William, that's Universal's nice way of saying "it's going in a folder and won't ever be read, but if we get enough letters in a folder, then we'll address it."

Re: Vertigo: Universal Legacy Series -- no mono track

Hello everyone.

This is my first post and being from switzerland, I already apologize for my english.

Here's the thing as all of you, I'm a huge fan of Vertigo but I still don't have a proper dvd edition about this film.

As you may know unfortunately the R2 dvds are often not as take care of as R1.

I have a R2 edition dated from 2006 which can be found in a 24 dvds box from studio canal but which is actually the same edition as the 2000 or 2001 edition.

So the image quality isn't extraordinary and the REAL PROBLEM: no mono track of course.

My question is then which edition would you recommend?

The thing is this is one of my favorite movie and I want the best edition.

After going through a lot of review and forum it appears that the ultimate edition if you want the original mono track is the masterpiece collection right?

The problem is that I dont think I will soon get a blu-ray player so my second question is do you think that there will be an other dvd edition or that the next release is definitely a blu-ray one?

What bother me is that many edition of others dvd I have of Hitchcock films are good enough and for one or two specific like Psycho for example I'd rather prefer to buy the legacy edition.

Then I would be sure that if I go for the Masterpiece collection, It won't be soon a new dvd edition as good or even better than the legacy one but with
the original track and the color gaffe settled.

What do you think? I'm waiting for your advice.

Re: Vertigo: Universal Legacy Series -- no mono track

I would suggest the Masterpiece Collection.
There was hope that along with the SE dvds, Blu-Rays of the same films would be released. Unfortunately that wasn't the case, so there's no information on the titles. Not even rumors or anything.
The dvd is watchable, of course. But as I understand it there has to be done additional work for Vertigo (and probably Rear Window as well) to have a decent Blu-Ray release. So it might take a while.
And apart from having the original mono track on Vertigo, the Masterpiece Collection is a great looking set with many Hitchcock classics. Must-buy if you ask me.

Re: Vertigo: Universal Legacy Series -- no mono track

Thanks for your answer.

The masterpiece edition looks interesting but what I want to avoid is to buy the Masterpiece collection if in a few months or even some weeks they re-release it on dvd.

Again I don't have and (for the moment) don't want to buy a blu-ray player so what interest me is a dvd edition and not the future blu-ray one.

So what I want to know is if anyone have any information or knows where to find out information on a possible new dvd edition or a re-release of the legacy edition with the color gaffe fixed and the mono track include.

For the legacy edition they apparently planned to release the birds as well, it was announced but finally never came up.

I wonder if it's not possible that in a near future they finally release the legacy edition of the birds and along with it re-release Vertigo with problems settled.

So all I ask is if I can go for sure with the masterpiece collection without risking to see soon a re-release or a new dvd edition of Vertigo.

What do you think?

I think that they won't be fixing the Legacy version at all, and it will be some years before you see Vertigo released on SD again. Frankly, the only chance SD might have of seeing a final corrected release is if the BR comes out. In other words, get the Masterpiece version because it will likely be a long wait.

I doubt it that they will re-release it again, with the mistakes corrected. And if they will, it will probably take a few years, and that will be when the Blu-Ray's arrive.
The things you can choose from are the following: the Masterpiece Collection, which has the original mono track and a lot of Alfred Hitchcock's other films, and the Legacy collection, which drops the mono but adds additional extras not found on the earlier release.

Re: Vertigo: Universal Legacy Series -- no mono track

Thanks for your answers.

You convinced me.

I found a seller on amazon who proposed just the dvd with Psycho, The Trouble With Harry, The Man Who Knew Too Much and Vertigo so I didn't have to bought the whole box set.

I ordered it.
