Seinfeld in HD...at least for U.S. viewers

Seinfeld goes HD on TBS HD - Engadget HD

So anyone here with TBS HD can see the show in full HD, with an expanded and slightly cropped frame, recomposited titles, and isn't upconverted.

Interesting, but non-Americans obviously don't get to see it.

looking at it right now "the fatigues"

cropping looks extremely tight.

everything is scraping the edges of the screen.

shots of "Monk's/Munk's" cut off the top of the red neon sign.

No sir, I don't like it.

I've only seen a couple of episodes and the cropping was tight but I didn't bother me THAT much. For better or worse, I think the 'widescreen' version of Seinfeld is the only way that you're going to see the show in the future.

I know a lot of people predicted the "crop and drop", but it is surprising that it is being used on a sitcom like Seinfeld.  I want the full height of Kramer's hair!!!

I meant to ask about this as I was watching an HD Broadcast the other day. It looked like there was definately more room on the sides as the titles now seemed in the middle of the frame somewhat instead of on the left which is where it would appear to be in 4:3. I didn't notice any obvious cropping at the top or bottom of the frame. I can't really find much in terms of filming specs on IMDB, but a lot of television show shoot in 3-Perf Super 35 which would yield a native 1.78.1 ratio.

There has been discussion about this on other boards since it started to air this way about a year ago.

There is more info on the sides and less on top and bottom, and it as apparently shot for widescreen future proof in mind.

Looking at that link, the comparison of the two pictures is interesting.  They cut off below the knees where the 4x3 showed their feet.  Definitely a chop job there.

I think there was just more info on the film frame that they decided to use, it looks way too cramped to me.
