HDMI receiver question

Thread Starter
OK...

So...I have a new PS3 that I would like to use to take advantage of the advanced audio codecs (DolbyTrueHD/DTS-HD-MA) in 7.1 via HDMI.
However, I guess I don't fully understand how I can do this.

I've read all about LPCM vs. bitstreaming but don't know if the LPCM "stream" can be sent to "just any" receiver through the HDMI connection?

Any info will be greatly appreciated!

Re: HDMI receiver question

You need a receiver that will accept 7.1 LPCM, your PS3 can't 'bitstream' all the new codecs. Just about every receiver with HDMI v1.1 and up will accept 7.1 LPCM (or PCM, however they list it). Most receivers are HDMI v1.3 now, like the Onkyo 605 or Yamaha rx-v663. It doesn't matter that you can't bitstream, sending out PCM will give you identical sound. Nobody has been able to prove otherwise.
