American Idol - Season 8 - Page 34

Re: American Idol - Season 8

They didn't so much waste the save as they might have just sabatoged their own competition. With two people going home next week and motivated fan bases for matt, lil and anoop (b3 tends to be a kick in the butt for fans even for contestants who have been there before), I think allison is in extreme danger.

Why put her in jeapardy by rescuing a lost cause? I mean, adam is most likely going to win. His future doesn't need a win at this point but he deserves it (having the only performance to look forward to each week). However, allison deserves to be top 2 or 3 and I'm baffled as to why the judges possibly threw her under the bus to save Matt.

Anoop has been B3 three weeks in a row now, and he's had good performances. This is Lil's second B3 appearance. I don't see a rallying effect for either -- it looks more like a downward trajectory, and unless they give the pimp spot to Anoop, he and Lil are as good as gone.

I wouldn't worry about Allison since a) she was in the dreaded one spot and escaped B3, b) it was not even her best performance and she escaped B3, and c) since they are at top 7 again, there is no stranded fanbase looking for a new home that would upset the vote distribution.

Well, unless she tanks. I mean, then all bets are off.

Speaking of stranded fanbases, it was quite a canny thing on Danny's part to invoke his dead wife again, as Scott's pity voter fanbase was just looking for a sob story to dial in for.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Still think this decision put allison into a very vulnerable situation.

Another negative with using the save this week is the impact in the viewer. Once again we're going to have 7 performances in one hour with, possibly, comments from only two judges. Once again, it'll probably run overtime anyways. Blah.

For some reason I can only really see Anoop and Adam digging disco week.

I thought the same thing. Waste it on Matt, come on, the guy clearly does not have the talent to remain. The top 3 is easy to pick out: Adam, Allison and Danny. Like you say, they risk Allison and Danny not being in the top 5 at least if something happens.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I'd venture to guess that they've looked at the numbers, know that Allison and Danny are at no risk of being bottom (or bottom 2 next week), and 'used' the save for dramatic effect only, and to give the perception that they (and their opinions) actually matter. And also to remove the option of saving Lil.

I'm just sorry for Anoop. When he chooses (OK, is given...) the right song, he's a fine singer, better IMHO than Allison or Danny tone-wise and stays in pitch, but he's just not attracting a fan-base. There aren't many Indian-Americans, I guess.

It's nowhere near that simple.

I find myself thinking, "I wonder what Adam will do for Disco week?" The fact that I even think that means he's done his job. And here folks thought the competition would be without personality this season with the loss of Norman Gentle. Maybe Adam can do MacArthur Park and irritate people more with his screeching on the high notes. Whatever he does, I'm betting I'll like it.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Besides the sour taste it left in a lot of fan's mouths, this "save" didn't really accomplish anything more than most past seasons. All that happened is that we have a week with no ejection, followed by a double elimination week. So the net result is a big ZERO in my opinion. Perhaps the producers came up with this new gimmick (along with the 'Top 13') to ensure that they would still have the same number of program weeks for season eight despite there not being an "Idol Gives Back" event.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

So in effect, even though there is no Idol Gives Back (which included a double elimination), they used the save to set up a double elimination anyway.

Crafty. This is one of the producer manipulations I actually didn't see coming.

Correction: There was a double elimination in season 6, but season 7 had Michael Johns voted off during Idol Gives Back.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

It was pretty silly to save Matt. He and Lil are gone next week. Now that the save is done with maybe Allison will get sent home early. One could can only hope.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

You want Allison sent home early (next week?) or you want Matt and Lil gone next week?

I finally got around to watching the results show. Jennifer Hudson's performance wasn't really doing anything for me until the end, which I enjoyed. Up until then, it was forgettable for me. I didn't see the season she was on AI. I haven't watched Dreamgirls yet (I know, what am I waiting on), but I have seen the clip of her performing on YouTube. There's something strangely vacant in her eyes when she performs to me.

Is there anyone over 21 who enjoyed Miley Cyrus's performance? Her voice sounded very thin to me, and I couldn't help but compare her to Allison, who is about the same age.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Why do they even bother with non-Idol alum/mentors performing on results night?

If I had my choice I'd get rid of both chicks. One is overrated the other way past due.

IMO, Allison has had just one mediocre performance (last week's "Armageddon" theme) out of the past four weeks. OTOH, LIl has had *nothing but* mediocre performances for the past four weeks.

This being "Disco Week", Allison should do just fine. (I'm sure she can find a song that she can apply her natural "Rocker" ability to.) Lil could be in *real trouble* ...

Of course, at this point Adam is so far ahead of the other contestants that he's making a complete joke of the competition; so it's ultimately not going to matter much as to when the last two girls go.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

It matters when people go. Say I watch the show because I only like Allison. If she leaves this week, maybe I continue watching, maybe not. But even more importantly, if I'm Allison, this is the most exposure I will likely ever have. It's my opportunity to pick up fans and followers. Every week I can sing in front of millions of eyeballs, that's another opportunity for me to win people over to my career following AI. So even if she loses, coming in 3rd place is better than leaving this upcoming week.

