The Steelers have been terrible in 4th down short yardage situations this season.
Scott,

I wanted the Steelers to win that game, so I liked the outcome. However, I too was perplexed by that call. I was telling my wife and children that that call was going to stand as is. I was shocked when it was overturned and scored a TD.

Yeah, it would have been an interesting call by Tomlin. Do they play for the tie (and OT), or go for the win? The home teams seem to be doing well enough in OT games this year, so I would not have wanted to see Pittsburgh playing in OT at Baltimore. Since the Steelers only needed inches, I was thinking that either a quarterback sneak (or maybe an end around?) would have been called. Thankfully, it didn't come to that, though.

The Ravens and Patriots have identical records. The Ravens have a slight edge in the conference. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I will rooting (cough, cough) for the Dallas Cowboys next week....

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

15 down, 1 to go. Only 60 minutes stand between the Lions and NFL history. Granted they made history by becoming the first 0-15 team ever, but 0-16 would be forever remembered, just like the Patriots 16-0 last year.

If the Lions play at Green Bay like they did today, the Packers should win in a walk at what's sure to be freezing and windy Lambeau Field.

With the loss, the Lions "clinch" the #1 pick in the 2009 Draft. The question now is, do the Lions keep it or trade down for more picks? They already have the Cowboys first and third round picks, so they could parlay the #1 pick into more lower round picks and give themselves more shots at finding the solutions to their various problems.

However, considering the extremely high cost of signing a #1 pick, I don't think it'll happen and WCF will have to open up the checkbook and write what probably will be the last massive #1 pick contract i.e. 6 years and $50 million plus.

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

It matters not. Mr. Ford stated today that he is keeping current GM Mayhew, and COO Tom Lewand, both from the Millen regime. That means no Pioli, no Cower. The only thing we as Lions fans have to look forward to is the 11' lockout that will surely come.

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

Brandon, I'm not surprised that Ford may keep Mayhew. The guy is the most incompetent owner in pro sports. If this does indeed happen, I hope every single season ticket holder says "enough" and does not renew their tickets for next season. Such utter incompetence does not deserve to be rewarded.

Not only will the Lions go 0-16, but they have already clinched the worst home record in NFL history. Detroit broke NFL records by being outscored by a combined 176 points at home and by an average of 22 points. The 1981 Colts lost their home games by 146 points and the merged Steelers and Cardinals were defeated by an average of 21.4 points in 1944 with a depleted roster during World War II.

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

Panthers and Giants was a good game. Once again, Delhomme screws up. Next week the Chargers and Broncos play in San Diego for the playoff spot. And the cardinals played their starters for the first half and were losing 38-0 in Boston. There are a lot of pretenders this year in they play offs. Romo actually brought the Cowboys back into the game in the 2nd half, only to watch the defense give up two back to back 70+ yard TD runs.

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

The Eagles just fell flat big time. They don't deserve to make the playoffs with that type of performance. And I thought the Redskins have give up this season.

I hope the Broncos lose next week. They are the biggest and annoying fraud team this season.

I wish there was a way the Broncos and Chargers could both lose. What happens with a tie?

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

I was very happy to see Buffalo win yesterday, assuring that the Chargers / Broncos game now means something next week. It should be a good one.

The Dolphins can make the playoffs with a win. Amazing. If the Jets defeat them next week and the Patriots win, New England is in. However, if the Jets win and the Patriots lose, the Jets are in. I do love the NFL.

If I had my druthers, the Patriots would win, and the Dolphins and Jets game would end in a tie, thusly:

New England Patriots: 11-5-0.
Miami Dolphins: 10-5-1
New York Jets: 9-6-1

The defensive play by Skins DB LeRon Landry on that final play of the game to keep the Eagles receiver out of the end zone was one hell of a play.

If the Jets had only beat the Sea Ducks yesterday they would be in. And McBadd was back yesterday, not McNabb. I wonder who will play next week. If the Eagles beat the Cowboys AND Tampa Bay loses AND Chicago loses, then the eagles are in.

Steve,

Wouldn't the Jets still have had to have defeated the Dolphins next week? Defeating the Seahawks and then losing to the Dolphins would mean that the Jets would have finished 10-6, and the Dolphins would have finished 11-5.

They need way too much help. I just don't see the Bucs losing at home to the Raiders. The Raiders are pathetic.

Hate to say it, but it seems like the only way change will happen is after Ford Sr's death.

Ahh, right. It all sounds like a reasonable suggestion...unless you realize that he's a big supporter. You should mention that to the columnist.

But they should do something about Mike Brown.

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

I'm still in shock that the Falcons might end up as a 2-seed in the NFC if they beat the Rams and the Panthers fall in their last game this weekend. Given where the Falcons were just a year ago, it makes you wonder if Arthur Blank sold his soul to the devil, or what?

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

And I think the Ravens could still fail to make the playoffs if they lose. They would finish 10-6, and there are three AFC East teams -- two of which could win -- and as a result would finish at 11-5. One would be a division winner, and the other, the second wild card team, but only if the Ravens lose. They are at Jax. I don't know which Jacksonville team will show up this Sunday.

Here is what ESPN has to say about it. I'm glad I am not being tested on this.

Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens clinch a wild-card spot with a Baltimore win OR Baltimore tie and Miami loss or tie OR Baltimore tie and New England loss or tie OR New England loss.

Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins clinch the AFC East title with a Miami win OR Miami tie and New England loss or tie. The Dolphins clinch a wild-card spot with a Miami tie and Baltimore loss.

New England Patriots
The Patriots clinch the AFC East title with a New England win and Miami loss or tie OR New England tie and Miami loss. The Patriots clinch a wild-card spot with a New England win and Baltimore loss or tie OR New England tie and Baltimore loss.

New York Jets
The Jets clinch the AFC East title with a Jets win and New England loss. The Jets clinch a wild-card spot with a Jets win and Baltimore loss.

If Blank sold his soul to the devil, then who did H. Wayne Huizenga and Stephen M. Ross sell theirs to?

I agree with Walter C. that nothing will be done about the Lions situation until WCF is SFU.

Is there any hope for the Lions under new GM Martin Mayhew?

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

Nothing much to say about the Lions finishing 0-16 other than it wasn't surprising.

To no one's surprise, Marinelli was fired today.

Report: Parcells might leave Miami; Lions on radar | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press

I don't see why Parcells would leave Miami. I would imagine that the new owner would leave things they way they are considering the stunning turnaround from last year.

Not until the guy at the very top is gone. So no.

Here's the cumulative records of each division:

NFC East: 38-25-1
NFC North: 25-39
NFC South: 40-24
NFC West: 22-42
AFC East: 38-26
AFC North: 31-32-1
AFC South: 38-26
AFC West: 23-41

Even with the worst team in sports history in its division, the NFC North was only the 3rd worst division in the NFL this season record-wise. Yikes!

The Patriots go 11-5 and miss the playoff while the Chargers go 8-8 and make the playoffs? All-righty then!

I'm no Patriots fan by any stretch of the imagination, but there just something not right about going 11-5 and missing the playoffs.

As Zachary said, not until Ford, Sr. is no longer in charge. While the debacle of a coaching staff was fired today, the front office is going to remain intact, minus the rocket scientist that was Matt Millen.

Parcells may be interested in Detroit, but the moronic, incompetent, drunken old fool of an owner is not interested in him. Ford already declined to pursue Parcells once before, when he hired Millen.

The most surprising teams this season are obviously Miami and Atlanta. Each team showed what hiring quality front office and coaching personnel can do to turn around a franchise.

The most disappointing team has to be Dallas. The Cowboys were on the short list of Super Bowl favorites at the start of the season, and they crashed and burned big time in December.

The coaching firings have begun. Marinelli (Detroit), Crennell (Cleveland) and Mangini (Jets) were all canned today. I would expect Herm Edwards to be next. Bill Cowher has already said no to Cleveland, but has not ruled out coaching someplace else in 2009. Could he end up in New York?

Word is the new owner doesn't get along well with Parcells.

As a Pats fan, I'd generally agree considering some of the questionable records that have landed other teams in the playoffs. But the Pats had plenty of moments during this season to change their destiny (the butt-kicking by Miami being one of the biggest) and reach the playoffs, but they didn't take care of business. So I'm not going to pity them too much.

As long as Indy beats the Chargers next weekend, I'll be happy 'til 2009.

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

Just wow at Dallas. Can the entire team play worse football? Guess Romo crapped himself again, as he always does when it counts. Eagles are in thanks to Chicago and Tampa Bay losing. Charges made Cutler and the Broncos look bad. Jets are out and Matt Cassel wrote himself a $15Million dollar sallary next year. Brady rehab is not going well (except his engagement to gisselle) and Cassel may be franchised by the patriots, giving him $15million guaranteed for one year. If Brady can be back, Cassel can be traded, regardless, he cashed in on his exceptional talent.

Will Cassel turn into another Scott Mitchell next year, or actually play as well as this year's performance?

If he plays for any team other than the Pats, I predict he'll be a bigger free agent bust than Mitchell. This guy benefited immensely from playing for a team that went 16-0 the previous season, and has the best coaching staff in the league. Put him on a dismal team like Detroit or Kansas City, and he'd be just another mediocre QB.

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

I want to thank the Lions for not offering me any false hope for 2009.

Next spring's non-Millen draft can't help but infuse some desperately need talent into this moribund franchise, but we're talking what? Three wins maybe? Ugh.

Re: NFL 2008 Regular Season Discussion Thread

I've read that Brady's rehab has been going very well lately. I suppose it depends on what sources one consults.

I mentioned that I didn't think the Patriots would make the playoffs a few weeks ago; I think it was after their 18-15 loss at Indianapolis. As Malcolm wrote, they did have the opportunity to be 12-4 or 13-3, but they didn't capitalize. So no pity here either. That being said, I do hope that Tom Brady is 100% next year.

As far as 11-5 not being good enough, I have no problem with that, as the rules in place are quite clear on how teams make the cut. And I've been a Patriots fan since the late 1960s. The Cleveland Browns didn't make it either years ago with the same record.

I don't see the Dolphins defeating the Ravens. Some of the other games are tough to pick as well.
