I think Halloween 4 is one of the best Halloween sequels and the closest to the feel of the original (I like Halloween II more but it does just follow all the Halloween/Friday The 13th clones by amping up the gore and bodycount rather than going for suspense like the original). I completely agree that HIII is worlds better than H5 though.

Yeah, I used to hate Halloween III but I saw it on cable a while back and it actually wasn't that bad then I bought it on DVD for a cheap price last year and watched it and it's actually pretty good.

I wouldn't say it's perfect but it feels like a John Carpenter film - Dean Cundey's great widescreen photography, Carpenter's music, both of which contribute to some great shocks and eerieness!

I like 4 though and think it did a good job of capturing some of the feel of the first one and 5 I feel actually picks up toward the last half and has some geniunely scary and exciting scenes.

I think the first Halloween sequel compliments the original, a lot like Rocky II compliments the original.

Last year I picked up that Halloween II/III double feature DVD set. Both were great fun to see again. This year I picked up IV to watch. The trailer to V just told me I could wait on that.

What are everyone's thoughts regarding "Tales From The Darkside: The Movie". I've never seen it, nor heard about it until just a couple of weeks ago. All I know is that it apparently has the same vibe as the "Creepshow" films as well as "Cat's Eye" (all of which I love). Also, are there any other multiple-story horror films worth recommending? I find these are great for my Halloween movie nights as they add a great variety to the mix.

I just recently added Tales from the Darkside: The Movie to my collection a couple months ago. I liked it... thought it was a lot of fun... I particularly enjoyed the last segment that starred Rae Dawn Chong. The wraparound story was good on it... but felt it was a little too much on the Silly Side for my taste.

I also really enjoy Anthologies (Multi-Story Movie)... here is what I have (and my ratings out of 5) in my collection so far...

Highly disappointed. Doesn't even come close to Creepshow (or CS2 for that matter). The first story about the mummy is pretty good. But to me, the rest were mediocre and instantly forgetable. The old TV show is waaay better.

My favs:
1. Creepshow
2. Tales from the Crypt (original Amicus)
3. Twilight Zone: The Movie
4. Cat's Eye
5. Creepshow 2

I really love TZ:TM, but I do feel expanding on the old TV episodes lessened their impact by a significant degree. The one Speilberg did, "Kick the Can", was extremely entertaining, but didn't even come close to the original in terms of weirdness. The old episode version just freaked me out because it didn't contain so much explanation and closure to the story that he put in the movie version. Lookalike kids? Well, now you KNOW the old people turned into children. In the TV episode you never really know.... It just ends and I was left wondering if they really turned into kids at all. [soapbox]When things are left open it leaves your mind to wonder and try to fill in the spaces with whatever your imagination can come up with. [/soapbox] There ya go Mr. Speilberg, chew on that sir!

Anyway, I bought so many for this year, most of the Amicus ones, my list might alter.

I like bad horror anthologies too, like Deadtime Stories and Alien Zone/House of the Dead. Mainly for nostalgia purposes. In my teens I'd watch those in complete late at night hoping for some shots of boobies!

Funny you saying that... I actually forget the mommy one... took me several minutes to think of what you were speaking of. But over-all I enjoyed all the stories... just the wrap-around story I wasn't all that thrilled with.

I have it on the 50 horror movies pack, but noticed that you can buy a single release on Amazon now. The single release may possibly be the worst dvd cover art I have ever seen in my life.

I enjoyed all those as well.
I guess I expected something more in line with the TV show. I saw the movie on cable years ago and really liked it then.

I downloaded if off a website last year that was listing it as PD. How's the quality of the one in that 50 pack?

The single version cover makes me queasy to look at it!

It actually gets better as it goes along. I like the theme song since it was one of the few things I remembered about it from seeing it before. That, and how mean the uncle(?) was who was reading the kid stories. It was fun seeing it again last year.

Btw, no one is seconding Princess Bride? If not, you folks maybe should revisit it.

It definitely looks like it won't be the best movie in the world... to say the least.... but I have a funny feeling it will be entertaining at the same time. We will see.

If I am not mistaken... I think that is one of the movies that someone said it was geared towards kids/family. Of course that don't mean it is bad... I still enjoy watching Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark? with my daughter!

Different opinions regarding "Darkside" but I think I'll take my chances. I saw the trailer and it looks like something I might enjoy. Either way, it's cheap enough so if it sucks, at least I'm not out big bucks. lol. Thanks again!

That's the one, Pete! The original poster (the second picture at the listing on amazon) is a much much better cover. Why, oh why do they have to mess with it? Even on that b-movie the poster was kind of cool.

Hope you enjoy it. It's pretty good. Now, Alien Zone (House of the Dead) has a cool ending story that is very much like a SAW movie. I really like the first story on that one about the weird kids.

