About the DTS thing, I think American Beauty and The Rock: Criterion Collection default to DTS and you have to change them to Dolby Digital in the sound options menu.

I don't see how that could be the case. DD is a mandatory sound format required by the DVD spec. DTS is an optional format, not even supported by many AVRs when DVD was introduced in 1997. And DTS tracks aren't automatically downmixed to 2-channel matrixed sound for use with the analog outputs by the player, the way DD tracks are. You can't default to a soundtrack that won't produce any sound at all on a system that doesn't do digiital sound or can't process DTS.

My copy of The Rock is out on loan, and I don't own American Beauty so I can't check the discs to verify, but given the specs and the realities of the marketplace, I'm confident that no discs default to DTS, and maintain that the DTS references in the episode still don't make any sense because many DVDs lack DTS tracks - how do you "default" to a track that isn't there?

Loved the pictures, though. And I agree, the Penny Blossom was great. I love it when shows are smart enough not to just drop things that were plot points in one episode when they move on to the next.

Joe

Yummy pics, Zachary!

You guys realize how funny it is to see you arguing about DD and DTS considering the show lol?

[Sheldon]I don't see anything humorous at all in this exchange. Television writers working on a show about so-called geeks should be able to get at least the basic facts right. And you'd think that being in the entertainment industry they'd already know the differrence between Dolby Digital, DTS and their variarous permuations. Of course, these are the same people who talk about "rocket science" as though it were an actual science and not just a branch of engineering used by real scientists to get their instruments into space. So I'm probably expecting too much.[/Sheldon]

LOL, I actually heard Sheldon's voice while reading that.

Thanks for the chuckle.

I agree that DTS was not part of the original DVD spec, but I think it is certainly a viable DVD audio format that did have its (albeit brief) moment in the sun. It's been quite a while, but off the top of my head, I can think of a few DVD's in my library that default to DTS. Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park and The Lost World come to mind and I'm sure I have others. Perhaps not completely germane to this discussion, but many current Blu-ray discs default to DTS-HD audio. So, DTS has not gone away. If anything, it has become more prominent in the world of Blu-ray.

Your not Jim Parsons, are you?

With the advent of lossless audio on BD I would imagine that whatever gap there was between DD and DTS has officially been closed and they would both sound pretty much identical now?

Sadly I haven't upgraded to Dolby TrueHD and DTS MA yet (plan to in June for my B-day) so I haven't had the pleasure of comparing.

Re: Big Bang Theory - season 2

OK, forgive my fading memory of the old days. When you had to buy a special disc to get a DTS track films often defaulted to DTS - because nobody who didn't have a DTS-capable system was going to buy a DTS disc. (Often paying slightly more for the privilege or giving up extras to get the DTS soundtrack.) However, discs that have both tracks on them do not default to DTS, for all of the reasons given above.

Still doesn't make the line in the show about defaulting to DTS any more sensible. Thanks for playing, though.

Because allowance has been made for downconverting all of the advanced digital audio formats on systems that can't handle their full abilities, which eliminates one of the main problems mentioned above.

Re: Big Bang Theory - season 2

Clearly the biggest error on this episode was the fact that the guys were setting up a bose 3-2-1 system, and didn't comment on how much bose sucks.

Re: Big Bang Theory - season 2

Ya know, I have to admit this as much as I may risk having my HT membership badge taken away.

I know how much flack Bose gets around here but I heard a demo of one of their systems in one of their dedicated HT rooms and it sounded damn good! It was overpriced as usual but I can't deny how it sounded.

Re: Big Bang Theory - season 2

Seriously, though, they played clips from salsa concerts and the flood sequence from Evan Almighty and it sounded rather incredible IMO.

The only problems I had with it was the price and when I asked the salesman if it could do Dolby TrueHD and DTS MA he looked at me like a deer in headlights so that answered that question lol.

Wouldn't buy it but it sounded great.

Okay now that's going too far.

I wouldn't watch foolscreen if I were captured by terrorists and they propped my eyelids open with toothpicks.

Look up my history, Hanson, i'm one of the biggest advocates of OAR this site has. Unflinching, unwavering and ready to take that pan n' scan and foolscreen shit out back and smoke it in the freakin' head at a moments notice.

Yeah. Like you'd tell that girl that the sound system she had spent way too much on sucked. You'd tell her it was just fine and you'd help her get the most out of it, just as you'd tell her that her cooking was great even if she served you lasagna that tasted like cardboard and library paste.

And, I have to admit, when I've heard some of the Bose demos (under ideal conditions) the systems sounded OK. Not worth the money they charge, not worth the lack of connections and compatibility with the rest of the industry, but not bad. Comparable to a number of entry-level HT systems. (At three or four times the price. )

Joe

A lot of their "demos" give you the allusion of sounding good...but in a real world situation, you'd probably be unhappy with the sound.

Another winner episode... and damn if Penny wasn't amazing in that little blue number. o_O

As for the Green Lantern thing... I thought the yellow vulnerability was revealed to be caused by Parallax being stored in the Central Power Battery on Oa... and when it was released...

(Insert shocked Penny-face)

And some give you the illusion of doing so. But, seriously, now does a demo create an "illusion" of good sound. It really sounds crappy in the demo, but they somehow fool you into thinking it sounds good? No. It does sound good in the demo. It may even sound good in your house - although you could have bought something that would have sounded better for the same money or less. Or it may sound crappy in your house. Just like any other sound system you listen to in a store. Again, I am hardly pimping for Bose, but I don't think arguments should be based on blind prejudice and the denial of reality.

Joe
