What's up with DVD+R (RW)?

First time in a long time I actually purchased DVD+R (RW) discs
as I had heard the error correction is much better over the -R discs.

...but here is the problem.

Can't figure out how to write to them more than once.

Using TOAST I copied and burned some files to a DVD+R (RW) disc.

Next time I wanted to add files to it, I inserted the disc but
Toast recognized it as full and would not rewrite to it.

Can you rewrite to a RW disc on Mac and how is it done?

Thanks!

may be you the disk is just under protection, you should unlock it first.

Just because your discs carry the "RW" logo somewhere on the package or even the disc itself, does not automatically make them re-writeable.

I have a DVD+R disc here that shows the RW logo, but also has this written on the case:

"-The DVD+R disc conforms to DVD+RW Basic Format Specifications (RW).
-This product is a write once disc for use in DVD+RW/+R drives and DVD+RW Home Video Recorders."

Notice how it says "write once disc".

Make sure you actually have re-writeable media; it should be specifically stated on the package/media.

Interesting.

I have no label on my packaging. Came in a spindle from Amazon.

I am guessing now this is write once media.

Thanks for the insight.

Did you want to add files to it (multi-session) or did you want to erase and start over? I don't have Toast in front of me, but there should be a menu item or something to erase the disc. Apple Disk Utility can also erase. If you can erase, then it is RW and "working".

Re: What's up with DVD+R (RW)?

Ron, you might have Toast configured to finalize the disc. If you do, even if you use a RW disc it can't be added to. If it is an RW disc and has been finalized, just insert the disc, start Toast and choose Recorder>Erase and once it's erased, start over.

To avoid this in the future, choose Recorder>Recorder Settings, under the Advanced tab, for the Data CD. Instead of "Write Disc" choose "Write Session". Even though it is talking about CDs, I believe this also applies to DVDs. I can't remember if I have done this myself on DVDs. There are format limitations and I can't remember what is allowed and what isn't. The problem is, if the disc isn't finalized, it may not be readable by some machines.

John and all,

Thanks for the advice.

I suppose that my disc is not rewritable. Just tried John's
instructions above with TOAST and I get a message saying that
my disc is not compatible.

Ron, I had forgotten, but for some reason (+) discs always have the RW symbol on them as well. They have to actually say "Rewritable" on them to be rewritable.
