American Idol - Season 8 - Page 5

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Hopefully there will be no more tragedies.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I've discovered something really strange. Sometimes, when the judges are giving their critiques, the text of the closed captions is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from what's being said. It's like they went back and overdubbed or re-shot the judges but transcribed the captions from the original session.

Try turning them on -- it's kinda neat in that you get two sets of critiques in the time of only one.

NO comments? Nothin'???

I guess that was a pretty nondescript episode.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I like to record these shows and fast forward through all the junk and boy, last night it didn't take me long to watch an hour's worth of AI in about 5 minutes. I'm ready for them to get to Hollywood and cut to the chase.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I loved the girl they sent out and had come back although I thought she sang perfectly fine, was prettier without the make-up, and had a fun, bubbly (no pun intended considering what she sang) personality the first time. She's probably my favorite so far.

The girl who brought the dog I found painful to listen to. She had a decent voice buried inside there so I wasn't surprised she moved through, but alternating between incredibly raspy to clearly every other word didn't work for me.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Yeah, I loved that girl. I prefered her the first time, too, with the jean jacket and natural, but she still looked smashing when she came back. I hope she goes far.

Another one that stood out last night was the girl who did Superstar. Unfortunately, it was for the wrong reasons for me. They loved her, I hated her vocal style. I admit I'm out of touch with the current style, but don't promise me Karen Carpenter and come out with that breathy Britney crap.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

See, this is what I was talking about earlier.... they put the same kind of voices through each year. They pick people for lame reasons and then we gets stuck with nothing but the same churned out crap.

I am still not sure why they chose certain people during these auditions. I really wish they would pick new sounds.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Wow...three nights of AI this week and almost no comments. It is a dark day indeed!

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Well, the decent voices have been few and far between this season. It's like they are going out of their way to keep the "talent" underwraps until Hollywood week.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

WORST. AUDITIONS. EVAR.

The only contestant to make any impression was Anoop. Many of the "four yesses" contestants were barely passable and some made you go, "WTF?"

Also, after the first week, Idol went down to one hour. When you spend 6 minutes on a single contestant in one hour, they better be majorly interesting or it feels like you've wasted a substantial amount of time. It has been exclusively the latter this year.

And too many people were let through to Hollywood just because they had a cute dog or sob story or cute sibling or cute child with them. Kara has been egregious with giving a yes to vocally challenged contestants. I mean, Paula is doing a better job with that than Kara. I mean, WTF? Paula!

Perhaps the waters are fished out. Or maybe Nigel Lythgoe was the straw that stirred this drink. Whatever it is, these auditions were forgettably boring. My only hope is that they saved the best for Hollywood week. I am not banking on it.

New Separated at Births are up (actually, they've been up since Wed, but I just haven't been able to muster the enthusiasm to post lately). Here are two of them, the rest are at American Idol Separated at Birth Season 8 :

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I normally don't like wasting time on the bad auditions, but I did like showing the one girl that was completely confident in her singing ability -- so much so that she quit her job. That's something that I'll bet many people have done, and I considered it almost a PSA to show that while everyone admires confidence, unwarranted overconfidence can just be deadly.

I'm glad the audition shows aren't 2 hours anymore. The only thing I would do to improve the show would be show fewer of the bad auditions. I mean, it's OK to show something like Bikini Girl for interesting TV. I get that. I won't debate ratings as I'm not an expert at it. I'll just say that it continues to mystify me why you have a show that purports to showcase some of America's best unsigned vocal talent and then kick off the show showing us some of America's worst singers. Because, let's face it... there are thousands of singers all across America in bars, churches, and even high school choirs that can sing better than the bad singers they showcase. They shouldn't even waste the judges' time.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I'm with Hanson. I'm just not confident there is enough talent here to field a strong and/or entertaining top 12. This is one thin pool this year.

The girl they told to leave and come back might be on my list already.
Nice sounding voice and very pretty.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

She's my favorite--there have only been four or five I truly like/remember.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. I understand making good TV, but seriously, the contestant should be the only one allowed in with the judges--no pets, no family, no friends. And even though he was semi-amusing, why do we need to waste time sending people like that "Amazing Grace" guy who made fun of Simon to Hollywood? He doesn't have a chance at making top 36, it's a waste of everyone's time.

And Kara adds absolutely nothing to the show besides parroting the judge who spoke before her.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I agree, they have seemed to let a lot of people through to Hollywood that have no business being there.

As for the lack of talent this year, I think we need to be patient. Right or wrong, we have heard but a fraction of the contestants that have been passed on to Hollywood. There are 138 contestants at Hollywood, we've probably only heard maybe 30-50 of them.

I was under the impression this year that they were going to focus more on Hollywood this year, so maybe they are holding back on us. We'll see.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Wow. Half-way through tonight's Hollywood episode and the show sucks worse than a 3 dollar whore. Would it kill them to actually give us a chance to hear these people before they're sent home? They've gone through the first 75 contestants or so and we probably only heard 10 of them.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I am very annoyed at the way tonights show is being presented.
they are showing way too much of anything but singing.

even if they get kicked off i want to hear the performance.
someone should set a timer on it to see actual singing against other stuff.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Second half as bad as the first. I counted 9 contestants we actually got to hear sing during the final half of the show. Many of which were just a few seconds in length.

Awful show tonight.*

*Except for Bikini Girl.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Don't forget. Louder = Better to the American Idol Judges.

The very first person we heard sing was a prime example. It was so shrill and overly loud and yet the judges loved it.

I don't know why I expect this year to any different.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Lil Rounds was shriektastic. I was shocked when she got positive feedback and a standing O from Paula. It wasn't really any less self-indulgent than Von's paint peeling shriek-a-thon.

Too much nasally bikini girl and not enough bubble tea maker.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

Ewwwww...

Not only did they show us very little singing...but, the choices didn't have a ton to do with what we did see. I think this first couple of cuts is all based upon what they see leading up to the actual audition. I'm not even convinced the audition matters.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

After that first guy who got really upset (and was there someone at the end?), they only showed performances by the singers who made it through. Talk about no suspense! BOOOOOORING!

As the kids say: EPIC FAIL.

I agreed with ALL the judges about Bikini Girl -- she started off great but tapered off; also, she did better overall this time than in her original audition.

Incidentally, there were lots of minor discrepancies between the audio and the captions last night -- mostly a few words in judges' comments appearing in the captions that were cut out of the audio track.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I don't remember the bubble tea girl anymore, but I'm glad my jean jacket babe made it to the next round (though they barely showed her).

Ugh. Less drama more singing, please.

Re: American Idol - Season 8

I'm soooo glad that nasty ass blood-red haired girl was sent packing.

To listen to her even speak was like having two pieces of sand paper rubbing together inside my ear canals.

I have to assume that group day is designed to be one long torture test for these people, the show knows that they will stay up all night practicing with people they don't like, argue, get little to no sleep and then have to perform exhausted and utterly drained.

I'm not sure what the show wants to accomplish with all that and i'm fairly certain that some got cut unfairly because of it.

But i'm glad the other two in 'Mercy' made it through and the judges didn't allow blood-red's attitude and rotten singing ruin it for the other two.
