What are you listening to right now? - Page 22

The Night Before (from Help!) (Beatles).  Note the wonderful vocal articulation around 1:09-1:11-ish.  McCartney doesn't do it anywhere else in the song.  The contrast between what he does there (detached syllables) and what he chooses to do elsewhere on similarly-texted lines (more legato-like) is very musical.  Also, the cross-relations sung by McCartney (on 'treat' and 'did') are exceptional.  (The text 'did' includes what amounts to a subtle acciaccatura.)  The cross-relations aren't quite the blues notes we get when Lennon sings the text 'right' (i.e., 'feel ... all right' and on 'o - kay' in A Hard Day's Night), but they're close.

In my experience, I would have to say that Help! is one of the Fabs' most underrated albums.  The songs are top-notch, and the Beatles are at the height of their compositional ingenuity, at least far as the beginning of their 'middle period' material is concerned. ;)

The Best of Delany & Bonnie to be followed by Delany & Bonnie & Friends-On Tour with Eric Clapton. Saw D & B live in NYC's Central Park in the early 70s. I consider them one of the greatest American Rock'n'Roll bands ever.

The Barbarian (from Emerson, Lake, & Palmer) (ELP).  Amazing drumming on this instrumental, especially beginning around 1:24 or so.  And how about the tonal center of F-sharp minor?  That's an interesting key for pop-rock, and one I don't hear all that often in the genre.  Pink Floyd's Time is also in this key.  Does anyone hear any similarities with regard to the piano parts in The Barbarian to works on Brubeck's Take Five album?

Next up: Fugue No. 16 in G Minor (Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, Book II) ( J. S. Bach).

Michael Jackson - Hello World

This is the 3 disc Hip-O Select set of MJ's 4 early 70's solo albums done for Motown before he moved to Epic.
(Got To Be There, Ben, Music & Me and Forever Michael).
Also includes the tracks from Farewell My Summer Love and Looking Back To Yesterday, both were released in the mid 80's post Thriller and contained vault material.

A lot of the earlier material sounds dated but on the whole I'm enjoying it far more than I expected. Very interesting to hear his voice develop.

Hearing an 11 year old Michael sing makes the whole thing just a little bid sadder.
