What's also cool about that Gary idea is that it would not HAVE to rely on extravagant display of FX to work. Gary Lockwood could have just donned those uncomfortable lenses again and most of the encounter could have been interesting dialog. Maybe it would turn out Gary was able to influence Sybok to do what he did to get Kirk to Gary's planet so Gary could remind Kirk that he had not forgotten their last encounter.

Resolving their encounter would be a little tricky though lol.

...... the same Connery who did: Meteor, Zardoz & Highlander2 but turned down LOTR (and many other big films) had good script radar!!!

Gary Mitchell was resurrected (sort of) in the infamous crossover comic where the Enterprise crew met the X-Men!

Pity he didn't pop up in the new movie.

It's too bad when folks just can't admit they're wrong.

You list a bunch of lame movies Connery did in the 70s and early 80s as proof.
So what?
Connery has turned down a lot of movies that he knew were quality projects (ever hear of the Bond franchise?) because he had other reasons for not wanting to do them---not because he can't pick a good script---which Trek 5 wasn't.

Late 80s, early 90s was the high point of Connery's post Bond career. If you really think he was desperately taking anything at that point you're just deluded.
I've been a trek fan since 1970 and i know trek has never been considered an 'a-list' franchise. Yes. it makes money and has millions of fans, but a lot of stars would avoid it like the plague. It's just the way it was. Connery would never have done Trek 5 in 1989 and they wouldn't have had the budget for him anyway.
Shatner desperately wanted Eric Von Lustbader to do the script. He asked for $1 million and Paramount flatly refused. (They hired David Loughery instead! Check his credits.) Connery would have wanted millions to do any movie at that point and they weren't going to pay it.
Do you really think Lawrence Luckinbill was the next actor on their list after Connery.
They hired him because he was cheap. (I do think he did a fine job with the weak script though.)

Now please go ahead pretending to yourself and others on this board that they were 'this close' to getting Connery for Trek 5. Delusions are so comforting.

Oh yeah, Connery had done Highlander #1 in 1986 and was on the hook for the sequel.

By the way Shatner's concept of trek 5 was that they think they are meeting "god' and he turns out to be satan in disguise----the actual satan--the real McCoy if you will. God's actual right hand man turned fallen angel.

Harve Bennett, Nimoy and the studio were aghast. They thought he was crazy.

So yeah Shatner's plan was they meet (and battle!) ---Satan.
And Eric Van Lustbader was going to write it
and Sean connery was going to star as the villain--who was later named Sybok--who captures the ship.

And if you think any of that was ever going to happen---I have some land here in South Florida I want to sell you---waterfront but far from the ocean.

Also at Memory Alpha they quote Shatner as saying that after Connery fell through they tried to get Max Von Sydow but he was 'asking too much money" ????

So in 1989 Shatner thought Connery was cheaper to get than Max Von Sydow???
The delusions, by many people, about this movie go waaay back aparently.

Up to TREK VI now and am extremely pleased with this terrific set.

Can't wait to add JJ's tremendously entertaining new TREK film to my library . I've seen it 4 times in IMAX and it gets better every time!

Oops, I guess i did get carried away.
But have no fear---i won't have the last word and i'll be proven wrong--even if we have to have connery's agent come here and say,

"Yes, we were considering it. Disappointed we had to go with Lucas, Spielberg & Harrison Ford instead."


But i too cannot wait for the Trek 2009 movie on blu.

I hope we get EVERY trailer/tv spot and ALL the deleted scenes that have been mentioned. Also lots of 'making ofs', commentaries and storyboards of the never-filmed Klingon-Narada battle scene.

AND we don't have to worry about any 'restoration' of this brand-new movie!!

Btw I agree with you regarding Connery not going anywhere near Trek V. I am actually shocked to hear that some thought it was an actual possibility!

Also can't wait for TNG Films on BLU too. Hell, I even liked Nemesis!

I'm more anxious for TOS Season 2 & 3 than the Next Gen films.

In fact Ill probably only opt for First Contact when they come out. Unless the box set is priced under $25.

Me too! Up until now, the best we've seen the Remastered S2 and S3 is on DVD. So it will be quite exciting to see Amok Time and The Doomsday Machine and the others in HD! I'd sure like to find the latest info on release dates.

I haven't seen any of the new F/X episodes from season 2 or 3 at all. it'll be all fresh and new to me (hence my anticipation)

Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm DYIN for seasons 2&3 on BLU. Caught Doomsday Machine with new fx on tv in SD and it looked terrific. Can't wait to see it in true HIDEF!

