Your first real "Wow" moment with BD - Page 2

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

First wow moment with high def was whatever sporting even I saw when I first got hd cable.

First wow moment with hd disc was with hd dvd and I'd probably say checking out The Searchers. I was amazed it looked that good.

First wow moment with blu-ray...hard to say since I had hd dvd for half a year before and have had hd cable for 4-5 years so it isn't like blu-0ray transforms high def. Maybe viewing Curse of the Black Pearl since it destroys the dvd so much and just generally looks and sounds great. Maybe the Prestige though before that. I don't know.

HD DVD of Planet Earth and Grand Prix.

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

Video wise I was floored by Cars, it's like looking at the most beautiful painting you can imagine in motion!

Audio wise it was hands down Cloverfield. It's the first BD I bought because I was extremely unhappy with the supressed and dull audio on the SD DVD (a pale imitation of the sheer aural assault I heard in the theater, the lows were there but even they rolled-off too soon but the highs were gone) and when I popped this sucker in I didn't know what I was in for! The audio on this BD is freakin' sick!

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

For High Def in general it would have to be the opening race sequence of Grand Prix. Just stunning.

Specifically for blu-ray it would be A Passage to India. The whole film is so beautifully photographed and the compositions stunning, it put most modern film makers to shame. Beautifully rendered on blu-ray.

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

For me it would be Planet Earth, hands down. Absolutely breathtaking. Anyone who likes nature documentaries owe it to themselves to get this!

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

my first experience was planet earth on HD DVD. that really showed me what the future of home video looked like... what it SHOULD have been in 1997 instead of SD DVD . i'm not even a nature-phile.

my second experience was sonically: Transformers on HD DVD, not even lossless (my BD is on order =D)

my third experience with REAL BD disc is either of the pixar movies: ratatouille or cars. the fact that both movies are excellent just simply adds to the whole experience.

oh yeah, i also loved watching casablanca, pure B&W bliss for me =D. i love old movies. i hope more of them come out.

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

Having a "wow" moment when Blu-ray is new is really not that hard. There is lots of really beautiful trtansfers out there that when seen for the first time, particularly on a large screen, will illicit the proverbial "deer in the headlights" stare. What I think is a bigger deal is having a "wow" moment AFTER using Blu-ray and/or HD DVD for a while. I had not one, but TWO "wow" moments just yesterday.

The HD restoration of How The West Was Won in "smilebox" on a 8 ft. wide screen at 11 ft. viewing distance. Holy crap. Give that guy a cookie.

A new film from Tarsem Singh (his last film was The Cell) titled The Fall. Holy crap. Give that guy a cookie, too (and the guys who did these transfers).

re: searchers, while the titles were great, teh open blue skies were also awesome =D. the details you can gleam from that to the specs of sand and dust are just incredible =D.

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

My first "WOW" moment was actually DISH network. I had just bought a 720 projector and 100 inch screen. I actually went from a 1080i set to 720, but huge screen + hd was more important to me than 45 inch 1080i. Anyhow...The first Colorado Avs game I watched on my projector absolutely floored me! I could see wrinkles in players jerseys.
Even though I don't have bd yet, my friend brought over his PS3, and we watched Die Hard with a Vengeance. Even though we were just using optical(no HDMI on my reciever) the sound BLEW ME AWAY! Even the "core" DTS on blu-ray outperformed my DVD, which I had seen multiple times. I wish I had HDMI!

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

I bought my 65" Mitsu on January 1, so the first HD experience was The Game. Even though i don't really care about sports, I was blown away by the detail in the broadcast.

My first BD wow was Bladerunner. As soon as the Tyrell Corp building came on, I paused it, loaded the DVD in my old player, played both and kept swapping back and forth, spouting nonsense to my wife! Even she was amazed.....

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

First - Phantom of the Opera HD-DVD (Z3 720p FP) several years ago.

Second - Nightmare Before Christmas Blu-ray (Epson 1080 UB 1080p FP), this was just two days ago, I got this PJ last week.

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

"The Road Warrior" on Blu. Seeing the texture of the road and the details I had never seen before, like REALLY being able to read all the signs and things.

Blew the old DVD away and had me sold.

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

I would have to say TV's "Lost" or a few of the HD video discs out there. HD on most film based material I see doesn't really snap at all to me contrary to what I've read in various columns.

The Searchers and Blade Runner.

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

I haven't been blown away by the video yet, but have been impressed by the audio. Sure I can see more and better, but not being a close-sitter nor using a PJ I'm kinda cavalier about it all, more of a nice incremental improvement.

What DID blow me away was Blade Runner in SD and not upscaled (yes, I have the BD set too), and a couple other recents in SD. Now they were a big WOW, compared to what we used to get...

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

Nothing will ever replace the initial WOW feeling I got as I watched the Dish demo channel on my first HDTV back 8 years ago. I'm reserving a smaller "wow" moment, I hope, for my soon to be viewing of How the West was Won in smilebox mode.

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

^ Yeah, that might be IT for me based on what I've read here. Unfortunately, I stupidly ordered this BD in Canada instead of in the U.S. as usual, without noticing it's not released here until 2 weeks later (i.e. next week)...

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

I've just got my new 1080P set eight days ago, so it's still new to me.
I'd decided that Blade Runner would be the first movie I watched on the set, and any doubts I had about my purchase vanished right from the start. It's extraordinarily good - and the great thing about the film is that it has so many sequences where they just stop and show you the city, so you can just sit and soak in the HD picture. Incredible.

Re: Your first real "Wow" moment with BD

Planet Earth for me, only because it's the first title I bought and watched on BD. It has since irked me with it's switching back and forth between HD and SD, as well as various picture quality problems. Still one of the must-have nature documentaries if you're into that genre, but PQ isn't the best.

Casino Royale was the real eye-opener though. Nevermind that it's the best Bond movie ever, the picture quality was stunning.

I'm glad HD is still new to me. I still marvel at how crisp text looks in end-credits
