*** Official 9th Annual HTF October Scary Movie Challenge

Thread Starter
Here's the thread for this year's Scary Movie Challenge. I basically copy and pasted last year's rules (which I believe were copy and pasted from the year before). If anyone has a problem with a rule, feel free to post it below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Watch 13 Scary/Horror/Halloween-Themed films before midnight on October 31, 2008 (use your own timezone to set the ending time).

2. Two of the above must be new discoveries, movies you've never seen before. The point of this is to see those few movies you've always meant to see, but never got around to. I recommend more than 2, but 2 is the minimum to pat yourself on the head and say you completed the challenge. Please specify new discoveries in your film list by making them bold, adding asterisks, different colors, etc.

3. Come here and talk about 'em.

4. There is an uber-category, the Ultimate Splatter Challenge for those who wish to put all of the rest of us to shame. This is the heavyweight division. These people, if they choose to accept the challenge, must view 31 horror/scary/Halloween themed movies before dawn on Nov. 1st. Ten new discoveries are recommended for this one. The rest of us will bow down in awed reverence to these truly "Splatterific" HTF members. The bragging rights will be awesome and long lived.

5. There has been discussion over the past two years as to what movies qualify. Is Silence of the Lambs a horror movie? Does The Nightmare Before Christmas count? From now on, if you wanna include it, go for it. There will be no hairsplitting. If The Wizard of Oz send you to the dresser for a fresh pair of boxer shorts, all the power.

re: *** Official 9th Annual HTF October Scary Movie Challenge

Ah - my favorite time of the year! Have loved participating in the challenge over the past few years but it looks like I'll have a bit of trouble this year. I'm only going for the 13 this time. I'm off to Paris on October 10th for a week so I'm going to lose some serious time this year. Oh well.

Everyone enjoy and I look forward to hearing all about your new findings! Every year I hear about a few flicks I never knew about. Always a couple gems in the bunch.

Cheers,

Jason

Re: *** Official 9th Annual HTF October Scary Movie Challenge

I may follow through or not, depending on a variety of things. For one thing, this year a lot of health problems have been plaguing me and draining me of my desire to watch much stuff (or do ANYTHING), and then there are always the Mets to focus on if they make it to October baseball (which is always unlikely).

I intend to watch episodes from the newly-released FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE SERIES television show through October, though I personally choose not to count them as part of the Challenge (I'll only count movies). Also, I hope to have a Munsters Marathon as well.

We'll see.

I'm in! Haven't been watching as many movies of late thanks to the gf taking up much of my time, but I'm sure I can ditch her long enough to watch at least 13 flicks. I picked up several 50 movie boxed sets so get set for lots of crap!

Re: *** Official 9th Annual HTF October Scary Movie Challenge

In regard to TV shows, I'm not going to count them in my list but I don't have a problem with someone else counting them. That being said, it would be a bitch have someone watch all the episodes of The Twilight Zone and then say that they're at 156 viewings.

I guess my two cents on TV shows is to use common sense- you can watch a few but don't have your list bogged down with them.

It's all for fun anyway so I'm not sweating it.

With TV series like Buffy The Vampire and those, I was going to have that 2 episodes watched counts as one entry (60 minute eps, 4 30minute eps), the idea being that, it is halloween based, and 2 eps are pretty much movie length. So many people watch TV series like that and don't count them, I think they should be able to, and this is mostly fair based on time invested.

What do you guys think?

People can, of course, do what they want... but here's my two cents on the matter:

This is (and always has been) set up to be a movie challenge (which, admittedly, also includes made-for-tv movies, like THE NIGHT STALKER, TRILOGY OF TERROR and THE NORLISS TAPES). If you have a bunch of hour or half-hour series episodes lined up (I know I have some, like the HAMMER HOUSE OF HORROR set I just got, as well as stuff like THE INVADERS: Season 1), why not set up a separate '2008 SCARY TV CHALLENGE' on the "SD DVD TV Shows & TV Movies" board?

In the past I think myself and others have occasionally asked, "Why are you including this?", but that takes away from the fun. Besides, it doesn't affect me one way or the other what other fans prefer to do, because I'm only keeping score for myself and NEVER expect to come even close to the top of the "most watched films" list in any given year!

