What is the output from the analog connections in this case? I watched From Russia with Love this way, and it sounded like mono, but then again, I don't know how aggressive the 5.1 version is suppossed to sound.

While I do have a little upgrade fever (although I'm stubbornly holding onto my decade old Marantz brick s***house receiver), I suspect a little patience will be rewarded. In another month or two, players like this will hit the market, and if nothing else, drive down all the price points:

Vizio VBR100: Pretty $200 BD-Live Blu-ray Player

Re: Sony Bdp-S300: Dolby TrueHD with latest firmware

Depending on the content on the disc the player should be configured at 5.1 at all times. It just depends on how the movie was mixed and if it is actually playing a 5.1 mix or a stereo mix. But if something is 5.1 you should get 5.1 through your analog outputs.

If you are really happy with your Marantz receiver and have no problem with the player doing the decoder. Well I would keep your Marantz and look into the posibility of adding the Vizio. I would wait long enough to look into the reviews and see if there are any serious issues with this new player or not? I am not a big fan of off brands myself but for the money if it doesn't have any bad quirks it may be a good deal especially if it decodes everything.

Re: Sony Bdp-S300: Dolby TrueHD with latest firmware

The analog setting does present a somewhat different mix. (Perhaps I'm being deceived by the lower signal level though). I'm reluctant to change the channel settings, as I suspect the more frequently used digital settings will be moved out of whack.
Yes, the Vizio at this price point, seems a little to good to be true, if it performs as promised. In any case, I imagine this player, and others like it from the Korean conglomerates, will drive down the price of the name brand players in the not too distant future.

Re: Sony Bdp-S300: Dolby TrueHD with latest firmware

I bought this player and I wish I had DTS HD audio, but the "core" audio sounds better than any DVD I've ever heard, so I won't complain too much. I could care less about BD Live. As far as HD quality, WOW. I cannot tell a difference between the picture on the player and the picture on a PS3. If all you want to do is watch movies, and don't mind lack of bells and whistles, you will be satisfied with this player. Especially if you can pick it up for under $150!

Agreed. It's an excellent entry level BD player and I enjoy mine constantly.

Re: Sony Bdp-S300: Dolby TrueHD with latest firmware

I read on another forum, without explanation, that Dolby True HD decoding is only available now via HDMI. In other words, it is not supported by the analog outputs. Can anyone here confirm this?

Re: Sony Bdp-S300: Dolby TrueHD with latest firmware

Unless the last firmware update (4.5) changed something, TrueHD should still be available through the analog outputs. Sony hasn't said anything about disabling it.

When did this firmware get released? They did a firmware update at Ultimate Electronics when I bought it but am wondering if I am getting Dolby Tru HD out of the analog outs. How do I know? How do I set it up to do so?

If you can download and burn an ISO file to a DVD-R, you can update to 4.5 easily and quickly. Here is a link to the file and instructions.

The BDP-S300 will decode Dolby TrueHD and output analog audio up to 5.1 channels over the analog output. Dolby TrueHD is a compressed lossless digital audio codec so technically there is no way to send Dolby TrueHD over the analog output. Players with HDMI 1.3a can send the Dolby TrueHD signal to decoders with HDMI 1.3a input and decoding which of course the BDP-S300 can't do.

Re: Sony Bdp-S300: Dolby TrueHD with latest firmware

Once the player decodes TrueHD, it WILL send it via the analog outputs as 5.1 channel lossless PCM, which the S300 can do thanks to a firmware update.

Re: Sony Bdp-S300: Dolby TrueHD with latest firmware

thanks guys. I don't mean to drag this out but how can I actually TELL if it's playing the DolbyTruHD track? And also, do I have to set my player to any specific settings? I just checked and it is version 4.20, which adds Dolby TruHD, do I need to change the audio settings to Downmix PCM? All that shows up when I hit the audio button on either setting is Dolby Digital 3/2.1. There is no indication that I'm playing the DTru track. hrrrmmmm.

Need some help...I have the S-300 player and a Yamaha HDR-6050 receiver.  The receiver has two HDMI inputs one for the DVD player and the other for a sat receiver and one HDMI out to tv.  I hooked up the HDMI cables.  I get picture when switching to the DVD or sat inputs on the receiver but I don't get any sound. The speakers are good cause I got audio on the tuner and cd player.  When I bypass the HDMI cables to the receiver and hook the S-300 to my tv and the receiver via the analog cables using the 5.1 speaker inputs everything sounds great...any clues why it doesn't work with the HDMI cables?
