HD TV show weirdness

I downloaded a few of the new HD TV shows, Lipstick Jungle and Life. When I 'bought' them (for free) it immediately gave me downloads for both the HD and SD versions. That's weird I thought, and I cancelled the SD downloads.

Tonight when I started iTunes again it downloaded the SD versions again!

Any way to tell it not to do this? No need to add another 500 megs when each HD show is already 1.5 gigs...

Lots of discussion at Apple support forums. Word is Apple gives you both because the HD version will not play on an iPod. So I guess you are an ingrate ;-)

Seriously, just let it finish, then delete it.

There was some other weirdness too. Lots of users report that they were only getting the SD version, even if they were downloading the HD (I was in that boat).

The fix? Set iTunes to allow 1-Click purchases. I have NFI what that has to so with anything, but in my case, it worked (although I had to stop/restart iTunes for it to function).

And, when I was using a shopping cart, all the titles I asked for said "unavailable". But, you could still click "Buy".

FTR, all titles that I have experience with are the free NBC HD downloads.

So, all that said, it would seem that purchasing HD TV shows from iTunes 8 may in fact be a work in progress.

Re: HD TV show weirdness

I've been trying to download the free HD NBC episodes, but I can't. I add them to my cart, but then they're listed as "unavailable" in the cart.

I don't want to turn on 1-click shopping since I have a number of songs in my cart for possible future purchase (since iTunes doesn't have a "wish list") -- and I don't want those automatically purchased.

Thanks for the info guys! I have 1 click on by default.

Re: HD TV show weirdness

Anyone use these with Apple TV?

I was trying to figure out why my Apple TV would not seem to let me sync just the HD versions. I notice that the list of programs to sync is by show title, not episode title. So, it appears that it was all or nothing for a given series.

But I found that if I went to Get Info/Sorting, I could change the name of the shows to showname-HD and showname-SD. For example, my SD and HD episodes of Psych are now Psych HD and Psych SD.

As such, I now had separate entries in the ATV's TV Show sync list.

Being very new to downloading TV shows to iTunes, is this the easiest way to accomplish that result?

I have plenty of disk space on the AppleTV, so I just let it sync both (if it even does). All I know is that when I play the show, it plays the HD one. It just worked
