Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray? - Page 2

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

My collection is complete enough that I'm not buying ctalog titles much anymore. Any new titles (Iron man, Dark Knight, Hellboy II, Indiana Jones) will be Blu-Ray day and date and that's what I'll get.

I'm making a list of the movies I will double dip for the BD upgrade but it's not much. And I'll still get SD DVD tv sets if they're not offered on BD.

Only for the last 5 years or so.

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

For newer flicks (blind buys, etc) I'm buying mostly used SD stuff. Old stuff, like all the horror films I bought recently for next month, I don't mind so much picking up SDs new but it does cross my mind. Within a year I'll actually buy a BD player and start on those with some of my most favs, like Kubrick stuff.

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

Depends on the title. I use films (sometimes whole films, many excerpts) in my courses and for those, I'll continue getting SD versions until my school becomes "BD" (if ever). For example, I recently picked up the John Adams HBO series in SD (though I believe it will be BD, also--not sure, though) because I'm far likelier to use it in class at some point.

My setup makes SD look pretty good, so I have no qualms about continuing with SD purchases in some circumstances. Boxed sets of films that have taken a long time to get to SD DVD, catalogue titles that are inexpensive, TV box sets that are inexpensive and/or shot on video (and not very likely to have an HD release) and kid DVDs (I don't think I need The Wiggles in 1080p--my 3 year old son doesn't care ) comprise the list of likely SD purchases. If and when such titles come out on BD AND I feel the need to "upgrade"--the SD sets will make gifts for the family and friends I KNOW will never go "blu".

I have to say, that this type of sale will almost "force" me to buy some SD DVDs (I just ordered 4 sets)..

DVD - Warner Buy 1 Get 1 Free

Great selection of Warner box sets (some of these films might arrive in Blu-ray at some point, but I doubt that all of them).

Yeah, I was checking out that sale myself. I'd love to get From Beyond the Grave, the Amicus anthology. But wasn't sure what to pair it up with. Is the Scooby Doo live action movie any good? I've been craving the cartoon...

It's a good sale but I cannot buy SD-DVD anymore, no matter how inexpensive.

I'll bet you're the kind who can leave that little bit of Fiddle-Faddle in the bottom of the box. :p

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

Not only do I find myself skipping SD titles, but I find myself skipping the SD section of this forum more and more. I'm looking for BD news.

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

In addition to waiting on BDs even if they're not day-n-date with their DVD counterparts, I definitely hold off on double dips.

Perfect case in point, I've been waiting for a new DVD of The Big Lebowski and one is now coming out. But now that I'm BD capable, I'm not buying it. Pre-BD, I'd already have it on pre-order.

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

I waited when There will be blood came out on SD. I couldn't fathom paying over $20.00 for SD on a new title that will sooner or later be available on HD. I did the same with Cloverfield. I'm doing the same with The Darjeeling Limited even when it was on sale for $10.00. I tend to think of Blu-Ray discs to mbe the Laserdiscs of the 21st century. They cost a helluva lot more than the Standard but they are so much more worth it!

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

Well, today I snagged Mad Men Season One on BD for 4$ less than the SD set in an HMV in downtown Montreal. Plus I picked up Reservoir Dogs and Stargate for 15$ each on BD. So prices are not bad on every title (I did pass up 35$ discs that I've seen on Amazon for under 25$--and admittedly there were a lot more of those than there were of the 15$ variety, but the odd bargain is out there in "B&M" stores).

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

I've also stopped buying SD titles in most cases outside of an occasional bargain bin title or something either not expected to come out on BD for a very long time (if ever) or is very unlikely to take good advantage of the quality difference.

Just the other day, I picked up Be Kind, Rewind on BD (for $15) and The Queen on SD (for $5) from the local $15 DVD Guys right around the corner from J&R over here. For me, I think SD is still watchable enough for a film like The Queen (and it's a title I'd probably lend to friends and family who won't be going BD all that soon) -- and I did rent it on BD already, so I know roughly what I'll be missing in this case.

The Addams Family movies

I'm waiting (hopefully) for both Addams Family movies; the current dvds look too dark and murky. Plus, they have like 0 extras. Also, director Barry Sonnenfeld had a LOT of deleted scenes in these two flicks--they've never been made available to the public. I'd LOVE to see them! BD is the place for them. Hopefully they'll made a decent little twin-disc set one of these fine days...

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

Sonnenfeld also wanted to record audio commentaries for them, but the studio didn't use his offer. So actually, we need some decent (long overdue) special editions of them .

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

I cut way back on buying DVD's, just prior to the launch of HD DVD. Then I went Purple. Now I'm all Blu.

From that time to this, DVD's have been purchased very sparingly, most often for documentaries that will be a long time off for BD, and specialty stuff like the Three Stooges collections that Sony is releasing.

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

Generally yes, for new drama titles.

I'm only buying DVDs of pre-1950 (kinda arbitrary date...) stuff, TV stuff, and bargain bin titles. Also will consider comedy titles on DVD if cheap enough, otherwise will go the few bucks extra for BD; similarly, there are VERY few comedy titles I'll re-buy on BD.

Anyone else been procrastinating over SD purchases of late?

I have for the most part stopped buying SD-DVD's and buy the majority of my movie titles on HD Bluray. Depending on the title I might pick up an ocational SD-DVD but most of my purchases are HD. And there are many titles I will not buy on SD-DVD and I would gladly wait until the Bluray version is released.

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

I have not purchased a full price DVD since I was on the fence and almost bought a HD-DVD player a couple months before they folded.

I am waiting for Blu, probably until Christmas. I will occasionally get a title from the 5 buck bin, or pre-viewed from blockbuster though.

Re: Do you find yourself skipping SD titles and 'waiting' for Blu-Ray?

Call me weird, but I'm still buying DVDs as well as Blus. The pick-up of titles on Blu seems quite slow, but new titles I'm interested in are preordered as Blus. I'm still buying much of my back catalogue titles on standard DVD (unless titles are something special).
