And that was my biggest problem...aside from the Clark/Lana claptrap. There is no way any writer/producer/studio is going to kill Lex Luthor in that way. He was punked, plain and simple. We're going to have this huge reveal later this season where Lex IS alive and Clark and Oliver and Chloe are all going to be in disbelief trying to get the audience to buy into that emotion when we know right NOW the character is NOT dead.

At least we got a good Chloe/Ollie scene out of the deal...

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

I'd agree that after the last few episodes (and the rest of the series), it'd be difficult to see Clark calling anyone but Lana his True Love.

I didn't like how they got rid of Lana for a number of reasons, but mostly because the dilemma and solution so obviously served a purpose outside the Smallville universe (casting). There were any number of of ways for Superman (or Lana, for that matter) to get that device off the roof and let it detonate in a way that wouldn't do much damage to Metropolis. This self sacrifice was just too hokey for me.

Also, I'm a bit tired of Lex controlling the world when he's basically on life support. It was halfway believable when Tess Mercer, but not so much now.

Although I don't think much of the chemistry between Lois/Clark, I'm ready to go ahead and see what happens there. I suppose it's the next best option since Chloe seems destined to play the role of sidekick. Why is it "good guys" on TV always have to overlook the obvious match anyway? Chloe and Clark would be great together.

Chloe not being with her husband is certainly odd, but the last few episodes have been odd in general, so I've effectively just casually watched and wait for them to end. Onwards and upwards. The writers were doing a good job before they torpedoed themselves with this Lana arc. Hopefully they can get back to it.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

I like how they foreshadowed the demise of Lana and Clark by having him fall victim to her Kryptonite necklace in season one.

Everyone came off as remarkably naieve by believeing that Lex was dead.

All in all i'm just glad that Clark and Lana are over, pains me to say that because there was a time when I loved them together but after getting a taste of Clark and Lois together I really want that to happen.

Oh, and btw, WHERE IN THE NAME OF SWEET CHRIST IS LOIS!?!?

Following that same line, notice the green ring Oliver was holding?

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

Yeah. He's going to regret that ring one day. I wonder if Lana will suffer any ill effects.

I was hoping that the kryptonite would have the inverse effect on her new "skin." In other words, the more Kryptonite that is absorbed, the more powerful she becomes. That would pit her feelings for Clark against her self-righteous need for power, and give their parting a bit more bitter of an aftertaste.

Unlike Lex he won't wear it on a daily basis, so it shouldn't cause him any ill effects. As we saw in the first season from the blind gypsy fortune teller, apparently Smallville follows the most recent Byrne Supes' reboot, where he gets cancer from the ring which causes him to lose his hand (and eventually worse). Of course he blames this all on Supes. Eventually Supes gets the ring and gives it to Batman.

Whether this is the same ring Ollie has or not, is up in the air. I'd say no. I think this is one of a number of "class rings" that Lex and Ollie shared with his few buddies at prep school (the ones Lex murdered in an earlier episode).

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

Possible good news on a season 9.... From the www.kryptonsite.com

(I highlighted the important info)
Quote:
It's Official: Slavkin & Swimmer Depart For Melrose Place
As previously rumored, two of Smallville's showrunners, Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer, will be departing the show to helm the CW's new revival of Melrose Place. The news was confirmed today in the Los Angeles Times and in Entertainment Wekk.

The report also states that a greenlight for more Smallville, under remaining producers Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson, is likely for Fall 2009.

Stay tuned for more details when and if they become available. Slavkin & Swimmer have been with Smallville ever since Season Two.

Is Smallville really a repeat again tonight? That is what my on-screen cable guide says.

Repeats until March.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

^ Yup. TVGuide has a repeat listed, IMDb says this week is "Prey" and next week is "Identity." New eps on March 5, with the return of Linda Lake. (Be prepared: four new eps in March and then nearly about month of repeats until April 23...if IMDb can be believed.)

Actually, the next new episode has been pushed back another week to March 12. According to kryptonsite.com & Mr. Video, this is the schedule for the rest of the year:

2/19 #8-7 "Identity" R
2/26 #8-8 "Bloodline" R
3/5 #8-10 "Legion" R
3/12 #8-15 "Infamous" NEW!
3/19 #8-16 "Turbulence" NEW!
3/26 #8-17 "Hex" NEW!
4/2 #8-18 "Eternal" NEW!
4/9 & 4/16 Repeats - To Be Announced
4/23 #8-19 "Stiletto" NEW!
4/30 #8-20 "Beast" NEW!
5/7 #8-21 Title Unknown NEW!
5/14 #8-22 Season 8 Finale - Title Unknown NEW!

