I believe so. IIRC, a contestant is precluded from trying again only if he/she passes Hollywood week and makes the 'final' 24 (now 36?) that appear on elimination shows ahead of the final 12. And IIRC his sister didn't survive Hollywood week?

But given the flak she's seen her brother endure, would she even want to?

Did she even make it to Hollywood?

Re: American Idol - Season 8

They both made it to Hollywood, but only Sanjaya made the the last cuts. They showcased a tear-filled embrace after she got cut in the prelims.

Last two separated at births from last week:

Yes. I remember seeing them both in Hollywood. And, Sanjaya was there, too.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Precisely. When Sanjaya went on and his big sister did not, it led to a rather emotional moment between brother and sister crying together over her non-selection to go on to the final 24.

Oh, and BTW, Sanjaya has not only a new CD out...but he has also written a book about his time on American Idol as well, which was just released today. He gave a rather candid interview on The Howard Stern Show this morning which gave me some further insight to the type of young man he is and how he took to all that went on surrounding his time on Idol, not to mention some of what others said about him and his talent.

I think I shall buy this book to add to my library. Ought to be an interesting read.

Oh, and BTW, Howard also played a cut from his CD. The song sounded very nice to me, a smooth blend of Bollywood mixed with a latter-day soul beat and a hint of classic Michael Jackson.

You lost us at "hot action to the max".

Yes. That entire sentence still haunts me.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Sanjaya?!? Are you serious? Not only would I not buy his cd, but I can't imagine his book being of any interest to anyone. What could he possibly have to say?

I did see him on an interview with some cable access channel and it was hilarious to say the least. He kept going on and on about his fans and how he has such a HUGE following. He also mentioned that he was doing a gig at some nightclub and people kept throwing red ribbons on stage, because it was an inside thing with him and his fans and they "got" him. So Tina H V, what exactly is this red ribbon thing?

OK, the CD is a five track EP available exclusively through Amazon.com (both as a CD or download) so I don't think it will be a blockbuster...but the music itself bites the big one. It sounds like five different versions of the same song, and not a very good song at that.

Yeah I heard some of it and it was quite boring.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Kind of a lackluster episode last night, I thought. Only 12 got through and none of the ones they showed really impressed me all that much.

I'm guessing they're not showing much talent in these first episodes this year since they plan on spending more time on Hollywood. That's where we'll probably get our first glimpse of many of the really good contestants.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I think Adam Lambert was the only contestant worth a damn in last night's show. The rest was filled with bickering between Simon and Kari.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Too many contestants were put through for reasons other than vocal talent. Like that guy Jesus -- he didn't have the chops for karaoke much less Hollywood. And they spent too much time with that mentally ill woman with the George clinton hairdo -- yes, her malapropisms were funny, but halfway through the segment you started to see how desperate and crazy she was, and it started becoming cruel (although her remark about singing through her rectum did make my wife and I convulse with laughter).

Also the second time that someone's sob story was that a loved one was wholly dependant on them, yet you're supposed to root for him to go to Hollywood? Kai also had that delusion that being on American Idol would translate into buying houses and gifts for their loved ones. He might have a better shot at that by taking his life savings and heading to Vegas.

Oh, at it looks like from the previews that Becky O'Donoghue's sister Jessie is headed for Hollywood. Jessie couldn't audition in season 5 due to throat surgery. She and Becky posed provocatively for Maxim prior to getting on Idol and caused what was a mini-sensation (mind you, this was pre-Antonella Barba).

I'm with you, Tina -- Antonella Barba, Haley Scarnato (she of the incredibly shrinking wardrobe) and most of all Sanjaya were missing from season 7, and the result was sheer boredom. With an ex-porno guy taking the casting reins this year, maybe we will get the entertaining freakfest season 6 turned out to be (but without the disappointing Blake/Jordan showdown).

You're absolutely right, I started off laughing and wondering how people could be that dumb. But then it just got sad because you knew she was straight up crazy.
The rectum comment had me rolling though, and the fact that she even corrected Ryan about how to say Trachea.

Maybe that stripper guy showed up a couple seasons too soon.

How about that girl from Puerto Rico at the beginning of the show? I'm pretty sure laughs like that have launched more than one homicidal rampage...

I can't believe I forgot about her. I wanted to shoot myself. Wow, I am always amazed that there are people like that out there. Just no clue either.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Last night was a bit better than the night before, as they focused more on the Hollywood contestants than the untalented losers. I liked the girl at the end although she was too shiny and appears to be attracted to thugs.

I don't know what to think of Joanna Paccitti. On the positive side, she has a good voice, she's attractive (I thought that she was Jessie O'Donoghue from the preivews), and she doesn't try to oversing like Carly.

But the problem is that this is her second (or third) go round, and it feels like she's violating the spirit of the competition. Now, I know AI is not exactly Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts (and who knows if AGTS was ever AGTS), but there is a component of AI breaking a struggling or unknown musician that is lost when you're taking a Joanna (or a Carly) who's already had their big break and couldn't make anything of it. I mean, what's the difference between putting Joanna on the show and, say, Taylor Hicks after he was dropped by his label? Then again, she doesn't try to shatter all the glass in the room when she sings and she was more up front about her level of industry participation than Carly was, but at this point she is Carly Smithson 2.0.

I realize that Kurt Warner wasn't that great a match, but I shy away from things that are too obvious like Robert Downey Jr. I was more in an NFL playoffs mind when I came up with that one. The Andy Reid one turned out much better (mostly because that contestant was a freakazoid).

Here are some new ones from this week's shows:

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I know a lot of people who suck...go there for the 15 minutes of fame. But, it truly is scary seeing people who really cannot sing..get offended when they are told they stink.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Well, you must keep in mind that they may have deluded relatives and friends telling them that they are good, and then the producers at the cattle call audition told them to come back and perhaps even told them that they were good to entice them to come back (and to make the negative critque even more crushing). So it's not really all that surprising that they come out with hurt feelings.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I love my kids enough to tell them they are not good singers if it meant they wouldn't be humiliated on national television.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Yes, I agree, but the producers have a big hand in getting these people to humiliate themselves on national TV. My issue with this is that some of these contestants appear to be mentally ill or having learning disabilities in varying degrees. Akilah from San Fran (wrong rectum lady) appeared to be clincally bat-shit insane and the bleach blonde Billy Bob Thornton look-a-like probably rode the short bus.
