CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers) - Page 5

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

I didn't know any of this Nicholas, thanks for the info. I knew Naren Shankar had written on Star Trek TNG too. I looked it up, looks like the show will feature more of Hodges and Wendy and their geeky side in this episode.

That means about halfway through this episode the story will completely go off the rails and lose direction.

I've seen the promos for tonights CSI a few more times and I still think it looks like a Star Trek like show that Hodges and Wendy are at. Not Galactica. But I'll see shortly!

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

And now we know that the show was basically the original Star Trek, which the victim was trying to turn into the new Battlestar Galactica. I'm scoring this one as a tie.

I just loved everything about this episode, Hodges flip-phone and "He's dead, Jim" to Wendy decoding Hodges' declarartion of love in the alien language. (She apparently has an excellent, maybe even eidetic, memory.) On Babylon 5 Ranger Marcus Cole once told Cmdr. Susan Ivanova that she was beautiful in Minbari, a language she didn't speak. But she did have an eidetic memory, and months later she studied Minbari and found out what he had said.

The Hodges fantasy sequences were great.

And, of course, there was the wonder of Wendy, finally out of those lab outfits.

Joe

Ron Moore's cameo was very brief:

In an ironic move considering who he is, he was the bearded guy to first yell "YOU SUCK!" after that redux was shown.

Joe, I am not even that much of a trekkie but I absolutely loved this episode as well for all of the reasons you mentioned and more, the murder was second the Hodges/Wendy story, and damn, Wendy out of her labcoat......

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

That was very sweet how they ending it with Wendy figuring out Hodges' message.

I liked the line about wearing the tin foil bikini.

I agree, it was perfect use of Ron Moore declaring the redux sucked! Did anyone else notice that Grace Park was one of the convention goers as the camera panned around the group watching the redux?

They really nailed a lot of Star Trek's most known episodes. Having Wendy as the Orion Slave girl and as Angelique Pettyjohn's Shahna was pretty well done! It will be interesting to see where this goes between Wendy and Hodges. It was funny how everyone in the lab knew too.

edit: I forgot to add, there was a great line from Archie, where he says: "People don't like it when they mess with their heros." I thought that so apt for the new Star Trek about to come out and the huge split now of some of the fans who aren't happy with JJ Abrams changes as well as the fan outcry when Moore's Battlestar Galactica Redux came out.

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

Not much to add. This was one of the most enjoyable episodes of the series. And Hodges, I admire the dedication to the lab, but don't be an idiot...

There a lot of the jokes and sight gags that only genre fans would understand. I wonder how this ep went over with the average CSI fan. Seeing Kate Vernon was nice too but when I caught a glimpse of Grace Park, my jaw dropped and I actually applauded the TV set.

The only thing that upset me was the fact that the "He's dead Jim" line was spoiled by the show's promos.

While this episode certainly focused on Hodges and Wendy, I thought it had a lot of the usual CSI type of conventions. They showed the extreme side of the world they entered into while investigating the murder, like they did recently with the boxing show and the show where people dressed up like animals. They still did all the proper stuff to investigate the evidence, the body and the crime scene.

The Walter Mitty bits with Hodges was definitely going off into new territory. I was surprised how directly they recreate, but with a different twist, iconic scenes from Trek, including the collar of obedience. Nice to see Hodges and Wendy's knowledge of the show help solve the crime.

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

To continue with the list of favorite things from the episode begun in various replies above:

1. David in the morgue riffing on McCoy's Occupational Disclaimers (tm)

2. The argument about what is and isn't SF.

3. The generation gap between those who remember the old series with
affection and those born long after it was off the air.

4. "You suck!"

5. Assorted "BSG" cast members involved (some uncredited in crowd
shots.)

6. The great job replicating the Playskool uniforms, the Bill Theiss women's costumes, the cheap sets and the laughable fight moves.

7. Hodges' bad wig.

That, of course, is Hodges' excuse, and to some degree his illusion. He likes to think of himself as monk-like and dedicated (in what he thought was the Grissom mode), but the fact is, he's terrified of women in general, and Wendy in particular. (In fairness, I think a lot of us would be intimidated by a woman that good-looking.)

