Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Dear Mr. De Lauzirika,

I am right now watching the workprint from the Blade Runner 5 disc edition again, and I just wanted to spontaneously thank you for this truly great DVD set, which is probably the very best set ever produced for a single movie.

Blade Runner is a perfect example of giving the fans exactly what they want. It's an example how to maintain artistic integrity, but simultaneously acknowledging that there are fans out there who fell in love with something which the artist did not intend to create in the first place. I really hope the set sold well, and that Ridley will, once again, make another science fiction movie.

It's amazing how the beaten up workprint looks a LOT better than the transfer of the very first DVD issue.

Thank you for the very kind words, Oliver. I'm sure everyone on the team truly appreciates it. And I'm glad you're still enjoying the set after all this time!

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Yesterday I rewatched the Dangerous Days documentary again.

Never feels like the running time is 3+ hours.

Awesome documentary, possibly best I have seen so far

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Every time I watch Dangerous Days and come to the iconic end shot with Deckard on his balcony with that beautiful Vangelis score I always get so emotional and a smile crosses my face. Finally Blade Runner received exceptional treatment on Home Video and it's finally got the recognition it truly deserves. Thank you Charlie and all those involved in quite possibly one of the best film presentations ever.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Thanks again, guys. It really means a lot. I began this whole project thinking it was going to be the biggest, baddest nightmare ever and it turned out to be a wonderful dream come true.

I hadn't watched Dangerous Days for several months but based on your comments, I popped it in last night to sample it a bit. Wow, I see about a million things I'd do differently now that I'm not the sleep-deprived basket case I was during final delivery in August, 2007. Maybe I'll get a chance to do Dangerous Days: The Final Cut one day.

And the end product more than reflects that.

You mean there are still things left people wouldn't believe?

I laughed so hard when I heard Harrison's comments on the recording session tapes of the voice-over...

I'll buy Dangerous Days: The Final Cut only if you also release:

Dangerous Days: The Workprint

and

Dangerous Days: With The Ending From The Shining

Be sure to include Dangerous Days: Screen tests (including the lost Eric Stoltz footage)

+1 to all of the thanks already put in this thread. Even after Blu Ray has taken on a head of steam and has put out quite a few very reference quality Special Editions, Blade Runner continues to be my #1 rated, highest quality Blu Ray set. It's the one I demo to my friends to show them how HD can really bring the true movie experience, as well as the history behind the films, home.

You forgot "Dangerous Days: The William Shatner Cut" with the infamous "rockman" creature.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

After reading this thread, I am really eager for my Panasonic player to arrive later this month. I've always loved BR and when Amazon had it on sale for $15, I snatched it up. Soon, I'll get to watch it.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

What exactly would you do differently Charlie? I of course have no idea of all the material you had so I could never guess but to me it's perfect.

I've always wondered how you shape hundreds of hours of interviews into a coherent story? Where the hell do you begin?

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Charles,

There is a moment in Dangerous Days that has me a bit confused. Alan Ladd Jr. is talking about selling someone on investing in the production, (I think he is talking about Sir Run Run Shaw) but he doesn't say who he is talking about, and he actually repeats the sentence. Once it is his voice over some images and once it is a shot of him, but saying exactly the same thing back to back. I'm assuming this was an editing mistake that got past everyone?

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Yes, that moment with Alan Ladd, Jr. is definitely on my fix list. There are few other editorial mistakes here and there, mostly due to human error and an overall lack of time to polish and tweak in the final days.

I have a hazy memory of seeing my editors outputting final onlines and seeing them passed out in their chairs as they were supposed to be QCing their work. I can't say I blame them as we were all under an extraordinary amount of pressure to finish. And I'm actually surprised there aren't more mistakes than there are, considering how many hours of material were delivered.

As for what I would change, it would all be relatively minor. Smooth out some cuts, colortime some shots, improve some graphics...a lot of nitpicky perfectionistic stuff that 99.9% of the folks out there would never notice or appreciate. Not a huge deal. I'm fairly satisfied with the final result.

I know exactly what you mean. But honestly the Alan Ladd Jr. bit was the only thing that really jumped out at me.

That's the thing about being a filmmaker. The audience looks at the final product and just thinks, "that's great", the filmmaker looks at it and sees what was in his head. Often the final product doesn't live up.

Any chance we'll get to see DANGEROUS DAYS and the deleted scenes in High-Definition? Maybe an HD release would allow you the chance to do those little tweaks you're talking about here

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

The 5-disc set was such a bargain, I'd definitely be willing to pay for a separate BD of the supplements (including Paul's doc from disc 5) in High-Def. I'd just stick it in my 5-disc case in place of one of the two standard DVDs.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Now that you are a year in, any thoughts on using the same extras DVD for DVD and Blu-Ray releases? It made sense when you were designing for 3 disc platforms, but would you consider it still good option for cost effectiveness? Considering that galleries, processed deleted scenes, and well-shot non-puff docs are only worthy of HD treatment.

I'm curious because I just purchased a Blu-Ray with a 2nd BD just contained a doc in MPEG2 480i. No bigger than a DVD. Thought it was weird, but I'm sure it's just to appease the hardcore BD fans.