That's also the reason Matt's save, which is pointed out as pointless for many reasons, isn't pointless for Matt.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Disco week!!!!????

This is, indeed, great news everybody!!!!!!!

Imagine, for the group sing-along Wedensday, in lieu of Disco Night, why not have the Top 7 dress up as each member of The Village People???

We could have:

Adam and Allison as the biker dude and chick, respectively, each dressed provacatively in leather!!!!!!!!!

Lil' as the cop a la Cheryl "Salt" Wray in Ain't Nothin' But A She Thing!!!!!!!

SaveMatt as the cowboy!!!!!!!

Danny Boy as the military dude in fatigues!!!!!!

Kris as the construction worker!!!!!!

And Anoop as the Indian!!!!!!! (Felipe Rose is my favorite one in the bunch!!!!)

And may they all sing "Macho Man" while doing lap dances all around the judges table!!!!!!

I could see Bloody Ol' Simon with that sardonic smile on his face with Lil singing that particular song!!!!!

Randy would be game more than likely.

And as for Kara and Paula...who knows!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????
IMHO, with them, anything goes!!!!!!!!

And as for Ryan..how about coming out like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever with the iconic white suit, black shirt and shoes??????

If the great big disco ball is not shinning brightly and spinning on stage as it is supposed to...that is a mistake!!!!!! Especially on Disco Night!!!!!!!!

I miss the 30-minute elimination shows (even though I can fast-forward through the hour-long version in about 15 minutes including guest pimp performances on the DVR).

I completely agree!

Why not a 90 minute perfomance show (with ALL the judges commenting on each performance) and a 30 minute results show?

Jennifer Hudson is one of the most overrated performers of recent years. Dreamgirls was a good movie, but the Oscar was kind of a joke -- she was neither the best singer nor the best actress in that film, let alone in any film of the year.

I am starting to hear a bit of a vocal resemblance to Dolly Parton in Miley Cyrus. I wonder what she'll sound like in 3 or 4 years.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Well, I'd say Lil, Matt, and Anoop were the worst of the night...it's getting to be a habit.

Still, Anoop wasn't AWFUL and he holds the pimp spot, so it will be hard to kick him.

Probably Matt and Lil this week and Anoop next week.

I think you're probably right Quentin, but I think there is a chance we'll see Alison in the bottom three instead of either Matt or Anoop.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Allison had been in the bottom three before so that wouldn't suprise me.
I thought Adam did pretty good, not the best performance but at least he didn't come out screaming like I thought he would, and you know I am a big fan so that is saying something coming from me.
Gokey did nothing for me, he is overrated and peaked early.
Kris was the stand-out tonight for me, easily the most original of the night.

I wouldn't have thought this a few weeks ago, but I think you're right.

I wouldn't mind if they took all three of them and made it a triple elimination...Alison is about as one dimensional as could be at this point.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I actually quite liked Allison's performance tonight! I don't think it's any secret that "Disco" is not going to be her forte'. But that was a different take on "Hot Stuff" and she sang the heck out it.

So put me in the camp that thinks the bottom three this week will consist of Lil, Matt, and Anoop; with Lil and Matt going home.

I really don't know what to think of Lil. Every week I expect her to finally meet expectations, and every week she falls a little short. I've never seen a contestant on this show have so much apparent potential; but then deliver such consistently mediocre performances week after week. Perhaps her voice really is just about gone as Paula indicated in her critique. In any event, whatever the problem was (voice, advisor, or both) it was a real shame.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Lil needs to pack her bags.

Kris continues to coffeehouse-up his performance. Yawn.

Danny is going to be a good variety show performer. He tries too hard to evoke star quality, but he just ain't got it.

Allison had a poor song for her vocal range, the rasp just doesn't go with it.

Adam would have done better without that trademark scream of his towards the end of the song, should have pulled it back a little more.

Matt had the worst hamfisted song choice, and truly tries to channel JT, to his detriment.

Anoop tried to R&B his song choice, but the tempo just didn't work for his song.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I guess I don't understand the point of having theme weeks if they're not going to actually perform within that theme? I thought the point was to have the contestants show that they're not just one-dimensional and can perform in a variety of styles. But all they do is take whatever the theme is and strip away everything unique about it and force it into the same old, same old conventional ballads. At that point there's really no reason to have theme weeks. They may as well just let the singers pick their sappy songs every week from the entire available catalog.

Didn't really care for any of the performances tonight though I thought Anoop was better than the judges thought. As usual Allison sounded as if she's been smoking for 40 years. Any truck stop waitress could do as well. Kris just did more of the same old street corner folky guitar music.

And a little sympathy for Donna Summer. Three of her classics were tortured tonight.