I haven't been watching CSI regularly lately, but when I saw the program listing I set my DVR to record it. It was enjoyable for Trek/SF fans. Does anyone else remember that Liz Vassy appeared as a crewman in an episode of ST:TNG?

And Wallace Langham appeared in an episode of ST: Voyager. ("Once Upon a Time", S5 episode 5. His character was named Flotter T. Water III, which leads me to suspect he was playing someone in the holo-novel that figures in the plot, rather than a crewman or alien. By S5 I had completely given up on Voyager, the novelty of Jeri Ryan in a catsuit having long-since worn off, so I never saw it myself.)

Hmmm. Jeri Ryan in a catsuit. I wonder if Astro Quest every had any spin-offs like AS: Wanderer that featured hot cyborg women? Could be a future costume for Wendy. Or maybe she and Hodges will get together and attend a Star Wars con at some point. Then we could see Liz Vassey in something like this:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

When she joined the show for season 4, that was when I grew to dislike the show and it turned into a huge chore to watch. She didn't ruin the show, it was just coincidence that she showed up as I got sick of it. The whole supposed allure of her being there did piss me off because it was such a pathetic stunt for the show to pull, but I do credit them for making the character interesting.
I didn't (and still don't) care about the idea of "sex appeal" on the shows I watch. The negative side effect of her showing up (for me) is that I now completely hate the Borg as villains, except for in "First Contact". Whenever a Borg episode of Voyager showed up, I hated it every time.

By the way, in case those interested in the upcoming Blu-ray release of season 1 missed it:

FULL disc-by-disc breakdown.

High price, but I'm sure it won't actually be that high when it hits store shelves.

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

Now I'm glad that Blu Ray owners are going to have a chance to own the series in the best available quality, but disappointed that they're the only ones who will be able to own the series in widescreen, or have access to the new extras. (I'd especially like to see the original cut of the pilot, hear the commentaries and see the retrospective documentary.)

The vast majority of potentional buyers for an improved S1 set don't own Blu Ray players, and in this economy many of them probably have no plans to upgrade.

Anyway, I sent the following e-mail to Paramount, and I urge anyone else who would like an SD-DVD version of this new and improved S1 set to let them know how you feel as well:

Quote:
I’m a great fan of the original “CSI” and own all eight season sets on DVD. The 2nd through 8th seasons are especially terrific, with their widescreen aspect ratio, commentary tracks and other extras. But the 1st season is always a bit of a disappointment to revisit. The later seasons look look fantastic up-scaled on an HDTV display, the season 1 set, less so. It really is an anomaly in what is now a substantial collection.

I see you are finally revisiting season one, which some of us have been urging you to do for years, but only on Blu Ray Disc. This is terribly disappointing to the millions of “CSI” fans who don’t own Blu Ray players and who have no plans to buy them anytime soon. (I did buy an HDTV when my old standard def set gave up the ghost, but a Blu Ray player and pricey Blu Ray discs? Those are luxuries I can’t afford right now.)

I would be willing to spring for a new standard def season 1 set, though, if it were widescreen and had the extras that are being included on the Blu Ray version. I am sure I’m not alone in this, and the fact remains that SD-DVD players far outnumber Blu Ray players. Since you’ve already produced the extras and created the HD widescreen masters it would be a trivial matter to down-convert the same content for release on SD-DVD, for the benefit of those of us who love the show but aren’t ready to invest in Blu Ray.

I hope that you will give the idea some serious thought. You’ve certainly had enough success repackaging theatrical films with new transfers, added bonus materials and other bells and whistles, and there is no reason to think that you can’t have similar success with a TV property, provided there is a big enough built in audience and that the improvements in the new version are compelling enough.

Sincerely,

Joseph DeMartino

Regards,

Joe

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

I couldn't afford my PS3 when I got it, but I said to myself 'I have no one to get me so much as a birthday card, so screw it....I'll regret the decision later'.

Truth be told, the chances of my buying that CSI set are extremely slim, because I couldn't begin to afford it or anything else now. Even if they released a DVD counterpart (haven't picked up Bones Season 3 yet because it's still $60) I couldn't afford it.