My two and a half cents is that I generally agree that this has traditionally been a movie challenge, and so for myself I am electing not to count my watched TV episodes, but that's my own thing. But at the same time I will likely be watching and listing TV eps here at the bottom of my main movie list anyway (the movies I am numbering for the challenge; the TV shows I am not counting). The reason I do that is because I don't want to be running around to the TV section, which is likely to get lost in the shuffle in the future. And I just like to have all of my Halloween viewings every year all conveniently included together right here in these annual threads.

Re: *** Official 9th Annual HTF October Scary Movie Challenge

I definitely won't be in the splatterheard category this year, but I'll see if I can get to 13. I have plenty of 50 and 100 movie sets, so I can dig up some good crap, along with Steve.

RE: TV episodes. I also always saw this as what it is called, a movie challenge. I always find it curious that when people complain about something, the response is, "this is for fun". Well, when people are upset about what someone is doing (or just passively commenting) then you are spoiling the fun. There is also a competition and a "Winner". So, my $0.02 is that we should be purists and just do movies.

(1) The Living Dead Girl /
There's something special about the love of a woman and her undead girlfriend. I expected a lot more salacious goodness from Jean Rollin, especially considering the subject matter.

(2) The Amazing Transparent Man (1960) /
Lame, dull flick about some power obsessed dude "recruiting" a safe cracker to aid in establishing his invisible army. Snooze!

(3) Doomsday (2008) /
This is what I call a "Kitchen Sink" movie, and I'm giving it 4 stars just for the sheer balls of it. I'm pretty sure there is nothing ever conceived which isn't in it and by the end I was basically sitting laughing about it all.

(4) The Ruins (2007) /
Strange little flick about a group of tourists who seek out a "lost" Aztec ruin, with unpleasant results. For some reason, I'm reminded of Tim Roth in Reservoir Dogs. Unfortunately, at less than 90 minutes, it still manages to drag at times.

It's a rather dubious win though. IT is for fun, Travis and I got close to each other last year, but I don't think any of us where all "Just one more movie... Must win!!" For me, I get so obsessed I pretty much ruin my life as I cut everything out for horror films and just want the bloody thing to end. The "Prize" for winning is taking responsibility for the next years challenge since the beloved originator left the site, and Travis did a great job stepping up!

My idea for including the TV is purely so that the hours watching scary content is counted, and I really enjoy reading peoples comments on movies, I'd hate to miss out hearing about TV shows, and things like "MASTERS OF HORROR" have always been included anyways, so why not open it up to tv programs like "Buffy The Vampire slayer"? My idea for the serial episodes was an attempt to negate the "but they can watch 30 minutes episodes and get a better tally!" thing that usually arises, as demonstrated with the many knotted panties over 13 minute theatrical silent movies being counted.

As always, it really is about the fun, and more importantly community. I plan to watch a ton of HAMMER and Italian horror after hearing so much about them both in past challenges. Can't wait for this to start, who knows what they plan to watch first?

Well, because it's a Movie Challenge. But that doesn't mean we can't still watch TV episodes too, which I plan to do myself. Maybe I will offer up short summaries and opinions of the episodes, but I just don't feel like counting them among a Movie Challenge. I guess some might consider it wasted time if they didn't count TV shows, but I just like having a yearly log of what "Halloween Stuff" I'm watching each October, whatever the count. Besides, I have only managed 40 to 60 movies in the past at best; others are able to do over 100!

It's never an exact science, because some of us like to watch older films which are often anywhere from 60 to 80 minutes in length!

Well this may surprise many who know me, but one thing I hope to NOT do this year is watch many Universal Classics. I do that every year and there was a time when I was waiting all year to devote the 31 days of October to "31 Days of Universals". I'm sure I'll watch some of them, but not 30. I hope to try different things.

I'm waiting for that FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE SERIES set to arrive in the mail any day now. I haven't seen this TV show in 20 years and thought it was very good back then (and it's got nothing to do with the F13 Jason movies, for those who don't know). I think I'm going to try and make THE MUNSTERS an annual event from now on, watching all 70 episodes every October from now on (don't ask me how!) .

