Re: General Stargate questions

What is the deal with the crappy, horrible, crappy pilot title sequence being used for all of seasons four and five on disc? They didn't really air that way, did they? If they didn't, was it the unchanged title sequence from episode two through season three?

I still don't get the reason why they don't have a DHD. In the current season I'm watching, they almost destroyed a planet and lost Teal'c in two separate incidents because the computer program didn't have the safeguards of the DHD. They borrowed the Russian DHD. Last we saw, the Antarctic DHD was in Area 51. So, why not drive down there and pick it up?

Actually, yes they did. The first five seasons all originally aired that way. The opening titles you see for seasons 1 - 3 on DVD were actually made for syndication (though the episodes themselves are the same as the original Showtime airings).

It's explained in a season 6 episode that the Antarctic DHD ran out of power after it had been used a few times, indicating that it was one of the oldest in the gate network.

Symbiotes roasting on an Unas fire
Jaffa sniping at your nose
Cheyenne Mountain in full lockdown
And Teal'c dressed up in Murray's clothes

I think the sale is off, but I got S9, S10 and Atlantis S1 for $18 a piece at Target this weekend. Everyone else had them for about $36! Even if the sale is over, I've seen them that cheap at Target before. If anyone is looking for seasons, you might want to check there. Though, those were the only ones three Targets had.

That makes sense. I wondered how they had footage from so late in the first season to make that montage. In fact, there might even be images from season two. I had them all placed when I was watching the early seasons, but I no longer remember.

The original intro is not bad in and of itself, but it's ultra-grainy and with very cheap-looking titles.

I'm at the end of season 5, so I should be seeing the new sequence very soon. I don't have any memory of what it looks like. I do feel like I've reached the end of really great Stargate, though. I don't think 6 with Quinn is horrible, and we have some good stuff like the earth's own spaceship, but I don't have good memories of 7. I hope I like it better this time.

The problem, IMO, is that they were copy+paste'd straight from the original movie, where they made sense... but they don't really fit with SG-1, especially with the faster version of the theme music and everything. It's just jarring.

Season 7 overall is probably my least favorite of the later years of SG-1, but it does have some really good episodes to make up for the not-so-good ones.

It's three months too late, but I wanted to thank Roger for the information he provided. We posted at the exact same time, so I missed it until I started rereading the thread.

Re: General Stargate questions

Watched Prophecy last night (penultimate episode of season 6). It gets high marks at tv.com, but I don't know.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The SGC gets punk'd by a third-rate Goa'uld lackey? And, his brilliant strategy is "let them escape and wait at the gate?" Come on. SG-1 wouldn't be lame enough to let that work. Of course, stranger things have happened in real life, but I don't want to believe my fictional heroes could be taken down by a loser like Lord Mot.

Other than that, it was pretty good, which goes for the entire season. I like Jonas Quinn.

I'm nearing the end of episodes I've already seen. One more season until it's uncharted territory. I got 9 and 10 for Christmas and have 8 coming in the mail.

What's your plan for Atlantis? Gonna watch in line with SG-1 or save it for later?

Re: General Stargate questions

I'm pretty sure I'm going to follow your advice and swap them out so it'll be like the night they aired. It was SG-1 followed by Atlantis, right?

Re: General Stargate questions

u can safely finish watch SG1 without having to dip into SGA like how buffy&angel crossed over. there weren't any direct influences. just know in the back of ur mind as u watch SGA that SG1 was still goings on. that's all.

All you have to do is remember that everything on SGA happens after Jack O'Neill gets promoted to General!

There were a few, just not very big ones. I maintain, though, that alternating SG-1/SGA is the best way to experience it even if it isn't absolutely necessary.

Re: General Stargate questions

I agree. I recently just rewatched all of SG1, not really thinking about Atlantis. And in many episodes of Seasons 8, 9 & 10, I'm like, well isn't such and such also supposed to be happening in Atlantis. Or they would refer to something that happened recently in Atlantis. I will probably wait a couple years then rewatch all of Stargate again, this time alternating when I hit Season 8.

Re: General Stargate questions

SGA is officially completed and finished. so now u can rewatch everything =P.

that is until SGU comes along

Well, they have to make them first.
I think it's still in the early writing stages, so.... not anytime soon, unfortunately.

Re: General Stargate questions

awww man!!!! =P. i'm guessing fall of 2009 ince they're shooting this spring according to gateworld.net or maybe spring of 2010 if the fx take too long.

in wonder if they'll get TWO direct to video like SG-1. speaking of SG-1, are they on track to do another? i just can't wait =P.

They're shooting one SG-1 and one Atlantis movie this year. Supposedly the SG-1 movie will have Jack as the central character.

Re: General Stargate questions

I'm noticing his role is very reduced already in season 7. I've listened to a few commentaries, and there have been a couple of times where they have said, "We came up with this idea so he could be out of the episode early."

Good deal!

I think the SGA 'movie' is set to appear FIRST on Sci-Fi THEN go to DVD/BD, as opposed to the SG1 'movies'.

where'd u read this? i miss the OLD SG-1

greg, the reason is because richard wanted to spend time with his family. that's why he bowed out early. working 12-16 hrs a day 7 days a week can put a wringer on family relationships and life =P. it's tough to be a thespian on schedule.

Brad Wright said it in interviews. He didn't say anything about who else will be in it, though (aside from confirming that Vala won't be).

Thanks. They might have mentioned that, but I haven't listened to every commentary. The ones I have heard leave an incomplete picture about the situation. I wondered if maybe he was just getting bored with the show. I don't like when an actor shows his boredom, but it's understandable when you're on for eight seasons. I doubt if anyone could have envisioned a Showtime sci-fi show having that kind of longevity.

Re: General Stargate questions

If you've seen RDA in real-life or have some kind of insight, explain something to me. In at least three commentaries now (season 7), Richard has been referred to as "big" and "imposing." What's the deal with that? According to the IMDb, he's 6'1"--a number I envy, but not incredibly tall. I think Chris is taller, and Michael is close in height. Even Amanda doesn't look so small standing next to him. Chris and Michael are pretty cut, but Richard seems maybe athletic but not bulked up. What am I missing?

Re: General Stargate questions

Part of it is the attitude. People with a lot of self-confidence, an outgoing personality, and a lot of moxie come across as more imposing than bigger people without those traits. RDA's got all of 'em in spades.

Re: General Stargate questions

yup. i never saw those things during macguyver =P though

Re: General Stargate questions

That makes sense in the context of the commentary I saw the other day. The director said, "I want you to play this scene bigger." RDA said, "BIGGER?!" He then made a big, hammy gesture at Daniel. The director said that as he walked off, he said, "You'll never use that!"

I'm close to the end of season 7. Two more to go. Finally, I'll be able to watch Atlantis! And, some SG-1 I've never seen. I said earlier that I didn't like S7 that much, but I think I watched the entire season when I was way too tired as I was going to bed. I can never enjoy shows that way. I've been watching it around 8 or 9 this time and have found it to be pretty strong, RDA's virtual absence notwithstanding.
