To be fair, the digital copies are included on their own disc, and even if they weren't they're only a few hundred megs in size, a fraction of what a Bluray disc is capable of holding.

I was referring to the S-DVD, not the Blu-Ray. But, now that I look at the ad again, it doesn't say the digital copy is included on the S-DVD release so perhaps my snarky comment doesn't apply to this particular title.

The digital copies I've loaded onto my laptop, however, were 1-2 GB in file size and, though I've saved them to my laptop as a novelty, I've never watched them and I still find digital copies to be rather pointless. What self-respecting movie fan wants to watch a film on a screen that small? Take it away, David Lynch:

It seems people complaining about the extras are glazing over the biggest feature of them all. This is WB's first BD-Live enabled Blu-ray. This means more than likely we could see more special features on The Dark Knight via BD-Live in the future. Just to let everyone in on what BD-Live is capable of this is what Paramount recently announced for the Transformers Blu-ray...

First Transformers BD-Live Material Revealed

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed that they will release its first BD-Live feature - a video called "Robot Ninjas' - for the 'Transformers' Blu-ray on September 30th. The video will focus entirely on the battle between Bumblebee and Barricade, showcasing home videos and animatics gathered from the film's stunt crew.

The second BD-Live feature, called "What Effing Happened in Mission City", is coming soon. It is also expected that Paramount will use the BD-Live features on 'Transformers' to promote the sequel, which is filming now.

Great, so instead of putting quality HD material on the HD discs, we might get to stream some internet gimmicks later on. BD-Live as an enhancement is fine, take your time studios, and figure out what to do with it. BD-Live as a replacement for quality supplementals is pathetic.

WB wants Blu-ray to grow and this holiday season is the best chance especially with The Dark Knight. It seems they are going to go the route of trying to get people to switch over by having exclusive extras for the Blu-ray via BD-Live in the future.

Well, I'm probably in the minority here, but I m not excited about the changing aspect ratios. I have always used black mattes to block out the bars on stuff that was wider than 1.85:1. I have found this practice really make the picture "pop" and creates a much more imersive experience in my HT.

Doesn't look like I'll be able to use the mattes with this film.

I've also had problems using the mattes when subtitles appear below the 2.35:1 frame.

At this point I am not sure I will be to crazy about the aspect ratio changing. I will however have to wait and see after I have viewed the blu-ray edition. I think it would have been better if they would have just offered the IMAX framed version of the movie through out the entire movie. I however would not be surprised if Batman: Dark Knight ends up being one of my favorite movies, changing aspect ratio or not.

Did you all read what Bill Hunt from DVD Digital Bits had posted?
The Blu-Ray picture will constantly change from a 2,40:1 frame to a 1,78:1 frame.
It will be a mixture.
On the contrary, the DVD will be constantly in a 2,40:1 frame.

They can't offer IMAX framed version all the way through because he only shot a few select scenes in IMAX. When I saw it in IMAX I'd say less than 10% of the movie is in IMAX.

That said, my friend hardly noticed the switching at all, and I did but wasn't bothered by it or taken out of the movie by it. Of course this was on an IMAX screen of epic size, so perhaps my tune will change on my 60" TV. That said, the change in aspect ratio won't be as huge. Instead of going from 1.44 to 2.35 and back, it will be 1.78 to 2.35. I did notice a lot of dead space in the top and bottom of the IMAX frames, so perhaps trimming a bit of top and bottom information from those scenes might actually help the presentation (in comparison of course to the IMAX presentation, not the consistent 2.35 presentation).

Not a deal breaker for me, but choice is always good and I wish they'd given us the choice.

I remember you mentioning having mattes and the difficulties with the non-anamorphic Star Wars trilogy.

While I can certainly understand why some people won't like it - be it screen configuration or personal preference, it is the director's intended presentation - something we can all agree is what is best for the films we enjoy.

I welcome the shifting AR, because I truly enjoyed the IMAX version and want to recapture that - albeit in MUCH smaller form - on Blu-ray. Considering the TDK prologue and how well it translated to 1.78:1, this will be a very nice visual treat.

Yeah Nicholas, every once in awhile something pops up that screws with my matte system! As for the director's vision... I just want the one I saw in a non-IMAX theater. Still, not a deal breaker for me either, but I wish I could get both versions in Blu.

Thanks. It was always something I found interesting, because it would recreate a theatrical experience more realistically because the in-film borders wouldn't be seen. Unless you've got a pitch-black room and a Pioneer Elite, the borders are always noticeably visible because they don't blend in completely.

Seamless branching should have been the way to go - the added capacity of the disc would have meant no issues with compression at all. The DVD version could also do this, but space does become an issue there when the film is as long as it is.

I do watch in a completely dark room! Probably the reason I can see the bars! I am curious as to whether one of those Pioneer Kuro sets would make the mattes obsolete!

I have just been reading up on some HTs that have a fixed height screen and remote mattes that widen and close to the proper ratio (like a real theater). The lens on the projector has an animorphic lens that swings over the regular lens. I imagine this Blu-ray would be a nightmare for those folks. Granted, there's probably only about 20 of them in the country!

Oh, and I completely agree on the cover art! The single DVD version is much better!

I saw the film originally in an IMAX theater and the AR switching at that time wasn't terribly noticable. I mean, I did notice each time it occurred, but it wasn't distracting. ON a smaller screen, though, I'm not so sure. I do agree that it should at least be an option. In the end though, it sure ain't gonna stop me from buying it.

Last year I spent 4 months (temporary position for training) as a high-end HT installer, and the vast majority of the sets I was dealing with were Elites (we never called them by their promotional name Kuro) and I can say with 100% certainty that the black levels were pitch perfect. Watching a 2.35:1 film on an Elite meant that the borders blended in seamlessly with the television's bezel, with no noticeable difference in the shade of black. They were THAT perfect. From standing right up almost touching the screen with my nose, to several feet away, I could not see where the bezel ended and the border began!

In other words, yes your mattes would be useless.