Looks like only a couple of additional repeats after this drought we're in.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

I think the CW would be better served by starting Smallville later in the season. It seems like whenever the show airs for three or four consecutive weeks, the audience grows from week to week. This is a good thing. But, to have these long hiatuses between first-run episode clusters is counterproductive. It's like the network has to literally start from scratch three or four times a season. I just don't think you can spread 22 episodes of a one-hour episodic drama over an eight or nine month "traditional season" to maximum effect. Another option may to up the episode count since Smallville is one of the few consistently "bankable" programs on the CW network. The cast has been pared down over the years and each episode is more or less confined to a handful of existing sets, therefore I think production costs could be fairly easily controlled.

Remember the days when tv shows went 24 or 26 episodes?

Yeah, but that also meant that the stars and creative teams of those series "burned out" sooner! I'd rather do 22 episodes a year if it means more episodes spread out through the show's long-term run!

Yeah like Gunsmoke.

The killing pace of delivering "I Love Lucy" episodes for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz probably contributed as an aggravating factor in their real-life marriage's messy breakup, for example! That's not only burnout, that's the complete devastation of the principal performers' personal lives!

TV Guide printed a pic of the new DC comic character appearing in Hex...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

They definitely got the look and costume right.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

Renewed for another season! Now the conjecture can cease.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

The renewal is a tremendous relief to me, I was afraid this might be it and it wouldn't end on a satisfactory note but now they've got an entire season to get Clark and the other characters where they need to be.

That is assuming that season 9 will definitely be the last which i'm pretty sure it will be.

Wow, 9 seasons, that's a great run!

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

^ Never say never. It's not like Tom Welling has a movie career he needs to get to. And this is the CW which needs all the buzz and ratings it can get.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

if this becomes 10 seasons, wouldn't it tie stargate as the longest SF series?

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

Longest-running American SF series. Nothing is ever going to catch the first iteration of Doctor Who.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

www.kryptonsite.com has announced the title for the 2nd to last episode of the season. Its a bit of a spoiler (but, something thats been alluded to)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Injustice Which seems to allude to Tess' group of superpowered villains she was putting together. Hopefully, we will be getting that Justice League vs Injustice League fight soon. Maybe, this is the episode when Clark flies.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

We all knew it was going to be reset by the end, so it wasn't that special. I didn't really buy Clark becoming Public Enemy #1 based on a single interview with a nut, but maybe I'm underestimating the fear people would instinctively have for a Kryptonian.

The Jimmy thing continues to be weird. He and Chloe are still married, but we only hear about him now and don't see him. Is the actor out on maternity leave or something?

I liked the movement on the Lois/Clark relationship. She was looking good tonight. The one thing I was hoping he'd say when she found out Lana and Chloe knew first? "They discovered my secret. You're the first one I've told." I don't know if that's true or not--didn't he volunteer the information to Allison? But, something along those lines would have been nice.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

What was the implication at the end.
chloe wonders how clark might have changed and just before that
he nearly kills Lake, and has an odd look on his face as it after he does it.

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

Pretty tepid episode IMO. You'd think after a month off, the producers would want to come back with something a little more substantial. I'm not sure I like this current Doomsday story line. Doomsday to me has always been the ultimate mindless destruction machine. This whole repressed multiple personality angle seems unnecessary and somewhat pointless. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it plays out, but so far, I'm not digging it...

Re: Smallville season 8 thread

More spoilers regarding the 2nd to last episode...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Tess's gang includes characters named Plastique, Leech, Fallout, and Voltage. Plastique is, of course, Bette from the episode of the same name. Leech is not Eric Summers, sadly, but instead is a "cocky skate punk."
- Green Arrow saves Clark from the Leech character, and Clark discovers that Oliver has Lex's Kryptonite ring.
- Chloe seems to be working with the Injustice Gang; for why, we don't know, but she doesn't seem to be acting like herself.
- Tess is determined to find the Traveler.
- Clark confronts Oliver about having the kryptonite ring, and learns that Oliver obtained it after killing Lex (in "Requiem").
- Oliver gives Clark something that may help to vanquish Doomsday.
- Tess also seems determined to stop Doomsday.
- The "very valuable" thing Tess gets a hold of is the Phantom Zone crystal.

Some spoilers regarding the season finale....

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The finale is called "Doomsday" and here are some tidbits...
The "very big thing" we teased... yep, it's more guest heroes. Though we're veering on the side of it being the Justice League rather than the Legion as Ausiello had hinted. Apparently a new set is being constructed to tie in with their return. Don't be surprised if even a character like Kara makes a return, too (though if it doesn't, this is speculation not a spoiler so don't blame KryptonSite for fake spoilers!).
