Legal iTunes-like ripping for DVDs - could be pretty cool

Real DVD: legit DVD copying, playback, but is it too late?

My title is probably an over simplification, but the software seems to allow the ripping and playback of DVDs on up to 5 PCs (and only PCs - no generic portable devices). It'll allow legal PC libraries which'll be nice. Unfortunately it requires you to use the Real Software for playback.

I didn't see in the arcticle if it handles high def.

It seems somewhat limiting, but I think I'll be giving it a test run.

What's the point? DVD Decrypter is legal to use in any country with reasonable copyright laws.

First of all, the legality in the U.S. is not yet clear. RealNetworks has chosen to take a calculated risk. Among other things, both the NYTimes and the WSJournal have reported that RealNetworks' product depends for its legality on the ruling in the Kaleidescape case from several years ago. That case is on appeal. No one knows what will happen if the ruling is reversed.

Second of all, regardless of legality, the HTF Rules haven't changed, and they still say what they say until the owners change them. From Rule 5:

Quote:
We also do not allow discussion of . . . (b) how to defeat any form of copy protection (including, for example, how to make “personal” copies of commercially produced DVDs) . . . .
And finally (this is for Mr. Howson), this is also from Rule 5:

Quote:
Please do not try to debate copyright law with us. We’re not interested in discussing what the law should be.
Thread closed. Everyone else please take note.

Here we are, almost a year later, and guess what? A judge has ruled that this product violates U.S. law and permanently enjoined RealNetworks from selling it:
