Please... another release of The Saragossa Manuscript

It's a really monumental film and it took me years to finally find it. Apparently it was a minor miracle it made it to disc in the first place... but it's now OOP and at $40+ for a used bare-bones disc, far exceeds by budget. This title is just one classy Region 1 release away from proper recognition.

If this were to become a Criterion Blu-Ray title I'd be in heaven.

I broke down and paid the eBay piper. It really irks me, too, because when it came out I thought, "I bet this doesn't stay in print long." But I never pulled the trigger. Who knows when or if it'll come again, so I just went ahead.

This title is available in Region 2 UK, (same transfer as region 1, but minus the booklet insert), so if you have a multi-region player you can pick it up for under $20.

The R1 and UK R2 transfers are vertically stretched from the full 2.35:1 ratio to a 1.78:1 ratio. In addition to the R1 edition, I have the French R2 which is the true 2.35:1 but is a wee bit less detailed than the other transfer. I have heard a rumour that a new R1 edition is in the works - could be a Criterion seeing as they have a license deal with Image Ent., but who knows? It's a magnificent film, one of my firm favourites and I own a copy of the novel, which is an extraordinary work of intricate, fantastic fiction by one of the great figures of Old Europe.
