I want those most of all, are they only ones that appear to be exclusive to this set which has a number of titles I already own?

Re: TCFHE/MGM Press Release: Hollywood Musicals Collection

This has really chapped me. This is the fifth announcement in the last few weeks concerning a set that has new mixed with old. First it was Universal and the Abbott & Costello collection that includes “It Ain’t Hay”, which is the only one I do not have. They did it again by announcing the Gregory Peck collection that includes “To Kill A Mockingbird” and “Cape Fear” which I have and I really only want “Captain Newman MD.” Fox also announced Murnau/Borzage set which includes Sunrise. This set I would purchase and double dip on that title, if there are more titles in the collection than announced. And let’s not forget Warner’s adding “The Singing Nun” to three other DVD’s in a Christmas collection that was only released last year.

Now we have “Whoopee” and “Kid Millions” (I already have an Image “Goldwyn’s Follies”) in a 50 disc set that I have the other 48 or so. I am not buying this or any of the other sets. I guess I will have to make some sort of stand on this and go without.

Now I feel better after the rant, but still not buying any.

I want this, but it's just too pricey. :S

Re: TCFHE/MGM Press Release: Hollywood Musicals Collection

I wonder who a set like this is for. Most people who are interested in these movies probably have some/all the films which have been previously released.
There is no new/better DVD content on the already released material. These will be the existing disks in a fancy box with postcards. Anyone who doesn't already have these films probably isn't that interested in them, so why would they buy a big box set. Now if this was a big box set of blu-rays.....

Does anyone know if HAIR will be anamorphic? If so, will we finally see a single edition also anamorphic?

Re: TCFHE/MGM Press Release: Hollywood Musicals Collection

It doesn't look like they'll be released as singles so please, please, please stay away from buying this large set and others like it when they refuse to release singles!!! It will only encourage them!!!

Eddie Cantor deserves his own set!!!

Re: TCFHE/MGM Press Release: Hollywood Musicals Collection

At first I was impressed, but then I've been sitting here for 10 minutes trying to imagine who this $500 box set is for. If you love musicals you surely own at least half of these.

Why not an entire Eddie Cantor Box set?

When I sold off most of my laserdisc collection, I sold all my Eddie Cantor musicals (dumb decision, but I needed rent money, being a starving student in NYC).

They sold for almost $100 a piece on ebay. I think "The Kid From Spain" went for even more, since it was never on VHS, and is rarely ever seen.

You'd get nice sales with a Cantor set, especially since there would be 3 excellent Busby Berkeley musicals among them. Seems like a no-brainer.

Re: TCFHE/MGM Press Release: Hollywood Musicals Collection

I must agree. Give Eddie his own set! They could really put all his Goldwyn films on 3 DVDs if they wanted to. I want Whoopee and Kid Millions, but I cannot afford to buy the set to get them.

Re: TCFHE/MGM Press Release: Hollywood Musicals Collection

This is MGM/Fox. MGM is famous for repackaging old non-anamorphic crummy looking transfers in box sets.

So whatever you do, don't preorder this set sight unseen!!! Wait for the reviews.

Re: TCFHE/MGM Press Release: Hollywood Musicals Collection

You folks are so right on the money:
1. Wait for reviews. MGM has a lousy past.
2. Contact them about an Eddie Cantor set.
3. Tell Sony to stop making sets that only rich people will buy and will end up being about 50% off in about nine months!
