HDMI-pass through / Motorola DVR freezing up

Thread Starter
Components:
Onkyo SR 505 Reciever (2 hdmi in, 1 out - passthrough ONLY!!)
Motorola DCT 34121 hdmi DVR
ViewSonic 32" HD LCD - 1 hdmi in
Toshiba A3 DVD

Problem: Everything works fine. I turn on TV, Receiver, and DVR stays on (I'm told to leave it on by Comcast). Watch tv, listen to sound. Turn off TV, and Receiver.
3-4 hours later, turn TV and Receiver back on and the DVR freezes up. I don't get a video feed; cannot change channels, cannot power off, and remote does not work but I get audio! I can unplug the DVR for 5 seconds, plug it back in, and ALL works fine.

I returned the DVR to Comcast, tried a new one. Same problem.
As of now, I've eliminated any HDMI cables to see if component works. I'll know tonight if DVR has issues, but shouldn't.

What am I doing wrong? I SHOULD have done more homework and bought the Onkyo 605, but this is what I have now, and it's not going to change for a while.

Is there a certain way HDMI pass through MUST BE connected?

When I first got the DVR last week, this is how I hooked everything up, and I left the DVD out of the loop.

DVR->Receiver; hdmi(for video), and r&l component cables only for Audio
Receiver->TV; hdmi (video feed), and r&l component for audio out

thanks for your help!

Re: HDMI-pass through / Motorola DVR freezing up

I am having the same exact problem. I do not know which model my Comcast Motorola DVR is because it was just switched out for a new one (the problem is still occurring).

I have a Hitachi P50V701 TV and an Onkyo 505 reviver. I have HDMI pass-through on the receiver, so the video is transmitted from the DVR to the receiver via HDMI and then HDMI to the TV. I am using digital audio cables to transmit the audio from the DVR to the receiver.

I have had my system hooked up for about three months and it worked fine until about two weeks ago. When I turn everything on (after being off for 2-3 hours), I can hear audio though my receiver but there is no picture. The Motorola DVR will freeze and the only way to fix it is to unplug it, I can not power the DVR off with the remote or from the DVR. Comcast is coming back out tomorrow so we will see if I find anything out.

Damien – By eliminating all HDMI cables, did that fix it?

Any help/suggestions anyone is able to provide would be appreciated. I am not sure if I am missing something.

Thanks you!

Re: HDMI-pass through / Motorola DVR freezing up

Hi all, new member here. I realize this thread is very old, but I've been searching online for similar problems as mine to no avail and finally came across this thread in a google search. I'm having the exact problem as the previous posters. I originally had Comcast's new Motorola DVR and it wouldn't power on or off after leaving it alone overnight or while at work, and I swapped that out for an older box thinking it might work, but same problem. I have the Onkyo HT-SR550 receiver connected to my Samsung 4665F. The Comcast "technician" didn't have a clue what was wrong.. "dust, heat, could be a number of things..." None of the customer support representatives could figure it out either. Does anyone have a clue what this problem might be?

I am having the exact same problem. I had an older comcast cable box and had it hooked up with DVI/HDMI cord to my Onkyo Reciever on passthrough. Froze every time. I just got a brand new HDMI comcast box and am having the same problem. HDMI and Cable box work fine when hooked to my SHarp LCD tv but freezes in a few hours when connected to reciever in passthrough mode. Anyone have a solution to this problem?

Also i recieve a DU1 error messege sometimes. Not surte what this means but i think it has something to do with an HDMI or DVI connection error.
