From Play.com UK releases.

That's very interesting, and decent prices, too, if true.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Since I'm not a fan of the Klingon edits on the DC I will buy the OC. I just think in this day & age the Blu-ray editions should be the ultimate final editions with all the bells & whistles, but the studio's don't seem to care so we are stuck buying both versions on different discs.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I am really amazed that some folks base their choice of favorite version of the movie on edits here and there of a few seconds and altering of sound FX and don't care that the far superior version as it relates to the characters is the DC.

Sulu reacting to Kirk taking command back, Uhura noting that their chances of living have doubled, Kirk noting McCoy's fear of the transporter, Spock weeping over Vejur not being able to find peace, Kirk's final self-destruct gambit to save earth----not as important as a couple of 3 second shots of the klingons???????

Well to each his own.

I'd been a fan since 1970,I saw the theatrical 7 times in the theater ,

I bought all the tie-in stuff and I KNEW it wasn't that great a movie--I just thought it maybe my last chance to see these old friends.

when I saw the SLV I knew it was now even slower and poorly paced, but I thought 'they cut out all the character stuff, why?'

And now because the DC which fixes most of those problems cut out a line here and a shot there the theatrical is now the holy grail?

Yes, preserve it for posterity by all means, but try to make it a classic when even trek fans in '79 knew it was deeply flawed?

oops sorry, I jumped into the debate.

Just hurry and release both versions and we'll all be happy.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Well, as others have said, I think there's room for all the versions of The Motion Picture. And we should have the chance to see them all. And if we can, great!

As for the DC being Wise's vision or the wet dream of the producers Fein et all. I suppose there's a element to that. But I don't think Wise was forced into anything. All those guys did was prove to Wise and the studio that it could be done. I personally believe Wise made the final choices of edits.

Each person has their own favorite version of the film and should have the right to enjoy it!

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I want both versions. I really want bother versions on one Blu-ray. But now I wish I didn't sell my DC DVD.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Yeah, as much as i prefer the DC---if the Theatrical comes out first----I'll rent it--just to re-live that experience one more time and for comparison reasons.....

As to what Nelson said about Wise......

I don't care whose choice it was to include the character bits in the DC---they belong.
The characters are the heart of the series and the real mistake was not including them the first time.....

I know, I know---------they had no time, better to leave in a 7 minute flyby than cut out 2 and have actual dialogue in it's place!!!

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Just thought of something else......

If Paramount isn't willing to do branching for Trek---how about something a lot cheaper and simpler---- Icons for the footage from the various versions.

A little icon 'DC' for footage only in the DC and 'Th' for footage only in the Theatrical etc.

Then folks could at least know for sure what was in what version without swapping out the separate discs.

A removable Icon of course !!

The movies---both box set and individual---are now up for pre-order at AmazonUK.

reasonable prices too !!

I hope that they are available individually here too, so i can pick up Trek 3, 4 & 5 now (assuming I'll have to wait on the other 3 for the director's cuts.)

These are the same deleted scenes ported over from the current DVD. Scenes from the longer version of the film (Spock crying, ordering the self-destruct) are not included here, as both scenes were included in The Director's Edition.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Strange that both Amazon & HMV only have ST2,3,4 & 6 for individual pre-order. No ST1 or ST5 to be seen!!

Then they have an item called series 1-6 for release a month earlier which could well be all 6 movies together with no 1 & 5 individually which would make sense as they are probably the lowest selling in the series. Pricing is also very good for once but as they look to be DVD content re-releases with hidef transfers thats understandable as Paramount have never spent much money on these movies for the home video market except for STMPDE ironically!!

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I DO like the added character moments in the DC. That's not my problem with it - it was other aspects.

I do think that the DC should be upgraded to HD and released too. And when they do, Fein and Dochterman need to rethink that whole bogus and incorrectly thought out "shooting-in-twos cell animation look" of the V'ger bridge walk scene (one of my biggest peaves). This was a major feature film, not some Saturday morning Scooby-Doo cartoon, and this sequence of animation would absolutely have been done one frame at a time.

I'm just glad that the theatrical version is being brought back.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Joel-

You'll have to articulate. What do you mean by the "shooting-in-twos cell animation look". What's you're peeve for? It looks like animation? It looks bad? I'll have to have another look at it.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

My mistake in the previous post on spelling "cell". It's actually "cel".

Anyway...

It's two frames of the same thing. A typical painted cel animation technique. It's that V'ger walk at the end that they do off the saucer of the Enterprise to see the actual V'ger complex. The whole scene was storyboarded with a bridge forming in front of them but never originally shot like that because of time, money, whatever. The DE guys recreated it with CGI but purposely double-framed it to make it look like traditional cel animation. In fact, they bragged about it at the time. It looks bad because of that - that stuttering look of the hexagons floating into that bridge formation.