And the Mets are hanging on (great victory last night ) so maybe I'll be watching baseball this October. Either way, it's a win-win situation!

"Who are they?"

"Just lost drunken men who don't know where they are and no longer care."

"And these?"

"These are lost drunken men who don't know where they are, but do care! And these are men who know where they are and care, but don't drink."

"I don't know who I am."

"Do you care?"

"No"

"Guards, put this man in cell #1 and give him a drink."

"What do you drink?"

"I don't care."

Placeholder. We'll see how it goes. I'm extremely busy with writing projects these days.

Travis,

This really is a wonderful idea, and it looks like a lot of fun. Do we wait until October, or may we begin in September? I didn't see that anywhere, but I may have missed it.

Joe,

Yeah, this makes sense. I plan to list them (television episodes), but it's up to those who make the rules whether to count them or not. I do like the idea of watching new films I've never seen before in this genre. I'm thinking of borrowing Radioman's entire collection for the month.

This sounds fair to me. I will probably watch five or six television episodes ('standards' at Halloween time in our household); however, I will make an effort to watch many horror films as well.

O/T--

Joe,

Did you watch the 1969 World Series as it happened? I did, and although it didn't go seven games, I count it among the very best World Series I have ever seen. So many great memories. (Maybe we can discuss sometime. I am a Red Sox fan since 1967, but I also root for other teams to do well. )

I hear Tom Seaver, Gary Gentry, Nolan Ryan (who?), Tommy Agee, Ron Swoboda, and Cleon Jones are playing in the next few games.

And Don Clendenon will be there as well.

I was 7 in 1969 and not into sports. I'm still not into sports except for Mets baseball... I didn't really become a Mets fan until around 1976, when the Mets were at their nadir. So I'm accustomed to their antics!

As for the Red Sox, I'm more or less a "fan" because I hate the Yankees! I almost had an orgasm when Boston came back to slay them in 2004

(Oh, and the movie watching kicks off October 1st).

Re: *** Official 9th Annual HTF October Scary Movie Challenge

I was going to try a do 1 horror movie a day in October already, so what the hell.

I'm far from a horror aficionado, so I'll have the pleasure of viewing a lot of horror staples for the first time. Everything is a first time viewing unless noted otherwise.

Oct. 1
The Brides of Dracula, 1960; 50%
The opening cinematography around the lake is fantastic and spooky as hell. The rest of the film is great to look at as well, but has the colorful stage lighting of the time that shelters it from reality. Marianne wasn't much of an actress. Andree Melly looks like my Mom.

The Horror of Dracula, 1958; 60%
The story here was a step up from 'Brides, though that seems fitting given it's source material. Still, it deviated more than I had expected, something I wouldn't have minded had it not felt so Draculaless.

Photography here is even better than 'Brides, and I find it cool that having seen barely a frame of these Hammer films before, their look matches so closely to the ideal “horror” aesthetic I hold in my mind.

Dracula has amazing hand writing. Unbelievably good hand writing.

As for the Red Sox, I'm more or less a "fan" because I hate the Yankees! I almost had an orgasm when Boston came back to slay them in 2004

(Oh, and the movie watching kicks off October 1st).
Joe,

I was eleven. I remember it rather well. And I also remember 1986 even more.

When they won it in 2004 (and in particular, how they won it), my father, who grew up admiring Ted Williams, cried. He also told me that if the Red Sox never won another game so long as he lived, it would be okay.

October 1st it is. Thanks!

Apologies in advance for taking the thread off topic.

Re: *** Official 9th Annual HTF October Scary Movie Challenge

I've been anticipating this for months! The last two years' challenges didn't go so well for me; both of them I got burned out early on and lost interest in completing the challenge. I'm going to pace myself better this year, and write out a rough schedule for the month.

Looking forward to the discussion!

Rough schedule - this is more for me so I can have a handy place to keep track of things :p

Hammer Horror Collection (Universal)
Nightmare on Elm Street Collection

Halloween 4/5, 3, 6-8
Suspiria
Evil Dead 1, 2, AoD
Jeepers Creepers 1, 2
Shaun of the Dead
Ghostbusters 1, 2
