo fired by his buddy Gainey for basically losing the entire team, Carey "Second Coming" Price can't stop a beachball, and association with gangsters and all hours partying rumors are rampant.

Something stinks in Bleu Blanc Rouge land. And here I thought the B's had it bad.

The Flyers have been alternated wins and losses, beating the Bruins and Predators, but losing to the Flames and Devils. So which team will show up tonight?

Come playoff time, anything goes. Just don't count out the Flyers.

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

The Carbonneau firing was surprising, but the team had been struggling lately (as have several teams ). This appears to be a move to try and salvage something for the playoffs. We'll have to wait and see how it works out, as well as who the Habs coach will be next season -- it certainly will not be Gainey.

I guess the Bruins know who their next coach will be now... Carbonneau.

Yeah, maybe after he goes someplace else and coaches a real team first.

Jeff,

That could be taken at least two ways.

Did Julien coach anywhere after Montreal fired him and before Boston hired him? I'm not being funny here -- I really do not know.

Seriously, the NHL seems to recycle coaches more than any other league, including the NBA.

April 2007. He was in NJ, and was second in the east, when Lamorello fired him just before the playoffs.

Yes, it's shocking that Lou Lamorello fired a successful coach just before the playoffs. It's so unlike him.

My heart sank as I saw another loss by Boston last night (and a shutout, no less). They're 3-6-1 in their last ten games. I now think that they will be extended to six games in the final before they win the Cup.

It almost looked like the Pens were going to have a let-down at home last night, but they somehow managed to pull it back together in the 3rd period and won it on Malkin's shoot-out goal. I can't believe how bad he made their goalie look!

After tomorrow's road game, it's all home games for the rest of March!

The Blues are the best team in the NHL since the All-Star Break. Only 2 pts out of a playoff spot!

Geez...another SO, third in a row..this time a loss to Columbus. No Pens could put it in behind Mason...too bad I missed their furious comeback in the 3rd. Wife wanted to watch Grey's Anatomy and I forget to hit record on the DVR...

Just to go back a couple of games, I enjoyed my experience at the Pens v. Caps game on Sunday. Lots of Pens fans around the Verizon Center. Missed some of the first because we got caught in traffic. Caps fans weren't too bad - they did get on us a bit when they tied it up in the 3rd.

Was satisfying to see Sid score in the SO for the winner and Ovechkin get shut down...the Caps fans gave Sid a pretty hard time - lots of "whiner" signs. Baby dolls in Crosby jerseys. Even saw a Caps fan with a Caps Jersey with "Crosby Sucks" as the name. Some people need a better way to spend their cash...oh well.

Onto the push for the end of the season and a LONG home stand.

Go Pens!

Re: Hockey Talk: The Official NHL 2008-2009 Thread

Well, winding down...Pens lose in another SO to the Sens...this time blowing a 2 goal lead - BUT - come back the next day and dispatch the 1st place Bruins..

That was a fun game (as a Pens fan) to watch. Gave up the lead twice, but came back...Really like the Line with Guerin - Crosby - Kunitz. Plus, Staal is playing pretty well now too.

Pens need to keep it up though since just about everybody but Carolina has more games left than the Pens. 5th place today. Lots of game coming up at home. 8-0-2 in last 10. I'll take it.

I was listening to the Flames / Red Wings game tonight. It's been a while since I've caught a game on the radio. It was actually quite a lot of fun. It's currently 3-1 Calgary, in the third period.

On another note, I don't know if anyone on this Board is from Cleveland, but I was surfing through my radio stations a few weeks ago, and discovered that I could get the Cleveland Cavaliers radio network. Tonight, it was coming in from Big Rapids, Michigan as clear as can be. It's AM Radio 1100.

One of the reasons I love my XM service is that I get to listen to Wings' games. It is not as good as watching them on TV, but it is a pretty enjoyable way to get a hockey fix. It seems to translate pretty well to radio.

Detroit got back into the game after falling behind 4-1, but an empty netter made the final 5-3. With the Sharks starting to find their game again, Detroit doesn't have much room for error if they want to be the one seed.

I agree, the sport does translate well to radio.

Yeah, the Flames got to Osgood early, as the article over at ESPN mentions. I actually thought he was making some really good saves in the early going, too.

I looked to see how hot Calgary has been lately. They're only 5-5 in their last ten, but Ottawa is 9-1!

I'm crossing my fingers that the Habs don't make the playoffs.