Thanks.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

I consider this set the best value of any Blu-ray purchase I have made and I wasn't a big fan of the movie before buying it. I like the movie better and the value here is just outstanding and I hope Warner finds a way to offer some other classic films with a similar treatment. Since I don't have a clue how any profits are made by offering a package like this at this price, I might be asking for a bit much.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

I'd really like to thank you, Mr. de Lauzirika, for this great collection.
I'd never seen Blade Runner before, and decided to go for the 5-disc Collector's Edition because it was so cheap.
I absolutely loved the film. I got pretty high expectations, and they were met completely. Every actor fit the role perfectly, with Rutger Hauer at the top (but that's probably the nationalistic side in me). The special effects were gorgeous as well. I really had the feeling I'd seen it all before, but it has been a highly influential film, so that's no surprise. Picture and sound quality on the Final Cut are amazing. Other versions looked great too.
And then the supplements. 'Dangerous Days' may be the first documentary that had exactly the right length. I always wanted more when I watched other docs, but this one's so exhaustive that that doesn't happen. Every other featurette and audio commentary (although Hampton Fancher and David Peoples came off more as the Odd Couple) revealed new information as well. Minimal amount of overlapping, and that's great.
I just watched this behemoth in four days, so I won't be watching Blade Runner for a while. But it's a fantastic box set, that's on par with the LOTR Extended Editions (and those are the top releases for me). Many thanks.

By the way, I really had to laugh when Frank Darabont commented on the voice over when Roy Batty died. His comment was hilarious. And did he come up with the idea of using 'If I Didn't Care' by the Ink Spots for The Shawshank Redemption from the trailer of Blade Runner? He's oviously a big fan of the film, and I don't think it would be coincidental.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Thanks Charlie for the superb 5-Disc release! I received the Limited Edition Deckard Briefcase (DVD) a couple XMAS' ago. I bought myself the HDDVD as a personal birthday present the following few months back then. I use the HDDVD to view the discs. Holy crap you outdid yourself! I rewatched alot of the various documentaries and the various cuts again awhile ago and still astounded. Before I'd have only seen the 1992 "Director's Notes" Cut and none of the others.
One of my most favourite films and yet there's one minor nitpick. How come there wasn't a sixth disc which delved into the 1997 Westwood PC game? It ran parallel (same timeframe and you get to see Deckard in the background in an image you use on the ESPer machine) to the film and I've played it several times. Also had multiple endings of which I'm still attempting to attain. Well, and other Blade Runner merchandise?
Why am I nitpicking? It's one of the best put together editions out there.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

I just watched the Final Cut (I've had it since it was released, but was saving it for an occasion) and I just want to say how impressed I was by the sound quality. I was expecting the image would be what impressed me most, but instead, it was the clarity of the dialogue. And not just clarity, but, there was no noticeable moments when you could detect noise gates or noise reduction moving. I have no doubt this was a challenge. But it worked.

Of course everyone in the room was upset that "I want more life, fucker!" had been replaced, since they were all saying it out loud along with Roy, but, that was *the* *only* "awwww!" moment. Other replacements went by perfectly naturally ("two got fried...") and I resisted the urge to nerd-out and comment about the changes.

Were those two seperate takes of the line? I thought Rutger Hauer was instructed to say an amalgamation of both, so it could be either way.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Dear Mr. deLauzirika,
First and foremost, my most sincere thanks to you and the restoration team of Blade Runner 5 disc edition BluRay. I work in an industry where the consumers expect highest quality with little/no thanks. I wanted you to know from this film fan, your time & work with BR is truly appreciated.

Since purchased in January 2008, I have been watching the Final Cut (personal favorite version) about every other month. Work, family, other hobbies and >400+ other movies prevent more frequent viewing.

My 11 year old son has (voluntarily too ) watched the Final Cut with me twice (except have to fast forward past the Joanna Cassidy flesh flash image). Hopefully I can groom him to his father's love of film.

I agree with all of the fan sentiments in this thread. Also Peter Bracke's review on high-def digest summarizes better than I can.

One question sir: given the usual economic push and in the current historic recession, is WB studio happy with the sales? I ask as I am afraid future restorations onto Blu Ray will not get the green light due to the financial perspective. (I.e. studio head(s) will say "well only the fan-boys/girls buy it.")

Thank you again,
Michael

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Thanks for the very kind words, Mike. It's my understanding that Warner Home Video was very pleased with the sales. I do wonder though if the "Blade Runner" Final Cut restoration and special edition project had been greenlit in today's economic environment versus three years ago, would it have been as elaborate a release as it was? Knowing that many of the folks at WHV are true film fans who put a lot of love and hard work into these titles, I'd like to think it would.

Re: Blade Runner 5 Disc: Thank you again!

Charles, I just noticed this question and answer at Sideshow Collectibles, and thought of you:
Quote:
Q: I’m an avid Premium Format collector and was wondering if you have considered or tried obtaining the ‘Blade Runner’ license? Nothing would give me more pleasure than to own Premium Format versions of Deckard, Gaff, Rachael, Roy, Pris, Leon & Zhora. Please make this happen!

A: Blade Runner remains a ‘Grail’ property for Sideshow. It is a very complicated licensing scenario, as is the case with many older films, and one that we will continue to chip away at. If you happen to know anyone connected to the Blade Runner film rights, we’d be very interested to meet them!

That's from
Sideshow Collectibles ‘Ask Sideshow’ Answers - 4/8/09

I know you have the not-quite-kosher "Android Hunter" figure, so I figure you might be familiar with Sideshow Collectibles, Inc. (which only makes licensed figures). Sounds like they could use your help!
