I said that when the original releases of the films on DVD came out, meaning those 1998/1999 DVDs - those were overpriced, while the later 2-disc versions were a great price.

You know what, I have no idea what you're asking. LOL.

I thought you were asking what we thought of the pricing for these new Blurays. I don't even remember what I payed for the DVD's.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I was asking if, based on the pricing history of the DVDs, where the originals and the TV series were overpriced but the 2-disc sets were not, does anyone think these Blu-ray versions are overpriced or reasonable?

So you got it right.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I wish they put all the special features on disc 6 or 7. Why have them on every disc. They never get as much play as the episodes. I would rather as many episodes on one disc as possible.

as for Horner, he's done a LOT of these DVD featurettes, so it's safe to say they talked to him personally about the film. He was part of a 'making of' for the film "Testament" (another Paramount release) and his segment in that was about a minute long, so the chances of him not being a part of this specific Trek feature is about zero. It'll be the first time he's talked about the film in about 20 years!

I hope he mentions his little cameo in it as an Enterprise engineering crewman.

The SE DVD of First Contact was released on March 15th, 2005. Goldsmith passed away on July 21st, 2004. (I had to look that up.)

I was hoping we'd get a tribute to Leonard Rosenman as well. Maybe the Library Computer feature will mention him. And I thought Horner was very candid in his Aliens interview.

And speaking of the FC tribute, most of the features on the TNG movie DVDs are letterboxed (a mix of 16x9 interviews and 4x3 behind the scenes footage, or vice-versa). When these films come out on BD later on, I wonder if these features will be full 16x9.

There are no real complaints from me, and I'm appreciative that they included almost all of the extras (text commentaries?) as I don't own all of the 2-discs. I have the TMP DE, so that covers what's missing from that DVD, for the time being.

Before we see "Generations" release on BD, maybe someone could clear this up for me... wasn't the 2-disc missing one of the trailers due to some sort of music rights issue?

And anyone have any idea when we might see "Enterprise"?

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Now they have posted the specs I can see why the pricing is so good. Apart from ST2 which quite rightly gets the masterpiece treatment the rest just get 1080P + 7.1 which is pretty generic nowadays. I doubt they have properly mastered the sound into 7.1 it will just be surrounds spread in all the rear channels as it would be costly remixing 6 movies for 7.1. The best news for me is that Nick Meyer has obviously played a big part in the ST2 transfer but apart from that all the other extras look pretty poor & cheapskate as expected and most I have already seen anyway. Most of those so called celebrity commentries will be a waste of disc space for sure! Very little if anything else is new so all we are really getting is hopefully decent transfers & passable sound. Paramount really missed a golden opportunity here to get Shatner/Nimoy the other surviving TOS actors & Harve Bennett (producer of 2-5) more involved.

With names like Ron Moore, Ira Behr, the Reeves-Stevens', the Okuda's, Manny Coto...I don't know how you discount the tracks. Sure, they're "fans" but they've all worked on the franchise in some way, shape or form. Most have been involved in some of the best Trek has to offer. The only original commentary missing is the one with Robert Wise from the DE of TMP, which, I assume, will be forthcoming on the DE edition.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

ANY comments from Ira Steven Behr and Ron Moore about anything related to Trek are more than welcome

Yeah I'm sure most fans will want to waste 12 hours of their lives listening to them gushing about movies they were never involved in. We should have had the remaining 5 TOS actors whilst they are still around.

According to the case (too lazy to actually pop it in ), it's missing both trailers. I know that one of them (the teaser, I think) reused music from earlier movies, so I don't think that it would be a problem. I don't remember the other, though.

And they'll have to edit the ones for TWOK and TUC. If we're lucky, there's enough blank space that it won't be too obvious. If we're unlucky, they'll end up like the James Cameron one from Terminator 2.

If someone had to complain about something it might as well be this, though if it wasn't it would be something else.

Perhaps most fans would like that. Perhaps not. Who knows.

Besides, those remaining actors have probably said every conceivable thing they could about Trek for most of their careers in various venues so a commentary is probably not something they would've cared to do or they would have by now.

When it comes to the films I'll be waiting to see what kind of options are available for all 11 at the end of the year.

In any case, great news all around!

Simple solution: don't listen to them.

I'll enjoy getting a new perspective on the flicks from people who-believe it or not-know more about the franchise than any of us.

Thanks for the links.

The teaser uses music from TMP and TNG's main titles.

The actual trailer... it's mostly Trek reuses (TNG's main titles and TUC), but I don't recognize parts (the first 30 seconds or so, and from 0:50-1:00--though it wouldn't surprise me if the latter is also TUC).

If it's clearance issues, it's either the TNG main titles (which would be odd) or those bits I don't recognize. Everything else is also used in the First Contact trailers.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

The only non-Trek music in that trailer is the music used in the beginning. It's "Neptune" from The Planets, by Gustav Holst.

No more deleted scenes though which I think is a bit stupid as you could see clips from them in the docs.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

From the Bits:

"The Star Trek VI Blu-ray and DVD from the Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection and Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy sets (due 5/12) will be presented at the original theatrical 2.35:1 aspect ratio, as newly approved by director Nicholas Meyer. The previous DVDs versions featured a 2.0:1 aspect ratio.

In addition, all of the Okuda text commentaries from the previous 2-disc DVDs of the feature films have been dropped from the Blu-rays. The reason is that the Okudas used the same material in the new Library Computer interactive options on the Blu-rays, so the text commentaries were redundant."

The Library Computer stuff sounds pretty cool. But I have to say, I've NEVER seen Star Trek VI in its original aspect ratio! I wonder what convinced Meyer to do that this time around. (Which also begs the question, if we get the extended version later on, what will that aspect ratio be?)

It's probably just because so many people asked for it when the DVDs were released. Fans didn't really complain until the special edition.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I think I'm gonna really dig this release.

While I'm disappointed that TMP doesn't also have the Director's edition, I'm still looking forward to having the theatrical cut in a definitive format.

And having Star Trek VI not only in its original theatrical cut, which has never been available on home video, but also OAR will be a real treat.

Excuse my ignorance. Which version was available on vhs?

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I never had the VHS version, but it's presumably the same as on the laserdisc which had the added Scooby Doo ending. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

It was the same. Just like the laserdisc, it was the "Special Home Video Version". And, it was all that was available.
