It was a nice nod in the episode to the actor Philip Glenister who played Gene Hunt on the BBC series.

I didn't get the nod until the second time I watched the ep. "Glenisters" LOL.

I asked Gord there about the music and he said that Acorn is "very hopeful to get all the music licensed for the DVDs."

Good ep. I'm going to miss this show

I liked this version better than the British version of the ep.

From my memory, most of the episode had little in common with the British version until they got to the swingers party.

Re: Life on Mars (US) season 1

Liked the show but 2 things were just too obvious....

1. I knew Gina Gershan(sp?) was the murderer because there is no reason to have a known name on the show for 5 minutes worth of air time. Kinda of anti climatic.

2. I knew Annie was the girl on the cover of Sams childhood magazine.

Re: Life on Mars (US) season 1

I really enjoyed last week's episode, and I'm sorry to hear the show is being cancelled. It's a very interesting show- and the only show I watch on ABC.

I guess that really depends in part, at least, on what masters they are given. If they are simply given standards conversions of the R2 DVD masters, then there will be automatically be music substitutions, because the R2 version had some music replaced.

For Acorn to even be able to attempt to clear all the music, they will have to have access to the transmitted versions of the episodes. Can we be sure that Acorn will even know the difference or will take the effort to closely scrutinise what they're sent?

I went ahead and bought the R2s anyway (when they dipped to about GBP10.00 each). Figured the odds of Acorn clearing any more music than was cleared for the R2 were not too great, plus it will be 2010 before they even put out series two, whereas both series are readily available in the UK (as well as series 1 of Ashes to Ashes). Oh, and Acorn's British releases are usually pretty high-priced anyway.

Re: Life on Mars (US) season 1

Wow!

I have to say that as great as Lost was tonight on ABC, to me the highlight of the evening on that network was Episode 15 of this soon to be extinct show, Life on Mars. At least we get a penultimate episode next week and then a "Final" episode on April 1st (an appropriate date?). I'm actually looking forward to Life on Mars more than to Lost next week - and they are both must watches for me. For those who never had an opportunity to get into this series I highly recommend the upcoming "Complete Series" DVD release this fall.

Didn't see that ending coming.

Re: Life on Mars (US) season 1

Agreed, wow.

Out of curiosity, do we know how long he's been in the past so far? I mean they said he spent like two weeks undercover before this episode even started, so I was just wondering.

No idea. Time clues have been few and far between.

Re: Life on Mars (US) season 1

I guess they wrote that in after they knew the show was toast? Man, even knowing the show was done that caught me totally off guard.

According to the previews:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
They seemed to make it blatantly obvious that Ray survives without much of a scratch. Chris no so much. If I didn't know this show was done I probably wouldn't have watched the previews so I guess I get the double whammy.

Sorry, can't agree there as Life is no where close to Lost for me. Mars will be forgotten very soon as just a one hit type wonder and Lost will remain a much talked about show once it ends.

Read what I said again, Jeff. I never stated that Life on Mars is a better show than Lost is. I simply stated that for me, as great as Lost was last Wednesday, Life on Mars provided the biggest surprise of the evening and the most enjoyment that night. The way that this much too short series (Life) is winding down appears to be very well done and I expect that a lot will be packed into the final two episodes if last week's show is any indication. From the start Life on Mars has been blessed with a great cast and some very clever plot lines. I fully expect the upcoming Complete Series DVD set of 17 episodes to be well worth one's time if they missed it during the first go round. I hope that someday we will be able to get not only the American version on DVD but the British version (both seasons) in Region One format. A deluxe package of both versions would be outstanding, but probably out of the question due to logistics involved in such a project.

Ironically, I didn't get into Lost until season 2 but thanks to the recommendation of a friend I purchased the Season One DVD set and came up to speed before Season Two premiered. And I've been hooked ever since - even during the series' ups and downs. While there will be no Season Two or beyond for Life, it will still be available to those who missed it on its initial presentation. Without a doubt Lost is the more complex and more complicated series (although both share some time travel elements with a touch of mysticism) and is the more "memorable" series. A series that spans six seasons (actually more with all the garbage that ABC pulled in its scheduling) is bound to leave a bigger footprint. I would totally agree that Lost is one of my all-time favorites but I also have been enjoying Life on Mars during its too-brief run. And last Wednesday in a back to back viewing, Life intrigued me more than Lost. That's not to mean that over the long (and sometimes plodding) haul, Lost isn't the better series.

Speaking of ABC, doesn't anyone else feel a bit insulted that the network that has killed Life on Mars, Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies has also tried to force on us the absolutely abysmal Better Off Ted which gets my vote as the Turkey of the Year. What a derivative, unfunny piece of garbage. The cast of that show deserves much better than that. For the first time in memory I cancelled a Season Pass on my DVR before finishing watching the pilot episode. The only reason I stayed to the end was in the hope that there would be some sort of reveal explaining the pollution on my screen. Thanks for nothing, ABC.

As mentioned in a previous post, we will be getting a Region One version of the British version in July.
See the press release at Life on Mars DVD news: Announcement for Life on Mars - Series 1 | TVShowsOnDVD.com

As far as Better Off Ted, I thought it was an amusing half hour and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Re: Life on Mars (US) season 1

Thanks for that information Neil. I guess I'll be able to assemble my own Life on Mars "International" set. I'm looking forward to the British version.

Can't agree with you on Better Off Ted, though. It completely missed the mark in my opinion. But that's why we have channel selectors and on/off controls, right? Enjoy!

Re: Life on Mars (US) season 1

Any particular reason this show isn't coming back?

I can't imagine it's a ratings issue. Phenomenal actors, great story lines.. I'll be sad to see it go.

I'd imagine that has a large part to do with it. I can't imagine Harvey Keitel comes along cheap, and maybe not Gretchen Mol either.

It looks like they will at least explain what's really going on in the series finale.

Is the British version done, too, or are they still making new episodes?

From what I understand, the British one was two 'series' and done. Not canceled, but that's just how many episodes they wanted to make.

Though they made a sequel that takes place in the 80s - Ashes to Ashes. They've already had one series and the second will be airing in the Uk soon. The first season of Ashes is currently airing on BBC America and the second one is supposed to follow not long after it airs in the UK.

Re: Life on Mars (US) season 1

I was a little confused, I was interrupted briefly right before the commercial break that returns and we see Sam in jail. I guess the FBI guy had something on him.

The confusion was more to do with Ray. I had the impression he and Chris were dead from the gun shots. But it looks like he had more of a flesh wound. Was this explained, I kept wondering if this was part of the imaginary world Sam was living in and things are not as they appeared. Like Sam's hippie neighbor girl.

On the roof top, I really was totally going either way, was the FBI guy really speaking to him or did he just read Sam's writings and look at his records to say those things to him. But then Annie was on top of it and was able to get through to him before he jumped.

edit: when I got interrupted, I thought I heard a reference to Police Woman and Angie Dickinson. I'll rewatch this on Hulu to confirm, but if this is 1973, then the Police Woman TV series wasn't on till 1974. but then I gathered there has been a few little inaccuracies for artisitc reasons and this one is minor to probably make a point.

For the second point, yes you heard right, the FBI agent was mentioning it at some point.

As for the first, I agree. My first thought was at point blank range, a gangster like that isn't going to miss and give them just a flesh wound.