I guess Shatner forgot Kirk met and defended the alien who was the Satan of legend in the animated series. Pretty heady stuff for Saturday morning tv!
I seem to recall that Roddenberry had an early TMP idea of the Enterprise crew getting mixed up with god and the devil too.

I'm eagerly anticipating J.J. Abrams' film to hit BD, too. Everything you brought up should be on there. Paramount did an outstanding job marketing this film, and it should all be preserved on disc. I can't tell you how many times I've watched them all on the official website.

I was disappointed that Brad William Henke's role (which I've read is a first for "Star Trek") was dropped, but they had to get to Chris Pine's Kirk so it is understandable. Hopefully it will be among the deleted scenes.

Wow, don't get me started on TOS season 2 & 3.

For once we the perfect package in season 1 on Blu-ray.

I had the HDDVD of season 1 and hats off to the Blu-ray version.

Every thing I ever heard from people about what they wanted for a high-def TOS release CBS got right.

Both mono AND 7.1 sound
Both original and new FX
Virtually ALL previous extras.
Less discs than the HDDVD version
Better & less balky packaging
Better price
The episode previews on the HD side of the disc


And to those few people who said,

"THe original series was never meant to be seen in high-def!!""

You're idiots.

All the doom and gloom about the 'cheap sets' & cheap make-up' and 'cheap costumes' looking terrible in high-def--------wrong.

It's a testament to all the great work they did with limited time and budget in 1964-1969 that so much of what they created looks absolutely fantastic in high-def.

Pikes denim 'picnic' jacket in Menagarie----stuning.
Commisioner Ferris' tunic in Galileo 7---wonderful
The location shooting in Shore leave, Arena, 'Archons' & 'City'----eye-popping
The two pilot's uniforms---fantastic
The bright colors they threw on the Enterprise walls & corridors (especially in early episodes)---brilliant
The Gorns beautiful tunic and bright green 'skin'---excellent
Even the monitors and bedding in sickbay---wow.

High-def didn't make good stuff look bad and bad stuff worse.......
It made good stuuf look great and bad stuff--well the few bad things looked bad even in VHS resolution and they didn't look much worse in high-def.

Can't wait for season 2 & 3 and PLEASE let the team who put together the season 1 Blu-rays put together the expected 'Director's set' of the Trek movies!!

Hey Camper.

I'm HOPING you can make me feel like a moron...am I just MISSING something somewhere in the BluRay Season 1 packaging or on the disc labels that shows what episodes are on what discs?? Cuz I'm not seeing it and it's driving me up the wall putting discs in and taking them out to find a particular episode.

PLEASE tell me I'm just overlooking something, and I'll take my lumps!

Did you look behind the inserts in the front case cover? The episodes are printed on the backside of the covers. You can see them with the case open on the front case cover and behind disc 7 on the back case cover. Just remove the 7th disc.

I would never call any specific person a moron or idiot---only groups of people.

Like people who didn't want TOS in High-def.

Calling Paul 'deluded' isn't the same----I am deluded about some things trek!

But yes you do point out a minor quibble i have with the Blu-ray set.

The listing of what episodes are on what discs........

They are listed on the front and back inside cover of the case. Pretty weak ! Especially since you have to remove disc 7 to see the back inside cover!

Also the fact that the episode listing is pretty obscurely written is proof you weren't being unobservant.

I really, really hope they take this complaint to heart and provide an insert for season 2 & 3. (Hey want to show how really cool you are CBS Home Video--? Put an insert for season 1 in the season 2 set as a bonus 'make-up' feature.)

Or better yet--just put it on the discs!

I prefer production order, but they are determined to leave Episode #1 'the Cage' (which aired in 1988 as a special) as part of season 3. To promote sales of season 3, I assume.
I'd buy season 3 anyway, but they seem to think it might be the deciding factor for some 'fence-sitters.'

I'm sure they'll address the complaint when they reissue TOS with the episodes in the right order for the 50th anniversary in 2016.

The only way I'd ever have the need to buy TOS again is if.....

They did a commentary for EVERY episode by surviving cast & guest stars---as has been done for some Twilight Zone episodes AND if the ever find deleted scenes from the series.
Paramount take note: Takei, Nichols, Koenig & Whitney are all well into their 70s....

I have heard ALL the many deleted scenes have been lost, but you never know.....

Nasty old 16mm copies of deleted scenes, deleted scenes bought by collector's way back when, fragments of surviving trims, etc.

Seriously it would have to be a pretty amazing release to need to replace this set.