I'll bet you like it. I need to give it another go with my expectations under my feet. Are you Afraid of the Dark is one I sadly missed. Looks like something I'd like too.

yeah... the movie poster for Deadtime Stories definitely looks better then the DVD Cover.

If you want a cheap way to check out what Are You Afraid of the Dark? is like... you should check out this 2 disc set it is at amazon for only $5.99... and one of the kids in it is a young Elisha Cuthbert (Kim Bauer on 24).

Quality of the film in the 50 pack.....umm less than VHS. That's why I may have to spring for the newer release. I'd give anything to have the soundtrack on cd.
The song in the beginning is so odd. If I had it, I'd play it for my friends and tell them(very convincingly) it's my favorite song in the whole world. Their reactions would be worth the effort.

I didn't see Princess Bride listed in this thread anywhere. Of course I second it. In the Fall season it's required viewing.

Pete, maybe you can answer this since you have it. I just watched the trailer today for "Tales From The Hood" but everywhere I look online, it's listed as full frame. I also saw various scenes someone posted on YouTube which are indeed widescreen. Would you mind letting me know the AR of the DVD? I just found out HMV has it in stock for only $4. Thanks in advance.

I just checked DVD Profiler... it is listed at 1.85:1 Widescreen. Then I double checked that info on the disc itself. And it is indeed Widescreen. Now I have seen re-releases come out in Full Screen only... but that is usually when both versions are on the same disc... and my disc is only Widescreen. So I would think you should be safe. As long as you are talking about the R1 release.

I thought the original (with Karen Black) was very frightening. That doll was extremely creepy. I didn't care for II (with Lysette Anthony) as much, but some might like it. I thought the first one was far more terrifying.

My daughter (14) saw a special on the first trilogy one night when we were watching a special on Dan Curtis. After that, she's been asking me to get the original Trilogy of Terror.

Yeah, it's a nice poster and a good example of how screwy they are with changing these things for DVD releases. I guess it saves them money. But it sure doesn't scream "buy me". The original poster would definitely sell more, I'll bet.

Cool! That's cheap. Might make a good xmas gift for my nieces. I might just spring for the season 1 some time for myself though.

I read the single release has the credits missing at the end. People weren't bowled over by the quality of it either. You might want to give it a pass.

Yeah, that song is a good kind of bad. Kind of like that song from Halloween III. Silver Shamrock. It don't leave you when the movie is over!

HERE'S WHERE I GOT MY COPY OF THAT. Hopefully this website isn't taboo here. they seem to have some things that have official releases, like Devil Times Five which I just bought.

I have to admit I didn't care a whole lot for Ludlow. Now, Devonsville is on a DVD set with the original Boogeyman, and that's one I keep meaning to pick up. Boogeyman is on youtube in complete.

I like small town horrors as well. For years I was haunted by the trailer for Black Christmas. Gave me nightmares as a child. Finally bought the DVd last year and thought it was excellent...even though the DVD version I bought didn't include that wonderful trailer. Also, if they ever get around to releasing The Town that Dreaded Sundown (another trailer that haunted me as a child) we'll be better for it. Great small town horror. Dark, grizzly...perfect!

My Bloody Valentine trailer scared me as a child too. What a sissy I was!! That's one I really wanted to buy this year. The opening scene is on youtube. That definitely sells it. But I have so many slashers for this year.

Could someone please tell me what they think is the best released version (DVD) of the three "Lagoon" films? I haven't researched it yet. I am hoping to pick up The Creature From the Black Lagoon, Revenge Of the Creature, and The Creature Walks Among Us soon. Many thanks.

The Franchise edition of Lagoon with all 3 films is the one to get. I never had problems with the flipper disc, some might of. All the films looked great, and the extras are top notch.

I tend to stay away from flippers (esp. for t.v. shows); however, for films I am a bit less restricting. Many of the films I own have the full screen and widescreen editions (via flippers) in one and the same package.

I have 3 of the Legacy Collections myself... Dracula, The Wolf Man & Frankenstein. I do want to eventually get the other 2 as well (Creature from the Black Lagoon & Invisible Man).

you get the set with the head busts? That's the one I got, great deal too!

I got all of them, their all pretty good and cheap too. only one disc I've had issues with. I think it's in the Frankenstein one, the "House Of Frankenstein" gets a bit sticky during the layer change on one of my players, but that's all. These ones have 2 movies per side, so 4 movies on a disc. Lagoon only has three movies, that disc 2 might not even be a flipper, I can't recall off the top my head. Really great value too.

I really want to replace my VHS copies of all those Universal flicks. Years ago I picked up a LP tape of Creature from the Black Lagoon. LP! I'd love to see all those in cleaned up DVD versions.