I wholeheartedly support the email idea and will do the same.
For some reason it seems that a lot of Blu-ray owners turn into elitists who seem to spit on DVD. I assure you I am not one of them.

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

I just got a chance to see this week's episode and thought it was a lot of fun (like most episodes centering on the lab folks). Hodges' goofy fantasies were a good time and I loved Wendy's outfits.

Ron Moore's cameo was hilarious. And I thought that was Grace Park in the crowd but wasn't sure.

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

I came across this article about the CSI episode, A Space Oddity. There are interviews with the writers which talk about the production. It's really a good read if you have a few minutes. Sounds like they had a really good time doing it. Felt like the effort the DS9 crew put into the 30th Anniversary episode for Star Trek recreating the original Star Trek sets. Plus there's a link at the top of the article for a post airing follow-up with additional comments.

Even if you saw the episode, there is one spoiler there that concerns some casting. If you know Battlestar Galactica well, you can spot more then one cast member other then Grace Park in there. I didn't know who that person was, so it didn't matter to me.

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

How odd - They couldn't use any references to "Star Trek" at all because of legal reasons, but this show is owned by Paramount just like Trek. Obviously I'm missing something there.

Once they did reference the shows - Archie (the video tech guy) listed all the Trek series by title when helping Nick answer a question Greg wouldn't have understood.

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

My understanding is that Star Trek is owned by CBS, they have the TV rights. Paramount owns the movie rights. So it makes even less sense.

And to add to what you said about past references to Star Trek, I recall a show where dead bodies had green blood and Wendy and Hodges were talking about how Spock has green blood and why and Wendy showed him up with her Trek and science knowledge.

Thought the season finale was ho-hum, even with the dramatic shoot-out at the end.

Yeah, I'm kinda glad that they didn't have a cliffhanger again this season but it was a slower episode and an odd choice for a finale.

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

It was more in tone with the second, third and forth season finales. None of those were huge, earth-shattering episodes. Season 2 had "The Hunger Artist", the story of a starving supermodel and her homeless, mentally ill sister. It ended with Grissom starting to truly feel the effects of his hearing loss.

Season 3 was a bit bigger, with "Inside The Box" which was a larger than usual (at the time) episode about a bank robbery engineered by Sam Braun and led to the death of a recurring detective (something CSI: NY just did). It was more of a "finale", but bookended Grissom's hearing loss as he prepared for surgery.

Season 4 had "Bloodlines" which was a typical episode as well. A rape case with several suspects - all brothers, that shared identical DNA patterns.

I suppose season 1's "The Strip Strangler" wasn't huge, but was certainly big enough for a first season finale.

So this season's finale was kind of a throwback to simpler times, so to speak.

So for once we have no idea of what's to come with, and I'm amazed even by saying this, season TEN. Wow. Ten seasons of CSI. Just wow.

Bizarre CSI lawsuit filed against writer/producer Sarah Goldfinger:

'CSI' producer facing defamation lawsuit - UPI.com

I'm wondering how common this type of thing is, since writers of television shows often reveal they get names and character's traits from real people in their own lives.

Writers normally get permission to use the names of friends and family (in writing, more often than you might think) and they generally attach the names to neutral or positive characters. (Unless they happen to have a friend who gets a charge out of having his name attached to a serial killer.)

If Goldfinger actually did what is alleged in the suit, it was remarkably dumb and petty. It is also amazing that it got past the studio's legal department, which vets every name in every script to avoid precisely this kind of problem. If a Google/Nexis/Lexis search had turned up a reference to this pair as real estate agents the clearance group should have flagged it immediately, and required either a signed release or that the names be changed.

So I'm puzzled.

Re: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Season 9 (mild early season spoilers)

For the 5th season premiere of "ANGEL", the writer/director of the episode Joss Whedon said in the DVD commentary for it that he named the episode's main guest star after his nephew or cousin (can't recall which) Corbin Fries. The show's main characters went on to say nothing but horrible things about him because he was supposed to be such a nasty piece of work.

Whedon thought the real Fries would get a kick out of it but it turned out to be the opposite. Oops.