While I appreciate the thought behind doing it, the idea of that "look" was totally ill-conceived.

First of all, this was a short scene, and even if it would take a while to do it, the original SFX people would have single-frame shot it to match the look of the rest of the film. Double-frame, or "shooting in twos" as it's sometimes called, was only for regular painted cel animation. And even with that, for important scenes, even Disney would shoot some animation sequences single-frame for a smoother look. Usually, only basic character motion is shot in twos.

I respect the man and all that (great filmmaker), but I´m afraid it´s too late for that. It´s not up to him anymore (meaning, that people have now seen all these different versions - and some actually prefer the original "Theatrical version").

It´s a bit like with the original ST-trilogy - there´s actually no "definitive version" anymore (from the "fan" point of view), even when Lucas says otherwise. For the many of the fans, the "definitive versions" are actually the original ones.

But yes, why not release BOTH of them in Blu-ray (and people can choose - or see both of them)? So I do understand that problem here obivously.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Pardon my cross posting in all the Star Trek threads, one new post in the SD TV Shows forum had a link to TVSHowsonDVD I missed for TOS on blu-ray. The article also has rumor/information about the TOS films. There will be a TOS set of the first 6 films called Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection and a trilogy set of Trek 2, 3 and 4 called Star Trek: The Motion Picture Trilogy.

Here in Canada, all the 2-disc Trek films are in Wal-mart bargain bins for $5 each, just like Stephen JH said. That's how I got all of them. I'm sure in the U.S. they can be found just as easily and cheaply.

New commentaries, new featurettes (the new Horner featurette on Trek 2...woo-hoo!) and all of it in HD with 7.1 surround sound!

I'm interested in seeing these theatrical versions of 1, 2, and 6, and 2 underwent a "Godfather" -type restoration!

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Except for the lack of extended versions for I, II, and VI, I have to say I'm impressed. And with the exception of TMP and the extended bits of II and VI commentary, it looks like they kept all the existing features as well. (I assume the text commentaries will be incorporated into the Library Computer BD feature.)

Random thoughts:

-I guess it's safe to assume there are no original negatives for the DE of II and the Special Home Video Version of VI? (hopefully we'll get these later along with a new TMP DE)

-They produced a Montalban tribute pretty fast (unless they were working on one already)!

-I wonder if they actually interviewed James Horner or a film/music historian instead (like Jeff Bond or Jon Burlingame). Just curious. I'm definitely interested in this piece!

-The Star Trek Summit piece sounds interesting. (And surprisingly long for a Trek bonus feature!)

-If I understand this correctly, the deleted scenes on the TMP disc are the same ones found on the DE DVD, but do NOT include anything that was actually added to the DE. Is this accurate?

-They got Meyer to sit down for a new commentary?! Cool. It'll be nice hearing from Ron Moore and the Okudas, too.

-Star Trek I.Q., eh? Bring it on!

And can I just say how happy I am to have created a thread that is now 15 pages long?! Mine never last more than one or two!

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Very happy to have final confirmation of S1 containing both the CGI and original versions. The SRP is also fairly reasonable after being gouged on the HD DVD set which I now need to put up on Ebay.

Also surprised at the SRP for the film set. $105 SRP, probably $70 after discounts for a 6 film set is pretty good, doubly so since this is Trek.

The only drawback to this set is the lack of multiple versions which should be standard practice with ALL releases. I'm still disappointed for a lack of a DC for TMP, not so much over II and VI which if there had to be only one version (which there doesn't) I'm glad the theatrical versions were it.

First Contact had a Jerry Goldsmith tribute and that wasn't too long after his death that the disc was made (I think)

as for Horner, he's done a LOT of these DVD featurettes, so it's safe to say they talked to him personally about the film. He was part of a 'making of' for the film "Testament" (another Paramount release) and his segment in that was about a minute long, so the chances of him not being a part of this specific Trek feature is about zero. It'll be the first time he's talked about the film in about 20 years!

I hope he mentions his little cameo in it as an Enterprise engineering crewman.

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I've found it very interesting that while the original near-bare-bones DVDs of the films were grossly overpriced as were the TV DVDs, the 2-disc collector's sets were very reasonable in comparison.

So, considering the price of this BD set, would you all say it's a good price or too much?

Re: Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Excellent news all around.

Nicholas, I don't see how anyone could claim these are overpriced. For the Movie Box Sets you're looking at what, $15 max per title in actual costs? Closer to $11 with a good deal. And the TOS set is half what the HD-DVD pricing was.

TOS I would say is a bit high, but acceptable (it'll end up cheaper per episode than Torchwood did, at any rate). And the movies are a very good price, if you don't mind the missing content from the DVDs.
